  • @alexvq100 Heres the download link linuxmint(dot)com/download(dot)php

Theres only three versions - Two Gnome based and One KDE based.

Perhaps the KDE version will work better for you?

  • How Can i upgrade to Linux Mint 12 From terminal

  • @henrypr They don't recommend doing an upgrade that way, but heres the tutorial

    community(dot)linuxmint(dot)com/tutorial/view/62

  • I have an old netbook around 2 - 3 years and was wondering if this version would be to heavy to run on it. It has around 2 Gb RAM but am unsure if the desktop environment, particularly the MGSE environment (which I really like the look of) will make it run slowly

  • @jg2341 Should be fine. I've run Ubuntu (which is heavier on resources) on Netbooks of that age that only have 1GB RAM

  • how dit you get the mate bar on top mine has it missing

  • @Hi675445 Its the Gnome desktop that has that bar along the top. The Mate desktop is like Classic Gnome with the single Application bar at the bottom of the screen.

Log out and switch to the Gnome Desktop

  • why do they release update that could harm u stuped ideare

  • @Hi675445 They shouldn't but it can happen when an update isn't thoroughly tested.

  • 30 seconds to boot up, first world problems

  • @bacardee lol

  • @quidsup What's your favorite desktop environment? I see you use Unity quite a lot.

  • I'm very satisfied from the older releases of Mint such as 9 Isadora and 10 Julia. They are very fast, easy to use, and the desktop is configurable.

  • @hrbear Not much incentive to upgrade then, Mint 9 is still supported for another year.

  • Nice, If you read the titles of all the software, maybe your video would be two minutes longer.

  • Thanks for this! I really needed help trying to install this on my netbook.

  • i love the mint menu on 11. so easy to get to anything u need

  • Google can suck my balls.

  • I'm really not a fan of mint, to me I don't like the look or the interface :/ I'll admit it's a very good and easy OS to use but the ugliness( my opinion) is enough for me to walk the other way :/

  • Why did you block google and not facebook ? lol jk

  • @MrDemilord lol perhaps I will next time

  • how can i automatically log in with MATE?

  • @Benj1GR sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

    change user-session to mate

  • I tried this for a few days. I think the whole UI is a big mess. I prefer the basic gnome-shell over this. For now, I have switched to KDE until gnome3 matures. It's just not ready yet, in my opinion. Hell, ATI users are STILL waiting for fglrx drivers that work properly with gnome-shell.

  • You are becoming more professional by the day, appreciate the video mate!

I feel that I've experienced LinuxMint myself, as I always wanted to try it but didn't the time to do so.

  • @juliobahar Brilliant, thanks

  • I have this installed on a 64GB ssd for my lap top and have been very happy with it. Win7 uses 1800+ MB ram while mint only uses 400MB. Something else to make note of is that win7 basic install with a few extra programs took up over 40GB on the ssd while mint only too 20GB with alot more programs that comes with the release. Libre office does load in 3 sec for me on a fully system install.

  • @TBear0574 Yeah its amazing the difference even a bulky Linux distro like Mint is a lot smaller and lighter than Win7

  • Nice review. Quality improves with each effort.

  • @Gatorman32656 Cheers mate

  • Thanks, I am using Mint 11 still but I think I will upgrade now. I just don't like the Unity desktop so I will go with mint abit more. I don't like the mint menu either but I put in the classic menu from the panel additions.

  • Mate is super buggy, i dont like Gnome3 shell, i dont need a touchpad desktop, i will stay with version 11 of Mint.

  • I have this running on my back up machine and haven't really noticed any great speed issues yet....

    Great review Quids - Thanks.

  • @OmenX13 Thats good you're not having any speed issues. Cheers mate

  • I didn't have any speed issues but I think I like Unity better or even Mint Menu ;) for now.

  • Actually the boot-up and shutdown speed on all 3.X kernels are slower, not just on Mint 12. I can shutdown Mint 11 on my cheap netbook around 3-4s while on the newer kernel with Lubuntu will take around 15s. That's horrible.

  • @watchmen218 I've noticed that as well.

  • @watchmen218 I've noticed that too with the shutdown speed its a few seconds longer in Ubuntu 11.10 compared to 11.04.

  • Great review, as always.

  • @MrStephen182 Cheers

  • meh, i better use ubuntu

  • quidsup removing ubuntu music store and ubuntu one is what got me really mad about their agenda ,no other ubuntu derivative distro is so ungrateful.try pinguy it is much cleaner ,faster more beautiful and ubuntu friendly.plus it takes ease of use to a whole new level.mint parastize on ubuntu and elementary without so much as thank you.

  • @mamado226 Totally agree, I really want to say that, but I suppose it wouldn't be too professional

  • I'm trying Lisa on Vbox as well and no matter what GUI I choose, it keeps loading Gnome 3. I also have installed MATE and the same happens.

  • @gaseabra make sure you've got 3D graphics enabled in vbox and installed the vbox guest additions.

For some reason Mate requires 3D graphics?

  • @quidsup Guest Additions installed and 3d enabled. It happens with both Linux Mint 12 and Ubuntu 11.10. I can't switch to any other GUI.

  • Great review Quid, I to was disappointed by the speed of Mint 12. Coming from Mint 11 it seems to have gotten considerably slower. I was able to speeds up the system speed slightly by using CCSM to disable VSync however. Hope by the time Mint '13' is released Mate is a lot more stable.

  • The delay you're having on the mint menu (the bottom one) is exactly what I had on a system install. It's really annoying. When I installed the proprietary drivers the whole screen went crazy. Sticking with Arch XFCE until new release.

    Good review, cheers.

  • Very nice review quidsup!

Really starting to digg the mate desktop environment!

  • @AnoOtaku Cheers. Yeah Mate is looking good
