my friends advised me to use wella koleston 12/11 Intense Ash +9% on my black virgin hair/ they said it will work and my hair will turn medium or dark blonde without brassiness/ Because its intense ashy tone/ but i don`t want to risk. please help.
My doctor doesn't allow to use 12% vol on my scalp :S because i`m pregnant :) what should i do???
hello great video, i am just wondering my hair is like a golden blonde...with some platnum highlights..and if i used a toner( and whihch one) thinking an ash toner...will it bring me to a light blonde or get rid of the golden blonde?
@xxaprunexx can you use any 10v developer with the 10/16? because the koleston pastel developer is soo expensive ugh...and do you leave it on for 15 minutes like most violet based toners or do you leave it on longer(i am looking for a very white blonde and just bleached my roots but im looking to tone my whole head to freshin up the color)..in the past i have been useing the wella white lady t18 but was not that impressed and heard 10/16 is fantastic and im excited to use it! plz help?!
@platinumlove13 Yes you can 10v works perfectly. Just buy pro oxide or something they are like £1.90 per bottle! You can leave it anytime between 5 and 20 minutes depending on how it looks and how fast it is taking on your hair. The 10/16 is brilliant for toning yellow out as it contains violet.
great video at last someone who knows what there talking about please please can u help me i have medium brown hair although i am only concentrating on the fresh virgin regrowth i have applied goldwell topchic very light ash blonde with a 30 vol its lifted a lot but its brassy is it safe to reapply and is there anything i can put on to get rid of the golden tones.i knnnow of someone who applied goldwell topchic 10 p and its a nice shade of blonde please help thanks
@baserobo1 It is safe to reapply, just keep an eye on how it is lifting and make sure you keep wiping a strand clean and pulling it between your fingers to make sure the strength of your hair is still good. You can apply 10/16 or 10/8 with pastel or any 3% volume developer as shown in the video. Once you achieve a nice colour, top it up weekly by washing your hair with a silver shampoo
Hi there! I watched your video, but I'm still not sure what steps I should take. I put blond highlights in my hair yesterday. I used the quick blue powder with a 40 developer. I have a medium brown hair color (with lots of natural undertones). I left it on for about 40-50 minutes. The highlights are pretty brassy in many parts and kind of yellow in others. What should I use/do to tone this down without ruining the rest of my hair? I want it as blond as possible.
@bathedinshadow I used a cap to do it as well. Will I need to isolate the blond (brassy/orange/yellow) hair somehow? Or will the toner not affect my darker hair?
@bathedinshadow Hi the toner will not affect your darker hair so you can apply it all over. Use half of 10/16 and half of 10/8 mixed together with 3% (mixed sloppy) and leave it on up to 20 minutes or less until you see it turn the colour you want. Keep ontop of this by using a silver shampoo every few washes. These toners are so gentle they will not damage your hair, they only deposit tone
Hi :) Please help, I would really appreciate it. I have just bought 10/8 Koleston Perfect and 8/00 KP, and and will mix them in 3:1 ratio... bought 6% (20 vol devel) also. I am natural base 7. I want to neutralize orange tone (my natural pigment) as much as possible by using 0/88 (blue). How many cm of 0/88 should I use not to mess it up? To achieve that cooler tone, because last time I was a little bit orange.
@JustBigBug Ok, for every 30 mls of tint that you mix (1/2 tube) you use 3cm of mix tone (0/88). That means a 3cm line as you squirt it out into the bowl, not 3cm up the tube. So it is best to put your mix tone into the bowl first before adding your 10/8 and 8/0. For a full tube's worth of tint, use 6cm of 0/88 etc
@xxaprunexx I plan to use 1/3 of 8/0 and 2/3 of 10/8. That should give me approximately a depth 9. I just read in the instructions that for depth 9 we should use 2cm of 0/88 for 30mls. That's 4cm for the full tube. Could you please tell how professionals calculate this mix tone so i'll know in the future. Thanks :)
@JustBigBug Yes that's correct, however if you are very careful in what you are doing you can use the extra cm to give extra power to your blue tone and make sure to get rid of all the orange tone. The rule we use is called the rule of 11. This means you take the base you are using ie base 6, 7, 8 and add to it to make 11. So base 6 add 5 = 11. So this means we use 5cm of mix tone. (per 30 mls of tint). base 7 +4=11, 8+3=11 etc etc. The only exception is when using a base 12 you always use 3cm
what will happen if i dye( lightening) my black virgin hair with wella koleston 12/89+9%peroxide ?? 12% peroxide is too strong! after this using toners.
@AyyGunn I'm afraid the 12/89 is designed to be used with 12% on the scalp. Using This with 9% is risky business as you could end up with brassiness. I would suggest using it with the 12%, or if youre not comfortable, have some mild bleach highlights and just let them lighten slowly till they are as light as you want them, then tone them with a 10/8 or 10/16 to kill off any warm tones. That might be less of a shock than doing a full head colour.
from one professional to another, great job! I just did my red colored hair blonde. i was gonna wait til Christmas, but couldn't wait. I'll have a pic up soon.I did it myself with sum help at my Salon. It looks cute! I just used the products from work. I used a 20 devloper for my roots & a 30 for the rest.I take it,u do hair, right?
Is there like a blue-green based toner? Or a teal one? I'm straying away from purple because I don't like that gray, silver, white look. I'm trying to achieve a blonde that has a little bit of yellow in it, so that it's not white, but an ashy kind, not a banana yellow or warm tone. Would I just need a blue toner for that? Or would that just make my hair cool toned? Or would it make my hair ashy too and not just cool toned?
Hi!I have very dark roots but my ends are a coppery brown.I eventually want to go a clean blonde. My hair throws alot of copper and when i used to be blonde i used the 12/89 or 12/81(dont remember which one) with 0/88(the ash toner) mixed in to counteract brassiness.Do those umbers still exist or can i use the 1210 with 0/88 or similar with 12% peroxide?sorry if u can't understand me.cheer
I intend to put foils through to get the blonde on the rest of my hair to get it blonde
@TheTinaki1 Hi. Yes the 12/89 still exists, and so does the 0/88. Remember to use 3cm of 0/88 per 30mls of tint that you use, and remember to let the colour develop for a full hour to maximise colour results. Definitly use 12% peroxide and cover your hair well. You will probably only need to use foils with bleach and 3% volume to get those lighter.

