  • Hey Devpdko

Woa, a promo, guess you got a goodie there. Yes, the beat can be a cha-lypso dance back in the day. Remember, a cross between the cha-cha and calyspo.

    Pittsburgh had good taste, too.

  • This was played in Pittsburgh alot. My promo copy of this says "Donald Jenkins & Daylighters" a great song - cha cha.

  • Thanks, I spent time in Chicago in 63, I never heard this played in Pittsburgh PA where I'm from, Love it.

  • great song..thanks

  • GREAT RECORD.....

  • Jo JO white went to Vashon high school when I was there, he played for the Boston Celtics, Donnie Hathaway went to Vashon and he sung with Roberta Flack. and Ronnie...hu.......that's me

  • Vashon High school 1963 Donnie Hawaway, Jo JO white, Ronnie K Robinson, greay song

  • Hi Ronn What is the connection of Vashon high? Who are the people listed here? Donnie Hawaway, Jo Jo and Ronnie? Did Donald Jenkins go to Vahson High? Is he really Hawaway? Tell us more....

    Thanks,

    Ally

  • Hi kary, thanks for adding my missed lyrics. This record is an all time classic is right. So much going on in one song. Clang, animal sounds, haunting lyrics, and your mom played this song. Thank you for listening and sharing your story.

  • wow! Im 27, my mom use to play this song and it was one of my favorites. lol! he said when your stomach speaks, you forget your mind. and when your mind speaks, you forget your heart, and and when your heart speaks you forget everything. lol! classic. lol! ooohh the niiiighhht!!!!

  • Every kid should grow up in a house hip enough to play the incredible Donny & the Delighters' Elephant Walk. "When your stomach speaks, you forget your mind" - great! Thanks for posting.

  • Ivy "But when your mind speaks, you forget everything, ohhh the night was beautiful and serene......"Don't u luv it?"

the native girl crept right into his dream. Wow!!

  • I love this record. Did Donald Jenkins sing with the "Chicago" Aladdins on Witch Records-Please Love Me, Our Love Will Be, Munch, Simple Simon?

  • Ally,

I heard this back in 1963 playing on KDIA (The Boss of the Bay) on my Emerson eight transistor. In fact I was at the corner of 7th and King in San Francisco near the SP Depot. Thanks for the memories and for posting this.

  • HI gf Thank you for sharing your memorie of this what I call a mini symphony record. One of my good co-artist in music talks about KDIA on "from the bottom of my heart" check out the Clovers, if you haven't yet.

  • Thank you markyeee. This was my first attempt at making a video record, and accidently got the family in there.

  • real nice record...I have it on tape but not on record..cool family video too...thanks for posting this..

  • Wicked Classic.

  • What a great tribute. Thank you so much for your comment. Wonder if Donald knows what an incredible piece of production this mini concert of a record is? Thanks Steven,

    Ally

  • I think I meant to say I sang with Donald! The Regal Theater was were the top RB acts played. thanks

  • Thanks, I met and sang Donald in 1967. We sang on Chicago's Regal Theater.

  • And I thought I was the only one who ever bought this record, LOL! Love it! Wish I could get it again.

  • As mentioned above, raafbb, my adult daughter bought this fantastic record for me from a dealer who bought it new in 1963. I would ask dealers if they had this record. This one said he did have the record at home, but he really didn't want to part with i. But finally after each time seeing him, I would ask him if he was ready to part with it. He finally agreed, and she bought it as a gift for Dad. Good luck on your search.

  • i love this song,have looked for everywhere,to no avail.THANK YOU!

  • I also have a copy of this somewhat unusual Chicago soul sound. It really had to grow on me some. Thanks for the chart information on this song. I don't even know who Donald Jenkins was, and have no clue as to who the Delighters were, or where they came from.

  • 57Will

    Appreciate your thoughtful comments.

  • I was born (1948) and raised in Detroit.

This hauntingly beautiful song was released during my adolescence, and I played the 45 till it wouldn't play anymore.

Though not a huge hit, it's one of my all-time favorite songs. So under-rated and under-appreciated.

I can't thank you enough for sharing this with the YouTube audience.

Another fave of mine from that era is "Love You So" by Ron Holden. Circa 1960.

  • Hello Irishman

Thank you for your great comments. Sorry, your version is worn out. My daughter, who is seen in the pre-version of this video bought me this record for my birthday a few years back. "Love you so," Ron Holdon was written while he was serving jail time.

  • Tight ass jam right here.

Its on broken hearted dreamer vol.4!

    I just uploaded it.

  • Hello Oldies

Glad you found this and then found it to upload.

    Ally

  • whatsup.

yeah, its a tight song huh.

  • I also love this song. Hard to beleive that you actually own the orginal 45 record. Also hard to beleive you have this music. Again, this song is very hard to find.

  • Not only is it amazing that he owns the original 45. Harder to believe is the high sound quality, considering its age.

  • Hi Irishman48

Thanks again for the comments. That is the actual record playing on my speakers, of course.

    Take care,

    ally

  • Hi Ilholand88

Appreciate you taking the time to comment. Yes, as mentioned before, my adult daughter bought this 45 for her dad. I was a bit shy to pay the $ for it from a collector and she bought it for me as a birthday present.

  • Hey allycool62! Thanks for the video of Elephant Walk by Donald Jenkins & his Delighters from 1963. I really enjoyed it. I love to hear pre-Beatles rock & roll. ~ Ed

  • Hello Ed Joe

Thank you for letting me know about You Tube and starting my craze with sharing great oldies for those who haven't heard these records in 45 plus years. This was my first attempt as you know, and somehow a family video got attached. Still folks are tuning in.

    Ally

  • Hi Ally, glad you're sharing your great oldies with folks who haven't heard these records in so many years. Yes, I can tell from the other comments how much it means to our fellow youtubers to find and listen to these gems. Thanks for sharing! ~ Eddie Joe
