I was a US Marine Forward Observer and directed these guns in Quantri province, which Khe Sanh and Camp Carroll were located. It was called Artillery Hill and then Camp JJ Carroll after marine captain that was killed on what we later called Mutter's Ridge north of The Rockpile. I was in the tall grass watching the night Capt Carroll died on Hill 400, working out of the Rockpile. Later 3-16-67 we, 39 marines, took Hill 861 on away from the NVA and I believe I was directing these guns once again.

@SilentVoices14 Sorry for your loss. He was dropping ARVN's off when he was left behind. I am pretty sure he was KIA as they saw a body from the air three days later in the grass. That area is full of large jungle cats and others wild animals. I saw and measured a lizard 6'1" down the road at Khe Gia bridge Hwy 9. I was also almost left behind in that area. Ran and grabbed on as it was leaving. Those pilots panic and just hit the gas. But can we blame them with all the stuff being fired at us.
@SilentVoices14 Francis Benoit was wounded while loading into a chopper in that area and the pilot panicked and hit the gas due to mortar rounds. It rose and Francis fell out and onto the ground, Dead. That area is jungle and mountains and so remote. I know another guy that was at Lang Vei up the road and he was captured 3 times and escaped 2 times and the 3rd he ended up in Hanoi. But I believe Jerry's fate was he was left and then killed and not buried by the NVA.

VC were nothing but the guys up around Khe Sanh were super Hard Core, Giaps finest soldiers. They could shoot and they were tough. Khe Sahn was just a way of getting americans attention off of TET.Even though U.S.A intellegence had shitloads of paperwork about the TET offensive.When American intellegence got paperwork off a v.c/n.v.a it would take months going up the chain of command thats where we fucked up.Still goes on today troops get shot at and it goes up the chain of command if they are allowed to fire back by that time they have been getting shot at for a 1/2 hour and are still waiting for a response.

@Guevaristas The reason is they have the money. My friends sister owns a store in Vietnam and pays money to the local officials and she is then "allowed" to keep the business open. It's a lot of money. The tone is changing though and industry is growing and there are many entrepreneurs now. People are enjoying prosperity. It's nice to see people excited about the future there, and it's because of an improved economy. It has a way to go, but it's getting better.
@Guevaristas The bottom line: No one wins in war. My Vietnamese friends parents as well as Americans I met that fought there will tell you this. As far as capitalism, no system is perfect, but it's better than Communism, ask most Vietnamese that left Vietnam to go to Capitalist (and Democratic) countries. You don't see many people escaping TO Vietnam or other communist countries (Many leave them). Even recent years, the govt. officials in Vietnam have the best houses.

I was a US Marine Forward Observer and directed these guns in Quantri province, which Khe Sanh and Camp Carroll were located. It was called Artillery Hill and then Camp JJ Carroll after marine captain that was killed on what we later called Mutter's Ridge north of The Rockpile. I was in the tall grass watching the night Capt Carroll died on Hill 400, working out of the Rockpile. Later 3-16-67 we, 39 marines, took Hill 861 on away from the NVA and I believe I was directing these guns once again.

@SilentVoices14 Sorry for your loss. He was dropping ARVN's off when he was left behind. I am pretty sure he was KIA as they saw a body from the air three days later in the grass. That area is full of large jungle cats and others wild animals. I saw and measured a lizard 6'1" down the road at Khe Gia bridge Hwy 9. I was also almost left behind in that area. Ran and grabbed on as it was leaving. Those pilots panic and just hit the gas. But can we blame them with all the stuff being fired at us.

@SilentVoices14 Francis Benoit was wounded while loading into a chopper in that area and the pilot panicked and hit the gas due to mortar rounds. It rose and Francis fell out and onto the ground, Dead. That area is jungle and mountains and so remote. I know another guy that was at Lang Vei up the road and he was captured 3 times and escaped 2 times and the 3rd he ended up in Hanoi. But I believe Jerry's fate was he was left and then killed and not buried by the NVA.

@SilentVoices14 BTW, Viet Cong are guerillas in black pajamas. He fought main force NVA (North Vietnamese Army) up there. VC were nothing but the guys up around Khe Sanh were super Hard Core, Giaps finest soldiers. They could shoot and they were tough. I fought super of DaNang to the DMZ, Dong Ha to Khe Sanh so I know the difference. Again real sorry about your uncle. War Sucks so very very much.

Khe Sahn was just a way of getting americans attention off of TET.Even though U.S.A intellegence had shitloads of paperwork about the TET offensive.When American intellegence got paperwork off a v.c/n.v.a it would take months going up the chain of command thats where we fucked up.Still goes on today troops get shot at and it goes up the chain of command if they are allowed to fire back by that time they have been getting shot at for a 1/2 hour and are still waiting for a response.

@Guevaristas The reason is they have the money. My friends sister owns a store in Vietnam and pays money to the local officials and she is then "allowed" to keep the business open. It's a lot of money. The tone is changing though and industry is growing and there are many entrepreneurs now. People are enjoying prosperity. It's nice to see people excited about the future there, and it's because of an improved economy. It has a way to go, but it's getting better.

@Guevaristas The bottom line: No one wins in war. My Vietnamese friends parents as well as Americans I met that fought there will tell you this. As far as capitalism, no system is perfect, but it's better than Communism, ask most Vietnamese that left Vietnam to go to Capitalist (and Democratic) countries. You don't see many people escaping TO Vietnam or other communist countries (Many leave them). Even recent years, the govt. officials in Vietnam have the best houses.

Vietnam was a pawn in the global war on communism and was successful in halting communist spread through Asia. Obvious Ho Chi Min knew he could not win outright militarily, this is documented. Enough casualties were inflicted though at a time Americans had race and gender revolution on the homeland and were not willing to support the war and why they pulled out.

There are several reasons: 1) they swab the breach with a soaked cotton cloth after each round 2) they use bags of powder according to the trajectory/range of the round (i.e. powder charge)