@jjccllnn170285 Hi, hair loses the ash tone over time as it gradually fades. I suggest using the colour that you like, then shampooing your hair every couple of washes with a purple shampoo to stop it from becoming brassy
hi! I made my hair at home using 9.1 and 9.2 with 30 vol.colleston perfect and I was a little orange instead of sandre ...then i used 9 1/2 -111 iggora and I steel hane orange hair ...please help me how to get rid of the orange colour instead going to a hair salon....!!!!!
@redsqueamish You can make it semi permenant by mixing it with 10 vol developer and using double the amount of developer so it is sloppy. On bleached or porous hair it will last very effectively, and less long-lasting on natural or darker colours. by the time you need your roots doing it should be ready for another application.
@xxaprunexx thank you for your reply....... I think that here in athens I wοn't find 8.81 but I' ll try.to look for it......when you say 12% you mean 40 vol or higher? and at last ....the orange from my hair will dissapear if I use an orange based?.and then ...what I'll become more ashen? cause I want my hair to be as ashen as they could be......like green. I don't want to be very blonde...I want to be in the tone of 8 or 9 ...thanks again....
@maera71 any shade with an /8 tone will give you a BLUE base. This kills orange and will make it more ash. If you could find 8/8 or 8/89 or 8/18 anything along those lines will work. Yes, 12% is 40 vol developer. You need this to activate the minimum of 4 shades lift to get you past those brassy areas :)
the most of my hair is light yellow blonde, and there is a tiny bit of white blonde mixed in under the top layer.... but my ends are a light ginger color... how can I correct this???
@misspanduhluv Well first of all, don't touch any white blonde bits with the toner if you can avoid it, they will grab the colour and go grey. You have a few options, simplest is to try to get most of the ginger ends cut off and buy a silver shampoo to correct all the yellow in the rest of your hair. Or if you would prefer, you can buy 10/16 toner (violet) and apply that to your yellow parts, and apply 10/8 toner (blue) to your ginger ends. Mix your toners 1 part tint + 2 parts 10 vol developer
@misspanduhluv (ran out of space) you can apply them to the correct areas both at the same time, then leave on for up to 20 minutes. Or take them off as soon as you see the brassiness has gone. Always apply toners to shampooed, towel dried hair with no conditioner. You will rinse and condition after the toner.
Funny thing is I'm a guy with natural white blond hair.I always wanted darker.Other people go through a lot of expense and trouble.I didn't know it was that complicated.
@xxaprunexx I've just coloured my hair using John Frieda Precision Foam in 10N (Extra Light Natural Blonde). Now I love the colour through my lengths but from my roots for about 2 inches it's a slight yellow/ginger colour. I don't want to colour it again (I know I shouldn't anyways) so I was wondering what sort of toner I could use to rectify this and where I would get it from? Thanks! X
@SaxxVTS The most gentlest and maintainable way of correcting this is to buy a silver shampoo which contains purple tones, and use this to shampoo your hair with, mainly rubbing it into your roots. You can do this once a week or every few washes to help tone the yellow away. You could get them from sallys or a similar supply shop, or if not you could probably get one on ebay. matrix do a nice one called so silver, and clynol do a good one too.
the majority of my hair looks 'bleach blonde' and then the roots are a light ginger blonde so I think its lifted enough but just the wrong colour - a sort of orangy blonde. Sorry I don't understand the % lift thing completely, but I know my hairdresser feels like she is using a very high % vol. If she is using an ash blonde should it go goldy orange or is that a sign that she is not using a high enough vol. The colour looks a lot worse the day after being washed. Sorry if Im not being clear!
@beckyhidle Ok so it's just the tone that needs to be addressed. I would suggest using high lift tint with 40 vol (they're designed to work together). I would say because you get orange, you need to use blue. So I would use 12/89. Always mix 1 part 12/89 with 2 parts 40 vol. You MUST leave this on for a full hour because it spends 40 minutes lifting, and the remaining 20 minutes toning the brassiness to leave a clean blonde. Do this on your roots plus the areas that are ginger
@beckyhidle I would also say if this still doesn't quite kill enough warmth, you can buy a tube of mixtone concentrate in 0/88 which is blue. And add 3cm into your mixture which will boost it to tone out the orange. Also, don't go over your bleached areas when you are tinting as they will pick up the ash tone very quickly. Hope this helps you
Hi, pls help! I have had about 4 full head colours after having highlights for yrs. My hair is naturally dk brown. My hairdresser is not really sure what colour to use to get the results I want and is using an Ash blonde either magiblonde or koleston, but my hair is getting more ginger-like each time at the roots (altough she is still putting a few bleach foils in). What do I need to do to get it to go more beige blonde and get rid of the ginger colour? Thanks
@beckyhidle Ok first of all I need to know do you feel like your hair is lifted light enough and it's just very brassy, or is the colour still too dark on the roots after its been coloured?

