yea i had a bad belt tensioner on my 92 replaced it and it went away, but it does skweeeek a little when shut down, not as bad as it did tho, the cummins squeak a little tho at shut down at least thats what i herd the old ones do.
No sorry your an idiot, finnnnny is right and it is a very common thing in cummins 5.9 to squeak when they stop, if you dont belive me (which im sure you wont) look it up on the cummins forum!
straight pipe, heat wrap the down pipe and a BHAF intake. take the silencer ring off (sounds beefier) and then slide, grind or replace/remove the fuel plate and crank the star wheel!
go pick up January's issue of Diesel Power. They show the entire bosch p7100 fuel pump (what the 12vs have!) and explain how to take it apart and all that. you can't screw it up if you have that in your hand. itll make life a lot easier and full of smoke and joy.
THE SQUEAK IS THE BELT TENSIONER! It's been delt with. sheesh. No i dont run the turbo open-that's just plain DUMB! Even on a dyno because that bid fan will blow anything into your truck. I use a custom machined/built intake manifold and air intake from a local hot rod shop that gave me a little more than double the horse power of a banks setup and almost triple the torque gain.
if ur talkin about the squeck at the end of the video ur wrong i have yet to hear a cummins engine that doesnt make that sound when my dad bought his 06 dodge it had only 9,000 miles and made the same squek at shut off still does it at 30,000 miles its just the way a cummins shuts fuel off and where they do it at that makes the trucks shake and squeck belts i have heard it from b series all the way up 2 an isx and thats new engines and old i work 4 cummins
I would avoid K&N! I was warned about them after I had installed it on my diesel, and sure enough only after 10,000mi I found fine dust on the inside tubing walls between the filter and turbo and I wasn't operating in dusty conditions! Just trying to help. Nice engine.
if your still looking for a cold air intake go for a aem brute force, they aint cheap but they make that turbo echo! and the dry flow filter is nice too, just was and dry it when it get dirty, im not 100% if they make one for the 12v though
actually yes. its running 9 more psi than the 35 for somereason. but hey-as long as it breaks-no complaints! lol. and even though its bigger, it spools up faster! and sounds wicked awesome! I got mine for 10 bucks at a junkyard, so if you dont mind paying more than that..go for it. it was probably the luckiest finds!
Where the camera is pointing on the turbo, you will see a black snap ring witch you can see on the turbo. You need to take 2 flathead screwdrivers and pry out that ring. Once that is off you take the actual big ring off (the silver looking object around the wheel) You will notice a whistle as the turbo spools up!
Hey dude! Thanks for the tip. i knew the black ring came out but i didnt realize that the metal restricting funnel came out too lol! sounds like a jet engine even more now!
That's a new one on me. That doesn't make any sense really, either. What kind of gauge are you using to measure this? It could only be one of 3 things if that's the case: A stuck turbo waste gate, a clogged/restricted cat/exhaust, or a plug in the intake system up stream of the boost sensor somewhere. Otherwise drive it another 300K, & then see where it's at.
forget the CAI, half of them are warm air and they cost too much. Go down to napa and get the biggest filter you can find that fits. Take the airbox out and make a heat shield out of aluminum or something. It will whistle loud!
K&N is the absolute worst filter you can put on a diesel engine!!! The "oil type cotton/gauze" filters will ruin your engine faster than you want to know. Might as well use an old T-shirt instead. A BHAF (Napa P/N 2790) is alot better, & cheaper if you're looking for a decent cheap filter. It will flow more than enough air, & filters better than OEM will. The BHAF goes in place of the stock airbox. All you need is to attatch it to the air tube going to the turbo to make it work.
i got a red AFE. they gave me the option of blue black or red...and part of my engine's red, so i went with that. sounds amazing. i'll get a vid up soon.
Cool. Yeah, let's see a video! I just picked up a AFE "Blade Runner" intake manifold to go with my AFE airbox. I'll probably do a video of the install when I can find some time to put it on.
If you want more turbo noise, I would recommend taking off that silencer ring on the turbo inlet. If you can afford it, the AFE intakes are the best out there IMPO. If you want a budget intake, get a BHAF and that will give you some good turbo whine for a cheaper price.
Dude get a BHAF sounds awesome on 12 valves!!!! I know cause I got one :]

the squeak is your accesories run by the belt. engine stops so fast from compression that the accesories keep spining
finnnnnny 2 years ago
No, sorry, you're wrong. It was my belt tensioner. But good guess.

hey i just got a 12v can someone tell me the best performance to throw in it for cheaper?

does anyone think a 1988 mack truck turbo would be able to customly fit on this truck?

Yes, go to NAPA and ask them for #2790, it'll push plenty of air through that hx40

did u notice a difference between the stock hx35 and ur hx40 turbo. Would it be worth buying an hx40 for my 12v

I guess i better go look for an hx40 in a junk yard. Like where in the junk yard did you get it from? Did you pull it from a dodge pickup?
Hotrodx199 3 years ago
i found an Hx50 for $40 from a trashed dump truck. that is going to be one wicked setup. maybe i can find an Hx55 and make a nice sale on the 50

I've still got my stock HX35 if you're looking for one. PM me if you're interested.

Hey no problem. Just remember, you don't gain any boost or horsepower, it just makes a whistle as the turbo spools up. Enjoy :)
Hotrodx199 3 years ago
btw-i did gain boost. i have 3 psi at idle. it used to be zero..lol
DieselPowerCummins 3 years ago
Huh??? You shouldn't have any boost at idle. It should be at zero.

i know. its not the gauge. i got another one and it still said that..lol. idk whats up

the last one was auto meter. before that it was 2 different ones from napa. its none of the above by the way. checked EVERYTHING! Lol
DieselPowerCummins 3 years ago
Weird.
Cummins359power 3 years ago
umm it already whistles lol but it'll be louder and w/ a turbo back or straight pipe exhaust and CAI it'll really whistle!
whyzee125 3 years ago
With the silencer ring removed it will make a whistle as it spools up. With it still on it really doesn't whistle until its about spooled up.

NAPA Part # 2790 is a BHAF. Good cheap setup, with excellent filtering/airflow ability
Cummins359power 2 years ago 2
would have to agree...BHAF's are awsome for 12 valves, good air flow, great price range, and there huge!

An AFE, or a BHAF are the only way to go for air boxes on the 2nd Gen DieselRam's. Loose the K&N before it's too late!

just keep the same intake hose and take the box off and stick a cone k&n on the end. works good for me and seemed to cut down on smoke alil
