The reality of the Macross situation, rights-wise, is that the dispute is actually between JAPANESE companies... The footage in Robotech was licensed to HG by Tatsunok, producer of much of the animation in the original Macross as well as Mospeada (aka "New Generation") and Southern Cross (aka "Robotech Masters").
Businesses exist to make money not please anal-retentive fans who don't know the full story....
In Japan, a virtual legal hell exists with some of the bigger anime properties like Gundam and Macross. Multiple companies own pieces of those shows and it can be a huge headache to negotiate contracts between all those companies for releases. We see this happen in the US with many home video releases of movies substituting music because the record companies who own the original music tracks want too much license money. Same thing prevented a few releases like Macross 7
... in the US. The Japanese record companies helped kill chances for an international release of Macross 7 which had already been judged to be a "weird show" by international fans when it was brand-new.

Fucking awesome! They should make a Macross Live Action movie, even if the special effects are just this quality, I'd rather have it look oldschool like this than some shitty Michael Bay-style complete redesign of the VFs like they did with Transformers.