Thanks! So how does it work to break the base... what do I use? My hair dresser does the bleach foils, washes them out and then applies a product all over, that lifts the virgin roots in between highlights (from a med brown to a med blonde- without any orange) and also tones the highlights. What could that be? Really appreciate your help!
Hi I have a few questions. 1)I can't buy Toners without a license in my area- is it possible to use a demi-permanent dye? Will that work to take away yellow tones? 2) In your highlights video you suggest using a low vol. developer if you're doing your own hair... if you use a low vol. will it bring it up to a pale enough shade? (I have med brown hair). Also, do you know how to "break the base" when you've done highlights(bring remaining base colour to a lighter but toned level?) Thanks!
@balletbabe103 1) You could buy a demi yes but it just wont be quite as tailored to your needs, make sure you choose an ash shade though. 2) Yes! Bleach will lift to blonde even with the lowest developer, it is just much gentler and a slower process. This is better because it does not shatter your hair by lifting really fast and aggressively. 3) The best way to do this is apply your foils first and fold them up tight, then apply your base tint around the foils, letting them process together.
@balletbabe103 Also, if you apply your tint around your foils and the foils are done before the tint, just pull the foils out one by one, and wipe the bleach off those pieces of hair with wet cotton wool and then just wait for your tint to catch up.
Thank you. Just one last question. when i go to touch up my roots as my natural colour is darker what % would i use or would i still use the 4% as you said for taking the brassy colour out. i always thought you use a higher % to lift the colour? :)
@123tarz well it depends on how dark you are, colour touch can only lift half or 1 shade, so if you are darker you would need to use the shades in permenant tint. 6% developer will lift 1-2 shades, 9% will lift 2-3 shades and 12% will lift 3-4 shades. Just Use your own judgement to decide which one you think you will need to lift it light enough :)
hi, i had my hair dyed and loved it i asked what colour i should us to touch up my root and was told to use 9/01 wella colour touch i did this and it was brassy and a bit too light i think so i am going to follow you advise u gave some1 else & us a 8/0 and 0/66 to take out the tinge (hope this is ok for me) but what should i us when my roots come through. im natually mousey brown? my hair is very damaged as a 60vol and bleach (highlights) was used 3 times with heat and has broken off alot :(
Hi im hoping you can help i hade my hair dyed by a distant famiy member who is a hairdresser. i asked her when my roots come through what should i use. i am natually mousey brown, she told me to us wella colour touch 9/01 i used this and it come out brassy and a little to light. im going to use an 8/0 with a hint of 0/66 all over as you previously advised some one else (hope this is ok for me) but i wanted to know what i can use on my roots when they come through so i can touch them up. :)
@123tarz this would work for you, just make sure to only apply the 8/0 and your 0/66 (2cm of it) to the brassy areas, then only run it through your whole hair for the last 5 or 10 minutes. if your hair is very highlighted it could grab and go purple otherwise! As for your roots, you did the right thing to choose an ash tone, however, you must choose the right ash tone to cancel out yellow and orange, those would be /8 and /6. So i'd do your roots with 30ml 8/0 +1.5cm of 0/88 + 1.5cm of 0/66 :)
@123tarz And also, you can get the exact same colours that I just mentioned including the 0/88 and 0/66 mix tones in colour touch if you prefer to use that. Always use it with 4% too when choosing a light shade :)
I have a question I hope you might be able to help me with. I over-toned my hair and it's a silver/gray blonde in the fringe/bang only (where my hair is most dry & porous). I have asked a lot of different people for advice on how to get rid of the horrible 'granny' coloured tinge and I've heard Head & Shoulders, Clarifying shampoo, bleach powder & hot water and even ketchup. What do you think is best to get rid of the gray?
@SuperHelloKitty85 Hi, what you need to do to correct this is use wella koleston perfect 10/0 with pastel developer (mixing double developer to the tint so it is sloppy) then apply it to the problem area, this will draw out the grey tone. Don't rely on any specific time for the toner to work, You just need to watch the colour change in the mirror, and when it looks neutral then rinse and condition your hair.
and i forgot to tell that her natural hair is like 5 which mean it is hard to lift with 12.89 to the color that we want. So we kinda have to do bleaching process... thanks again
hi, firstly thanks for helping us=) i have some questions about toning blonde hair. I usually dye my cousins hair bu using 40vol. developer to bleach her roots and then 9/8 to tone her hair. But this time i want to try something else for hair and doing it in right way. i bought koleston 12/89, but is it possible to use it after bleaching the hair with a 20vol. developer within 1:1 ratio? i really can't understand the difference between those three 9/8, 10/8 and 12/89 could u please tell?
@tamerkable well the 12/89 can't be used as a toner, as it is specifically designed to lighten. The 10/8, mixed with pastel developer is designed to tone, so would just kill orange. If you are left with Yellow you would tone with 10/16 instead. Level 9 isnt really designed to work as a toner so you wouldnt get such a good result with that as using the level 10. Just make sure you bleach the hair light enough in the first place to be able to tone it. Mix toner as 1:2 so double developer to tint
@LemonnSugarr the difference is 9/1 has 100% ash tone whereas 9/01 is natural with some ash tones. I would personally choose something with blue in which would be 10/8 or 9/8 to do this effectively. The '/1' tones arent designed to neutralise anything in particular, theyre really quite a neutral ash tone.
@xxaprunexx I decided to use KP 9/01 and my hair is now yellowish golden shade :o( I realized now that my roots are more yellowish/golden than orange as I thought before. So probably I'd need to use next time Koleston Perfect with violet base, to neutralize my yellow pigment, right? What shade in level 8 would you recommend? Level 9 turned out to be too light for me. Thanks for any help.
@LemonnSugarr There is no shade in the level 8's with violet tone in so you have to make your own. Buy 8/0 as your base, and also buy the concentrated mix tone 0/66 which is pure violet tone. squirt out the 8/0 - as much as you think you need for your whole head and add into it 2 to 3 centimetres of the 0/66 and NO more. be VERY sparing with this, and make sure you add the correct amount - if you add too much it will take over the mixture and turn your hair too purple. Use with 20 vol developer
@xxaprunexx That's exactly what I wanted to hear :) ! Special violet mix! But please, specify what 2-3 cm from what? Drom top of the newly opened tube? How to measure it correctly? Should it be 1/2 of the teaspoon approx? How do I recognize how much is too much? I will be delighted to use this violet base!! Thanks so much.
@LemonnSugarr as you squirt the tint into your bowl, make a little line of the tint. This line should measure 2-3cm. On some Tint bowls they have a little measurement guide on the bottom to help you out. Best to put your violet mix tone into the bowl first before your 8/0 to make it easier for you :)
I'm still slightly confused, plz could u help me. My hair naturally is about a level 4 or 5 and I normally dye it with 8/01 light blonde/natural ash. The end result is medium brown colour but with loads of orange brassy tones all over especially at the roots so the colour looks kinda patchy (light roots fading to darker colour all over). My main issue is the brassiness, even hairdressers have struggled to get rid of it! Could you please help me with what colour I should mix for toner, thanks
@PrincezzJadi Hiya, let me explain why you are getting the brassiness: Because you are so dark naturally, lifting your hair up using a level 8 will not lift far enough as the regular shades only have the ability to lift 2 shades - exposing all the orange that is in your hair. To lift yourself up to a base 8, I would definitly use the 12 series (12/89) with blue tones to kill that brassiness. This will not take you white blonde, it will just take you past the 'brassy' level.
@PrincezzJadi so... I would use the 12/89 with 40 vol all over your hair for 60 minutes (in order for all the tone to work) remembering to mix double amount of developer with the tint. That should get rid of your problem, and for up-keep i would tone with the 10/8 and VERY low developer. Hope this helps
@xxaprunexx Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna try in a few weeks time because I've only just dyed it with Wella Colour Touch. How much time would you recommend for me to bleach it again because I've just dyed it?
@xxaprunexx Sorry another question, would 30vol not be strong enough to lift to a level 8?? Just don't want to damage my hair too much and think 40vol will leave my ends really dry as I have naturally curly hair.
@PrincezzJadi No, Im afraid it wouldnt. The 40 Vol is designed for use with the 12 series, it wont damage your hair. The only time it would cause damage is if you were using it with bleach. If youre worried about doing this though, you could just start doing your roots with the 12/89 and 40 vol as they grow through each time, and just use the 10/8 toner on the rest of your hair.
my natural hair coulour is dark golden blonde, i highlighted my hair bleach blonde but i recently stopped getting the highlights done because my hairdresser wouldnt do them to my root and done them too thick (family hairdresser) & i got fed up so i coloured all my hair ash blonde, but my roots have gone slightly orange & the highlights are obviously still there,
not sure what i can do just want lighter blonde hair! can you help me please lol?
@NicolaJude Do your roots with the Koleston Perfect Special Blonde 12/89 and 40 vol peroxide. Apply also across the root area you coloured with the ash blonde, to lift that up too and prevent brassiness. Try to pick out the other bits of hair that arent highlighted as best you can, and colour those with it too but avoid the bleached pieces. Let it process for a full hour (so it tones too), and remember to mix it with 1 part colour and 1 part peroxide. You can buy these from a salon supply store.
@xxaprunexx sorry slightly confused, not sure about where i can buy any of that stuff, also as i have so many highlights its slightly hard to pick them out i can pick some out though. I was just woundering if theres any highstreet colour i can buy that will do the same thing?
@NicolaJude To be honest I can't recommend anything as specific as the wella stuff, but you can probably buy wash in-wash out ash toners for blonde which should do the trick - can usually buy those from drug stores etc or anywhere that sells hair dyes.
I'm going to try doing my roots myself - can't afford to keep going to hairdresser. She used Schwarzkopf - 8 range - and the Pro-Oxide Creme Peroxide 6& and 20 vol. This was the only one that gave maximum coverage of grey hairs too. The only thing is I'm not sure of the amounts to use - how much colour to peroxide. You seem to know what you're talking about, so could you advise me?

