Maybe he had mechanical problems. I've seen the Thunderbirds have similar problems and only do a 5 man show.
Also, the show would be mostly the same if they had the E/F models. The basic show has been the same since 1946, i.e. The the graceful formation aerobatics and the hard core solo stuff. The only thing that has changed has been personnel, equipment, and only slight modifications to the show.

Hard to believe these guys still fly the aging alpha model of the f/a 18. I can't imagine what their demonstration would be like in super hornets!

I am not quite sure why they did that. Possibly for the home town crowd. That's the first tie I've seen that done. I'm not quite sure. But it was an overall good flying weekend to finish the season.