@Phyl1001 The mixing ratio is 1:1. So for example 30mls of colour mixed with 30 mls of peroxide. The development time is 35-45 minutes (no less than 35 mins) and always apply on dry, product-free hair. Hope that answers your question
I've highlighted my hair (which was originally pretty ginger) and toned it with Wella 10-Ivory Lady, and the highlights have definitely toned but the hair that was originally really ginger colored is still that! But Ivory Lady says "violet-blue", will that not work for my red hair? Does it need to be just a blue base? So confused! Love the video, thank you so much!
@mirandarosepetal Im guessing you mean your natural colour is ginger and youve highlighted it. In which case - The highlighted bits were lightened so they toned well, but natural hair colour or hair too dark isn't tone-able. You would need to use a quasi permenant (colour touch by wella) to neutralise the ginger. Youre best opting for something like the 7/1 (light ash brown) with 4% developer to cover it. Just try to separate the highlights as best you can and not colour those too.
ok ive bleached my hair 4 times now from black, i used a stripper first but it didnt seem to do much but after all of that im left with an odd combo of colours, my natural hair colour is quite light so my roots are white and so are some random patches but the most part of my hair is an odd sortov yellowish orange its lighter in areas so im not sure wich toner to use because im not really sure of the colour. it is almost blonde though so please help because the colour is awful lol thank you
@kristiekangaroocat Unless your hair is very pale and yellowy I would opt for the blue toner (10/8) with very low developer - 10 vol or less really. Only apply the toner to the parts where it is needed, and DO NOT put the toner onto your white roots as it will grab and turn blue very quickly. Apply it to the areas you need and then watch it for up to 20 minutes and rinse about a minute after it looks like the brassinss has gone. make sure the darkest patches are light enough first though
hi me again I was just wondering, do you think Blondor is the best bleach, it's £11.85 and I've been using a blue powder bleach verrry cheap, do you think I should use a better one, which do you recommend? xxxx Thanks!!!
@hobuspobus I personally use INDOLA white bleach powder which when I buy it only costs about £6 for a tub. I find it works just as well as the more expensive bleaches, as it's still professional bleach. It is more important to use a good quality peroxide developer as this is the vital ingredient that helps the bleach do its job
@xxaprunexx Idola? hmm not seen that one, there is one called rapid white about that price. The blue powder I used costs like £2 haha. But it worked great last time, but this time I used a horrible cheap developer so you're right! The one I used was TruZone omg AVOID! Have you tried it, was that the culprit?? it has bleached really unevenly am not sure what to do - the streaks are half orange, does that mean must re bleach the strand? xxxx thanks so much
@hobuspobus No I haven't tried that so I will stay away from it! Sounds like that was the problem. You need to tone the orange bits with a 10/8 and a very low developer, Don't re-bleach anymore because you will just damage the hair futher. Keep using the correct coloured toners on the bleached bits, get your hair in good condition, and just concentrate on getting the roots the right colour as they grow through - have the highlights as i suggested before etc just on the roots as they grow
@xxaprunexx hi again, thank you so much! I am a tiny bit unsure, but I guess all I need to buy then is 10/8 and use it with my pastel? I was thinking I had to do more streaks using 12% (to make sure it lifts!) with 12/89 but will that be equally as damaging as bleaching again...? I should bleach again but my hair needs to recover, as you say. The developer meant the bleach didnt lift evenly, so worried toning won't help enough. It looks so bland, the streaks aren't showing up well I'm so upset x
@hobuspobus Yeah your easiest gentlest option is to tone the orange bits with the 10/8 and pastel. The 12/89 is not as damaging as bleach as it is only a tint, and also the 12/ series stop developing when they are ready, so they will not over process. Make sure you mix double developer with your 12/89, and make sure you leave it for a full hour because it lifts in the first 45 minutes and tones in the last 15. I'd just avoid the bleach and see what results you can get without having to use it
@xxaprunexx thanks! I am sorry to be slow, not sure what double developer means? just ratio of peroxide to hair colour I'm guessing... Should I use 9% (30 vol) 6% (20 vol) or get 12 % (40 vol) do you think? Also, do I tone first and then highlight, or put the highlights in first? I am guessing h/l first.. I'd used 7/7 as base shade which is v. warm, want it all to go ashy, was thinking of toning it all, not just streaks. It's not disaster orange, it's just all a bit too warm, thx for help! xx
@hobuspobus yes i mean 1 part 12/89 and 2 parts 12% (40 vol). Do your highlights first. It will be more difficult to tone 7/7 without using something like a 7/1 and 20 vol to cover as best you can. If you apply your 10/8 toner (also double developer) all over it will only take on the highlights, and just rinse it off when it looks ashy enough for you.
@xxaprunexx Thanks again, I am about to do it now. I forgot to buy 40 vol so am going to use 30 vol I bet it won't work what do you suggest? Am off to do it now though so unless you happen to be on, looks like I will just wing it. Hope it works. I am going to then apply 10/8 to tone and hope it makes it all look overall more ash. Thanks!!! xxxxxx will let you know if it works maybe send you a pic haha
@hobuspobus Oh I see. It all sounds good but if you dont use 40 vol you will not get the lift and it could be a bit brassy thats all. Let me know how you get on
@xxaprunexx hi yes gone WARMER oh no! but well I think I'll leave it as not much I can do. I think I put the new highlights in too close so now looks like I've just put down a chunk of blonde, very DIY!
I wonder if I could request 2 vids if you have time, one on how to do highlights - not the actual process so much as the spacing; and one on how to bleach a full head yourself - say to get from level 6 to platinum all over. Thanks LOADS for your help, will send you a pic if you want to see :/
SUCH a useful video! I am having a horrible time, my hair looks really mousey I don't know what to do?? I have been highlighting and re hightling it so the ends etc are really dry and frazzled. I used the Koleston toner with 10/03 and like it, but maybe it's too gold now and looking frumpy? Any tips on how to get it to look less dull and maybe more streaky but with minimal damage... I am thinking of highlighting AGAIN as the colour went uneven, oh dear :(
@hobuspobus I would start by buying a re-constructing treatment conditioner and using it once a week sleeping with it in your hair and rinsing in the morning. This will repair the damage over time. I would also use a blow-drying spray for shine and to protect the hair. The best solution is to do some highlights with bleach and some with 12/89 but DO NOT overlap the bleach onto any previous highlights, only ever do the roots. This way you can have nice golden blonde alongside the very light blond
@xxaprunexx oh 12/89 better than just bleaching it and toning it with 10/16? also it is all coloured now so damage pro all over :( The highlights haven't lifted evenly am not very happy want to fix it, which way is best, will go to the shop tomorrow xxxxx thank you again, omg wish I found this vid this morning aargh haha xxxx
hi, i have natural strawberry blonde hair & i want it to be a bit more of a natural-looking blonde. i thot that mayb using a toner on it wud take away any orange/ginger tones in my hair. do u think this wud work & how wud u recomend i do it?
@aibhlinneeson Because your colour is natural, you will need something a little bit stronger than a toner, so I recommend using a demi-permenant colour which is also very gentle on your hair. The tones in your hair will be gold + red, which together make orange. So you would need to use a blue tone to neutralise it. I would choose an 8/81 (level 8 blonde with blue and ash) in 'Colour touch' by Wella. You can buy this at Sallys or from the internet. Mix 1 part colour with 2 parts of 4% developer
Hello :) thanks so much for your video. I've had platinum blonde hair for ages but now I want to go to a white beige colour, like a platinum blonde glazed with honey with honey/neautral highlights kind of thing. They do the koleston range at my local Sally's, do you thik you could recommend a shade? I noticed thy have a newish one out 12/69 called Special Cendre Violet Blonde. And finally, after I've bleached my hair, do I apply the toner to wet, damp or dried hair? Thanks again for a great vid.
Apply your toner to shampooed towel dried hair, with no conditioner applied. Also, make sure that you avoid your freshly bleached roots at all cost! I guess by you saying white beige that you are wanting a touch of very light warmth and gold into your hair. I think you could actually use an ash toner and a gold toner and alternate these between random strands of your hair. By that I mean just pick out random pieces and apply the gold toner and on the other bits your ash. (10/03 gold) (10/16 ash)
What if your hair is kind of both (yellow AND orange)? Mine seems to have a dark urine-ish color. Lol. It's really quite ugly. And this is after I went to a salon and spent $110 trying to get the orangish brassy color out. It looks better, but not by much. And it's so much darker than I would like. Any advice?
@BrittanyER86 You would need to pick out the yellow bits as best you can and apply a violet toner - (matrix SPV and wella koleston 10/16 are the 2 best) and apply a blue toner to the orange bits as best you can - wella koleston 10/81 is the best for that I find. Mix them both with a very low developer as stated in the video and let them process as the instructions tell you OR until you see your hair visually change colour to a nice creamy neutral tone.
Wonderful advice! I am DESPERATE! My hair is dyed blonde/long, with 2 diff demarc lines cuz color was not matched properly at salon. I used hair color remover & re-dyed w/Loreal's #9 Bl Moon. Most hair turned out beautiful, but 3" from root is orange. So, I tried 'Brass Blaster' & it removed some blonde left orange on top (the 3 " fr root). What toner formula can I use to fix the orange? Should I re-dye using the Lt Blonde again & use your toner formula on top? Have event tomorrow. TY!!
Hey, thanks so much for posting- you saved me from a major hair disaster as i was about to run to sallys tomorrow to pick up a tonner for my highlighted blonde. :) However i would like your advice. I cant afford the salon until next month but in the mean time i need help. I normally get my hair done at a salon but i thought i would do my roots by myself. I used nice and easy (summer blonde SB2) and it turned my highlights white and my previously golden bonde hair brassy and patchy. Any advice?
Hi, Could you please advise me on what to use on doing a 2 colour hilights on a head that is med to dark blonde with quite a lot of red in it. At the moment the light blonde is fine I just use bleach, but I used 8.1 with 20 and 30 vol peroxide but its far too brassy. could you recommend something I could use that would lift it to a soft more ashy blonde please?
for lifting un-coloured hair of a level 6 or above, I'd recommend using the high lift tint range from wella Koleston. It can lift up to 4 shades which will take you past the area of warmth you're getting using the 8.1. if you're exposing a lot of copper try the 12/89 or 12/81 for a cool blonde. the 8.1 will only lift 2 shades maximum, that's why you're getting brassy results. Hope this helps
Great! I dont know if you've used the high lift tints before, but you use double developer (1:2) and also you must leave it for the full hour (or 30 under heat) because it only adds the tone in the last 10 minutes. Let me know how it goes
Yes have used Loreals Mjiblond but not Koleston so I imagine its the same principle. I tried to avoid using the hi lift to preserve the condition but quite honestly I cant tell any difference and the colour is all wrong so I havent gained anything. Would you say the Koleston is better than the Loreal ? Thank you so much for all your advice its much appreciated!
I wonder if you could tell me what make is your mannequin head cos Ive just bought one and its very poor , supposed to be 16inches long but its more like 7 or 8 in parts it is real hair though.
@8barnowl I have two, one is a 'sibel' one with brown hair, and the other is a sally 'salon-services' one. i bought them both off the internet and both are good as they have 100% human hair but the salon services one has coarser hair which was pretty long to begin with and it is more designed for up-do's. I have no idea of either of the model numbers, but the brands seem to be good with plenty of hair on the heads.
Hi I really enjoyed your video it was really informative! I've actually gone to two salons already and have asked them to help me get rid of my orange hair and so far they really have done nothing. Now I just have orange hair with orange highlights I can send you a picture if it helps. So i'm trying to get to a cooler dark ash blond from here...Could you give me some advice as to which toner/developer I should use?
Yeah a picture would be helpful for me to help recommend a specific shade. However orange hair definitly needs a blue toner. As long as the hair is evenly bleached to orange all over I suggest either using Wella 'Colour Touch' 9/01 with 4% (13vol) developer for something more permenant, or to tone with blue, wella koleston perfect 10/8 with 3% 10 vol
ok! so, i bleached my hair twice last year, and then it was so..brassy, that i just dyed it back to brown (and oh joy, the colour fades with every wash:S) anyways, what toner could i use on my brown hair?its like...light brown right now. would the manic panic virgin white toner work there...or...should I use something else?:S
I'm guessing you just want to stop the brown from fading, rather than get rid of brassiness. The best option for that is to use a demi (or quasi) permenant. These are used widely for toning, and they can also keep your colour refreshed. Colour touch (Wella) is a great brand. I suggest when you do your roots brown, apply the demi permenant on the rest of your hair like a toner, then rinse the whole lot. If you ask at a beauty supply they will help you choose a shade+ you only need 7vol developer
@Amaajah ahhh no. is my accent bad?! It's only UK English accent. thanks for watching. I'll explain anything you didn't catch in writing if you let me know
Honey, i`m sorry for asking a question twice :)
my friends advised me to use wella koleston 12/11 Intense Ash +9% on my black virgin hair/ they said it will work and my hair will turn medium or dark blonde without brassiness/ Because its intense ashy tone/ but i don`t want to risk. please help.
My doctor doesn't allow to use 12% vol on my scalp :S because i`m pregnant :) what should i do???

hello great video, i am just wondering my hair is like a golden blonde...with some platnum highlights..and if i used a toner( and whihch one) thinking an ash toner...will it bring me to a light blonde or get rid of the golden blonde?
illumination4nation 1 month ago
@xxaprunexx can you use any 10v developer with the 10/16? because the koleston pastel developer is soo expensive ugh...and do you leave it on for 15 minutes like most violet based toners or do you leave it on longer(i am looking for a very white blonde and just bleached my roots but im looking to tone my whole head to freshin up the color)..in the past i have been useing the wella white lady t18 but was not that impressed and heard 10/16 is fantastic and im excited to use it! plz help?!
platinumlove13 1 month ago
@platinumlove13 Yes you can 10v works perfectly. Just buy pro oxide or something they are like £1.90 per bottle! You can leave it anytime between 5 and 20 minutes depending on how it looks and how fast it is taking on your hair. The 10/16 is brilliant for toning yellow out as it contains violet.

great video at last someone who knows what there talking about please please can u help me i have medium brown hair although i am only concentrating on the fresh virgin regrowth i have applied goldwell topchic very light ash blonde with a 30 vol its lifted a lot but its brassy is it safe to reapply and is there anything i can put on to get rid of the golden tones.i knnnow of someone who applied goldwell topchic 10 p and its a nice shade of blonde please help thanks
baserobo1 1 month ago
@baserobo1 It is safe to reapply, just keep an eye on how it is lifting and make sure you keep wiping a strand clean and pulling it between your fingers to make sure the strength of your hair is still good. You can apply 10/16 or 10/8 with pastel or any 3% volume developer as shown in the video. Once you achieve a nice colour, top it up weekly by washing your hair with a silver shampoo
xxaprunexx 1 month ago
I want it as blond as possible.
bathedinshadow 2 months ago
@bathedinshadow I used a cap to do it as well. Will I need to isolate the blond (brassy/orange/yellow) hair somehow? Or will the toner not affect my darker hair?
Thanks! :)
bathedinshadow 2 months ago
@bathedinshadow Hi the toner will not affect your darker hair so you can apply it all over. Use half of 10/16 and half of 10/8 mixed together with 3% (mixed sloppy) and leave it on up to 20 minutes or less until you see it turn the colour you want. Keep ontop of this by using a silver shampoo every few washes. These toners are so gentle they will not damage your hair, they only deposit tone
xxaprunexx 1 month ago
Hi :) Please help, I would really appreciate it. I have just bought 10/8 Koleston Perfect and 8/00 KP, and and will mix them in 3:1 ratio... bought 6% (20 vol devel) also. I am natural base 7. I want to neutralize orange tone (my natural pigment) as much as possible by using 0/88 (blue). How many cm of 0/88 should I use not to mess it up? To achieve that cooler tone, because last time I was a little bit orange.
Tnx very much
JustBigBug 3 months ago
@JustBigBug Ok, for every 30 mls of tint that you mix (1/2 tube) you use 3cm of mix tone (0/88). That means a 3cm line as you squirt it out into the bowl, not 3cm up the tube. So it is best to put your mix tone into the bowl first before adding your 10/8 and 8/0. For a full tube's worth of tint, use 6cm of 0/88 etc
xxaprunexx 3 months ago
@xxaprunexx I plan to use 1/3 of 8/0 and 2/3 of 10/8. That should give me approximately a depth 9. I just read in the instructions that for depth 9 we should use 2cm of 0/88 for 30mls. That's 4cm for the full tube. Could you please tell how professionals calculate this mix tone so i'll know in the future. Thanks :)
JustBigBug 3 months ago
@JustBigBug Yes that's correct, however if you are very careful in what you are doing you can use the extra cm to give extra power to your blue tone and make sure to get rid of all the orange tone. The rule we use is called the rule of 11. This means you take the base you are using ie base 6, 7, 8 and add to it to make 11. So base 6 add 5 = 11. So this means we use 5cm of mix tone. (per 30 mls of tint). base 7 +4=11, 8+3=11 etc etc. The only exception is when using a base 12 you always use 3cm

@xxaprunexx Tnx,I got it ;) You really helped me... Cross fingers I don't turn blue ;-) :-D

what will happen if i dye( lightening) my black virgin hair with wella koleston 12/89+9%peroxide ?? 12% peroxide is too strong! after this using toners.
wanna get very light ashy brown shade.
AyyGunn 3 months ago
@AyyGunn I'm afraid the 12/89 is designed to be used with 12% on the scalp. Using This with 9% is risky business as you could end up with brassiness. I would suggest using it with the 12%, or if youre not comfortable, have some mild bleach highlights and just let them lighten slowly till they are as light as you want them, then tone them with a 10/8 or 10/16 to kill off any warm tones. That might be less of a shock than doing a full head colour.

TheTinaki1 5 months ago
@TheTinaki1 Hi. Yes the 12/89 still exists, and so does the 0/88. Remember to use 3cm of 0/88 per 30mls of tint that you use, and remember to let the colour develop for a full hour to maximise colour results. Definitly use 12% peroxide and cover your hair well. You will probably only need to use foils with bleach and 3% volume to get those lighter.

maera71 9 months ago
@maera71 Hi. Your best bet is to use an orange based colour. Try using 8/81 koleston perfect with 12% :)
xxaprunexx 9 months ago
@xxaprunexx just wondering, is 8/81 semi permanent? and if so how often would you have to use it? Regards
redsqueamish 9 months ago in playlist Amazing foxy hair
@redsqueamish You can make it semi permenant by mixing it with 10 vol developer and using double the amount of developer so it is sloppy. On bleached or porous hair it will last very effectively, and less long-lasting on natural or darker colours. by the time you need your roots doing it should be ready for another application.
xxaprunexx 9 months ago
@xxaprunexx thank you for your reply....... I think that here in athens I wοn't find 8.81 but I' ll try.to look for it......when you say 12% you mean 40 vol or higher? and at last ....the orange from my hair will dissapear if I use an orange based?.and then ...what I'll become more ashen? cause I want my hair to be as ashen as they could be......like green. I don't want to be very blonde...I want to be in the tone of 8 or 9 ...thanks again....
maera71 9 months ago
@maera71 any shade with an /8 tone will give you a BLUE base. This kills orange and will make it more ash. If you could find 8/8 or 8/89 or 8/18 anything along those lines will work. Yes, 12% is 40 vol developer. You need this to activate the minimum of 4 shades lift to get you past those brassy areas :)
xxaprunexx 9 months ago
the most of my hair is light yellow blonde, and there is a tiny bit of white blonde mixed in under the top layer.... but my ends are a light ginger color... how can I correct this???
misspanduhluv 9 months ago
@misspanduhluv Well first of all, don't touch any white blonde bits with the toner if you can avoid it, they will grab the colour and go grey. You have a few options, simplest is to try to get most of the ginger ends cut off and buy a silver shampoo to correct all the yellow in the rest of your hair. Or if you would prefer, you can buy 10/16 toner (violet) and apply that to your yellow parts, and apply 10/8 toner (blue) to your ginger ends. Mix your toners 1 part tint + 2 parts 10 vol developer
xxaprunexx 9 months ago
@misspanduhluv (ran out of space) you can apply them to the correct areas both at the same time, then leave on for up to 20 minutes. Or take them off as soon as you see the brassiness has gone. Always apply toners to shampooed, towel dried hair with no conditioner. You will rinse and condition after the toner.

Thanks! X
SaxxVTS 10 months ago
@SaxxVTS The most gentlest and maintainable way of correcting this is to buy a silver shampoo which contains purple tones, and use this to shampoo your hair with, mainly rubbing it into your roots. You can do this once a week or every few washes to help tone the yellow away. You could get them from sallys or a similar supply shop, or if not you could probably get one on ebay. matrix do a nice one called so silver, and clynol do a good one too.
xxaprunexx 10 months ago
the majority of my hair looks 'bleach blonde' and then the roots are a light ginger blonde so I think its lifted enough but just the wrong colour - a sort of orangy blonde. Sorry I don't understand the % lift thing completely, but I know my hairdresser feels like she is using a very high % vol. If she is using an ash blonde should it go goldy orange or is that a sign that she is not using a high enough vol. The colour looks a lot worse the day after being washed. Sorry if Im not being clear!
beckyhidle 11 months ago
@beckyhidle Ok so it's just the tone that needs to be addressed. I would suggest using high lift tint with 40 vol (they're designed to work together). I would say because you get orange, you need to use blue. So I would use 12/89. Always mix 1 part 12/89 with 2 parts 40 vol. You MUST leave this on for a full hour because it spends 40 minutes lifting, and the remaining 20 minutes toning the brassiness to leave a clean blonde. Do this on your roots plus the areas that are ginger
xxaprunexx 11 months ago

Thanks

Thanks! So how does it work to break the base... what do I use? My hair dresser does the bleach foils, washes them out and then applies a product all over, that lifts the virgin roots in between highlights (from a med brown to a med blonde- without any orange) and also tones the highlights. What could that be? Really appreciate your help!
balletbabe103 1 year ago
Hi I have a few questions. 1)I can't buy Toners without a license in my area- is it possible to use a demi-permanent dye? Will that work to take away yellow tones? 2) In your highlights video you suggest using a low vol. developer if you're doing your own hair... if you use a low vol. will it bring it up to a pale enough shade? (I have med brown hair). Also, do you know how to "break the base" when you've done highlights(bring remaining base colour to a lighter but toned level?) Thanks!
balletbabe103 1 year ago
@balletbabe103 1) You could buy a demi yes but it just wont be quite as tailored to your needs, make sure you choose an ash shade though. 2) Yes! Bleach will lift to blonde even with the lowest developer, it is just much gentler and a slower process. This is better because it does not shatter your hair by lifting really fast and aggressively. 3) The best way to do this is apply your foils first and fold them up tight, then apply your base tint around the foils, letting them process together.
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@balletbabe103 Also, if you apply your tint around your foils and the foils are done before the tint, just pull the foils out one by one, and wipe the bleach off those pieces of hair with wet cotton wool and then just wait for your tint to catch up.

Thank you. Just one last question. when i go to touch up my roots as my natural colour is darker what % would i use or would i still use the 4% as you said for taking the brassy colour out. i always thought you use a higher % to lift the colour? :)
123tarz 1 year ago

123tarz 1 year ago
@123tarz this would work for you, just make sure to only apply the 8/0 and your 0/66 (2cm of it) to the brassy areas, then only run it through your whole hair for the last 5 or 10 minutes. if your hair is very highlighted it could grab and go purple otherwise! As for your roots, you did the right thing to choose an ash tone, however, you must choose the right ash tone to cancel out yellow and orange, those would be /8 and /6. So i'd do your roots with 30ml 8/0 +1.5cm of 0/88 + 1.5cm of 0/66 :)
xxaprunexx 1 year ago

SuperHelloKitty85 1 year ago
@SuperHelloKitty85 Hi, what you need to do to correct this is use wella koleston perfect 10/0 with pastel developer (mixing double developer to the tint so it is sloppy) then apply it to the problem area, this will draw out the grey tone. Don't rely on any specific time for the toner to work, You just need to watch the colour change in the mirror, and when it looks neutral then rinse and condition your hair.

and i forgot to tell that her natural hair is like 5 which mean it is hard to lift with 12.89 to the color that we want. So we kinda have to do bleaching process... thanks again
tamerkable 1 year ago
hi, firstly thanks for helping us=) i have some questions about toning blonde hair. I usually dye my cousins hair bu using 40vol. developer to bleach her roots and then 9/8 to tone her hair. But this time i want to try something else for hair and doing it in right way. i bought koleston 12/89, but is it possible to use it after bleaching the hair with a 20vol. developer within 1:1 ratio? i really can't understand the difference between those three 9/8, 10/8 and 12/89 could u please tell?
tamerkable 1 year ago
@tamerkable well the 12/89 can't be used as a toner, as it is specifically designed to lighten. The 10/8, mixed with pastel developer is designed to tone, so would just kill orange. If you are left with Yellow you would tone with 10/16 instead. Level 9 isnt really designed to work as a toner so you wouldnt get such a good result with that as using the level 10. Just make sure you bleach the hair light enough in the first place to be able to tone it. Mix toner as 1:2 so double developer to tint
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
Hi, I wonder what's the difference between shades 9/1 and 9/01? I need to tone down my orange undertones and wonder which one should I use? Thanks!
LemonnSugarr 1 year ago
@LemonnSugarr the difference is 9/1 has 100% ash tone whereas 9/01 is natural with some ash tones. I would personally choose something with blue in which would be 10/8 or 9/8 to do this effectively. The '/1' tones arent designed to neutralise anything in particular, theyre really quite a neutral ash tone.
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx I decided to use KP 9/01 and my hair is now yellowish golden shade :o( I realized now that my roots are more yellowish/golden than orange as I thought before. So probably I'd need to use next time Koleston Perfect with violet base, to neutralize my yellow pigment, right? What shade in level 8 would you recommend? Level 9 turned out to be too light for me. Thanks for any help.
LemonnSugarr 1 year ago
@LemonnSugarr There is no shade in the level 8's with violet tone in so you have to make your own. Buy 8/0 as your base, and also buy the concentrated mix tone 0/66 which is pure violet tone. squirt out the 8/0 - as much as you think you need for your whole head and add into it 2 to 3 centimetres of the 0/66 and NO more. be VERY sparing with this, and make sure you add the correct amount - if you add too much it will take over the mixture and turn your hair too purple. Use with 20 vol developer
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx That's exactly what I wanted to hear :) ! Special violet mix! But please, specify what 2-3 cm from what? Drom top of the newly opened tube? How to measure it correctly? Should it be 1/2 of the teaspoon approx? How do I recognize how much is too much? I will be delighted to use this violet base!! Thanks so much.
LemonnSugarr 1 year ago

PrincezzJadi 1 year ago
@PrincezzJadi Hiya, let me explain why you are getting the brassiness: Because you are so dark naturally, lifting your hair up using a level 8 will not lift far enough as the regular shades only have the ability to lift 2 shades - exposing all the orange that is in your hair. To lift yourself up to a base 8, I would definitly use the 12 series (12/89) with blue tones to kill that brassiness. This will not take you white blonde, it will just take you past the 'brassy' level.
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@PrincezzJadi so... I would use the 12/89 with 40 vol all over your hair for 60 minutes (in order for all the tone to work) remembering to mix double amount of developer with the tint. That should get rid of your problem, and for up-keep i would tone with the 10/8 and VERY low developer. Hope this helps
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna try in a few weeks time because I've only just dyed it with Wella Colour Touch. How much time would you recommend for me to bleach it again because I've just dyed it?

@xxaprunexx Sorry another question, would 30vol not be strong enough to lift to a level 8?? Just don't want to damage my hair too much and think 40vol will leave my ends really dry as I have naturally curly hair.
PrincezzJadi 1 year ago
@PrincezzJadi No, Im afraid it wouldnt. The 40 Vol is designed for use with the 12 series, it wont damage your hair. The only time it would cause damage is if you were using it with bleach. If youre worried about doing this though, you could just start doing your roots with the 12/89 and 40 vol as they grow through each time, and just use the 10/8 toner on the rest of your hair.

Hiya, just wounderd if you could help me
my natural hair coulour is dark golden blonde, i highlighted my hair bleach blonde but i recently stopped getting the highlights done because my hairdresser wouldnt do them to my root and done them too thick (family hairdresser) & i got fed up so i coloured all my hair ash blonde, but my roots have gone slightly orange & the highlights are obviously still there,
not sure what i can do just want lighter blonde hair! can you help me please lol?
thanks x
NicolaJude 1 year ago
@NicolaJude Do your roots with the Koleston Perfect Special Blonde 12/89 and 40 vol peroxide. Apply also across the root area you coloured with the ash blonde, to lift that up too and prevent brassiness. Try to pick out the other bits of hair that arent highlighted as best you can, and colour those with it too but avoid the bleached pieces. Let it process for a full hour (so it tones too), and remember to mix it with 1 part colour and 1 part peroxide. You can buy these from a salon supply store.
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx sorry slightly confused, not sure about where i can buy any of that stuff, also as i have so many highlights its slightly hard to pick them out i can pick some out though. I was just woundering if theres any highstreet colour i can buy that will do the same thing?
Thanks.
NicolaJude 1 year ago

Hope that answers your question
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
Just one question:
I've highlighted my hair (which was originally pretty ginger) and toned it with Wella 10-Ivory Lady, and the highlights have definitely toned but the hair that was originally really ginger colored is still that! But Ivory Lady says "violet-blue", will that not work for my red hair? Does it need to be just a blue base? So confused! Love the video, thank you so much!
mirandarosepetal 1 year ago
@mirandarosepetal Im guessing you mean your natural colour is ginger and youve highlighted it. In which case - The highlighted bits were lightened so they toned well, but natural hair colour or hair too dark isn't tone-able. You would need to use a quasi permenant (colour touch by wella) to neutralise the ginger. Youre best opting for something like the 7/1 (light ash brown) with 4% developer to cover it. Just try to separate the highlights as best you can and not colour those too.
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
ok ive bleached my hair 4 times now from black, i used a stripper first but it didnt seem to do much but after all of that im left with an odd combo of colours, my natural hair colour is quite light so my roots are white and so are some random patches but the most part of my hair is an odd sortov yellowish orange its lighter in areas so im not sure wich toner to use because im not really sure of the colour. it is almost blonde though so please help because the colour is awful lol thank you
kristiekangaroocat 1 year ago
@kristiekangaroocat Unless your hair is very pale and yellowy I would opt for the blue toner (10/8) with very low developer - 10 vol or less really. Only apply the toner to the parts where it is needed, and DO NOT put the toner onto your white roots as it will grab and turn blue very quickly. Apply it to the areas you need and then watch it for up to 20 minutes and rinse about a minute after it looks like the brassinss has gone. make sure the darkest patches are light enough first though

@kristiekangaroocat Ok no problem. Yes I will get those videos done as soon as possible for you :)

hi me again I was just wondering, do you think Blondor is the best bleach, it's £11.85 and I've been using a blue powder bleach verrry cheap, do you think I should use a better one, which do you recommend? xxxx Thanks!!!
hobuspobus 1 year ago
@hobuspobus I personally use INDOLA white bleach powder which when I buy it only costs about £6 for a tub. I find it works just as well as the more expensive bleaches, as it's still professional bleach. It is more important to use a good quality peroxide developer as this is the vital ingredient that helps the bleach do its job
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx Idola? hmm not seen that one, there is one called rapid white about that price. The blue powder I used costs like £2 haha. But it worked great last time, but this time I used a horrible cheap developer so you're right! The one I used was TruZone omg AVOID! Have you tried it, was that the culprit?? it has bleached really unevenly am not sure what to do - the streaks are half orange, does that mean must re bleach the strand? xxxx thanks so much
hobuspobus 1 year ago
@hobuspobus No I haven't tried that so I will stay away from it! Sounds like that was the problem. You need to tone the orange bits with a 10/8 and a very low developer, Don't re-bleach anymore because you will just damage the hair futher. Keep using the correct coloured toners on the bleached bits, get your hair in good condition, and just concentrate on getting the roots the right colour as they grow through - have the highlights as i suggested before etc just on the roots as they grow
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx hi again, thank you so much! I am a tiny bit unsure, but I guess all I need to buy then is 10/8 and use it with my pastel? I was thinking I had to do more streaks using 12% (to make sure it lifts!) with 12/89 but will that be equally as damaging as bleaching again...? I should bleach again but my hair needs to recover, as you say. The developer meant the bleach didnt lift evenly, so worried toning won't help enough. It looks so bland, the streaks aren't showing up well I'm so upset x
hobuspobus 1 year ago
@hobuspobus Yeah your easiest gentlest option is to tone the orange bits with the 10/8 and pastel. The 12/89 is not as damaging as bleach as it is only a tint, and also the 12/ series stop developing when they are ready, so they will not over process. Make sure you mix double developer with your 12/89, and make sure you leave it for a full hour because it lifts in the first 45 minutes and tones in the last 15. I'd just avoid the bleach and see what results you can get without having to use it
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx thanks! I am sorry to be slow, not sure what double developer means? just ratio of peroxide to hair colour I'm guessing... Should I use 9% (30 vol) 6% (20 vol) or get 12 % (40 vol) do you think? Also, do I tone first and then highlight, or put the highlights in first? I am guessing h/l first.. I'd used 7/7 as base shade which is v. warm, want it all to go ashy, was thinking of toning it all, not just streaks. It's not disaster orange, it's just all a bit too warm, thx for help! xx
hobuspobus 1 year ago
@hobuspobus yes i mean 1 part 12/89 and 2 parts 12% (40 vol). Do your highlights first. It will be more difficult to tone 7/7 without using something like a 7/1 and 20 vol to cover as best you can. If you apply your 10/8 toner (also double developer) all over it will only take on the highlights, and just rinse it off when it looks ashy enough for you.
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx Thanks again, I am about to do it now. I forgot to buy 40 vol so am going to use 30 vol I bet it won't work what do you suggest? Am off to do it now though so unless you happen to be on, looks like I will just wing it. Hope it works. I am going to then apply 10/8 to tone and hope it makes it all look overall more ash. Thanks!!! xxxxxx will let you know if it works maybe send you a pic haha
hobuspobus 1 year ago
@hobuspobus Oh I see. It all sounds good but if you dont use 40 vol you will not get the lift and it could be a bit brassy thats all. Let me know how you get on
xxaprunexx 1 year ago

I am thinking of highlighting AGAIN as the colour went uneven, oh dear :(
thank you so much again so helpful xxx
hobuspobus 1 year ago
@hobuspobus I would start by buying a re-constructing treatment conditioner and using it once a week sleeping with it in your hair and rinsing in the morning. This will repair the damage over time. I would also use a blow-drying spray for shine and to protect the hair. The best solution is to do some highlights with bleach and some with 12/89 but DO NOT overlap the bleach onto any previous highlights, only ever do the roots. This way you can have nice golden blonde alongside the very light blond
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx oh 12/89 better than just bleaching it and toning it with 10/16? also it is all coloured now so damage pro all over :( The highlights haven't lifted evenly am not very happy want to fix it, which way is best, will go to the shop tomorrow xxxxx thank you again, omg wish I found this vid this morning aargh haha xxxx

hi, i have natural strawberry blonde hair & i want it to be a bit more of a natural-looking blonde. i thot that mayb using a toner on it wud take away any orange/ginger tones in my hair. do u think this wud work & how wud u recomend i do it?
aibhlinneeson 1 year ago
@aibhlinneeson Because your colour is natural, you will need something a little bit stronger than a toner, so I recommend using a demi-permenant colour which is also very gentle on your hair. The tones in your hair will be gold + red, which together make orange. So you would need to use a blue tone to neutralise it. I would choose an 8/81 (level 8 blonde with blue and ash) in 'Colour touch' by Wella. You can buy this at Sallys or from the internet. Mix 1 part colour with 2 parts of 4% developer
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
@xxaprunexx ok im goin to look up that product now, i live in ireland but hopefully i can get it, thanks so much :)

Peach199028 1 year ago
Apply your toner to shampooed towel dried hair, with no conditioner applied. Also, make sure that you avoid your freshly bleached roots at all cost! I guess by you saying white beige that you are wanting a touch of very light warmth and gold into your hair. I think you could actually use an ash toner and a gold toner and alternate these between random strands of your hair. By that I mean just pick out random pieces and apply the gold toner and on the other bits your ash. (10/03 gold) (10/16 ash)
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
What if your hair is kind of both (yellow AND orange)? Mine seems to have a dark urine-ish color. Lol. It's really quite ugly. And this is after I went to a salon and spent $110 trying to get the orangish brassy color out. It looks better, but not by much. And it's so much darker than I would like. Any advice?
BrittanyER86 1 year ago

8barnowl 1 year ago
for lifting un-coloured hair of a level 6 or above, I'd recommend using the high lift tint range from wella Koleston. It can lift up to 4 shades which will take you past the area of warmth you're getting using the 8.1. if you're exposing a lot of copper try the 12/89 or 12/81 for a cool blonde. the 8.1 will only lift 2 shades maximum, that's why you're getting brassy results. Hope this helps
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
Thats brilliant thank you, that makes complete sense. I'll certainly give it a try and let you know the results.
8barnowl 1 year ago
Great! I dont know if you've used the high lift tints before, but you use double developer (1:2) and also you must leave it for the full hour (or 30 under heat) because it only adds the tone in the last 10 minutes. Let me know how it goes
xxaprunexx 1 year ago
Yes have used Loreals Mjiblond but not Koleston so I imagine its the same principle. I tried to avoid using the hi lift to preserve the condition but quite honestly I cant tell any difference and the colour is all wrong so I havent gained anything. Would you say the Koleston is better than the Loreal ? Thank you so much for all your advice its much appreciated!

So i'm trying to get to a cooler dark ash blond from here...Could you give me some advice as to which toner/developer I should use?
thank you so much!
Kyirsty 2 years ago
Yeah a picture would be helpful for me to help recommend a specific shade. However orange hair definitly needs a blue toner. As long as the hair is evenly bleached to orange all over I suggest either using Wella 'Colour Touch' 9/01 with 4% (13vol) developer for something more permenant, or to tone with blue, wella koleston perfect 10/8 with 3% 10 vol
xxaprunexx 2 years ago
ok! so, i bleached my hair twice last year, and then it was so..brassy, that i just dyed it back to brown (and oh joy, the colour fades with every wash:S) anyways, what toner could i use on my brown hair?its like...light brown right now. would the manic panic virgin white toner work there...or...should I use something else?:S
also, is toner healthy for your hair?
partyandahalf 2 years ago
I'm guessing you just want to stop the brown from fading, rather than get rid of brassiness. The best option for that is to use a demi (or quasi) permenant. These are used widely for toning, and they can also keep your colour refreshed. Colour touch (Wella) is a great brand. I suggest when you do your roots brown, apply the demi permenant on the rest of your hair like a toner, then rinse the whole lot. If you ask at a beauty supply they will help you choose a shade+ you only need 7vol developer
