Not played this vid for some time, how remiss.....It is a stunning Blue Nile tune, encompassing everything that is magical about the band and ranks up there amongst the very, very best that Paul Buchanan has written. It definitely sounds like 'Hats' era Blue Nile, which was just about their pinnacle, for me. Another reminder of how spellbinding a seeing them play live was......
For all you BN fans I have noticed that there is a new album ad fo them in amazon.uk.
This song breaks my heart. saw them live in Belfast in 07 with my wife. They did'nt play it then, but what a night. I am not afraid to say I bawled like a little girl.
Truly my favourite band and the best singer I have ever heard.

Top notch - saw him in London in 2006/7 I think it was - they played this, a memorable highlight out of about 15 of them. I still have a signed photo and a letter from his father, thanking me for some fanzine coverage in 1985 - I mean, how can you not like a set-up like that?
Yes, this MUST be released on CD soon! I just can't get enough of this song. As the description says, "An instant classic." Thanks SO much for posting this recording!!
I am so desperate to hear this song that I am contemplating reforming my band just to cover it, although I would much prefer if the guys just got together and recorded it for all is folk sitting hear in anticipation.
I bumped into Paul Buchanan very recently in Glasgow and I asked him when we could expect to see another album and he said there will be something at some point.. If I hadn't bid him farewell I would still be standing talking to him just now as I found him to be an absolute gentleman. Paul Buchanan in person lives up to the billing of a very decent person indeed and enhanced totally my respect for him as a musical genius.
HI nial , griffmo here in Glasgow just to let you know i still cant figure out how to down this classic to my ipod ,i play your recording once a week to keep me sane until the next gig , we should start a petition

@niallredmond Excellent posting Niall. They also played 'Meanwhile' at their Glasgow concert in 2006 and, like you, it struck me as an instant classic and one of the best things they'd written since Hats.
Paul looks so relaxed at this Dublin concert and his patter was also on top form in Glasgow that night. At one point he was struggling with his guitar and remarked that "I can't even work it". Quick as a flash someone from the audience shouted "Maybe you should try playing it more often!"

Staggeringly beautiful - made me bawl my sappy eyes out. Surely this is destined for a movie soundtrack somewhere - just as you leave - and the end credits are rolling up - it stops you right in your tracks...
thanks for all the comments guys and gals.i was so lucky to catch this song on my camera that night as i only shot one or two of the songs.given the amount of hits on this video and indeed all your approving comments we got to get the word to TBN and sanctuary records that fans love this song and desire greatly to hear it on a studio album...i am delighted everyone got to hear this i will never forget being there for it,it made me feel like when i heard The Downtown Lights for the first time...
@niallredmond Still listening, mate. Many, many miles of water under the bridge since that night. Still eclipsing most everything out there. A fifth album? Can't see it, alas. Hope I'm wrong.
I love the Blue Nile and I also want to echo those who have thanked you for posting this-- if we can't have it on a new cd, at least we can come here to hear it. It is probably my favorite Blue Nile song ever... I've been a fan since Hats came out and hope to one day see them live. Being that I live in the US, that's not as likely! Someday though...
Bur when, oh when, oh when will we have a new record. This is the painful thing about being a TBN fan - 6 years between records because of Paul Buchanan's slightly OCD approach to making music. Sometimes I want to cry.
well , if you like music that tugs at the heat strings without the over commerciality of mass produced dross .. then you will feel safe in the hands of these guys .. the Blue Nile are quite simply awsum !
I agree-- this song is Blue Nile perfection. I am so glad it's on here, as otherwise I couldn't come back to hear it again and again. Thank you-- here's hoping there's a new offering from them soon.
In March 1991 my 7 year old daughter died. On the way back home from the hospital I played a Blue Nile album; she'd had such a struggle and such pain and I'd lost my reason for being. Somehow, somehow listening to this band allowed me to make sense of her loss and to continue.
I'm very sorry :( ... I already posted a comment saying that their music is very soothing. May God the almighty let her play joyfully in paradise ..amin
All I can say about this song is that it is simply sublime and has an instancy that even Paul Buchanan has seldom achieved (usually takes 3-4 plays before his songs are in your head for ever- exception "Family Life"). PB has this way of getting deep inside you and before you know it you are in some of helpless euphoric emotional sauna! Imagine if he got a chance to sing this on some peak time TV show....................?
Thanks goodness Niall recorded this, it is the only version I have found of this beautiful song. If Paul released it and it was played a few times on the radio, and there was any justice in the world it would become an instant number 1.
It is quite simply a perfect pop song; and a perfectly simple song which is instantly likeable, but at the same time has tremendous depth and resonance.
This could very well be a single or album track. That's the thing about The Blue Nile. EVERY track on their records are worthy of the " single " tag. Just depends what mood you are in. If this is the standard for the new album, it's going to be yet another amazing record. Every B.N release has been a " moment " in my life, and some songs still remain the soundtrack of my life. I always play " From a Late Night Train " before I go on stage. Paul could sing the phone book and make it believable.
clicked on this just to hear it again, oh i wish PB would hurry up and release a cd. yes I agree, a great classic BN song. Meanwhile... we are waiting (again) yeah yeah yeah
All of the new songs I've heard were fantastic, there is something in these songs, something I can't describe..I'm waiting for their new album like I've been waiting for my one and only love..
no mate this is the only known version around..lucky I got it on the camera that night...Please God they'll release it someday..maybe if Paul reads the comments on his great song he'll make sure of it!!!
This is stunning but I can't find it anywhere else, I've been a fan since the early days so I know they don't rush anything. Does anyone know if it's possible to buy this anywhere (shops, the web etc).
Thanks for sharing this one Niall. They didn't play it in Glasgow this week ... Runaround Girl was the only "new" song and that was played 2 years ago. That's the Blue Nile way of doing things I suppose.
Enough already...come on Blue Nile, get this one out at least as a single. Poignant and aching,it reminds me of the way the world seems to have lost it's way and left humanity crying its heart out...waiting for angels.
every time I watch this i think its more and more sublime as a track - i so hope they play it as Glasgow in July as I cant wait to see them.....come on Paul, lets have a new album PLEASE...>!
Wonderful song, wonderful lyics, thanks for that. Had to watch it a few times, it was mesmirising! Love The Blue Nile, Love Paul. One of the best songwriters to come out of Scotland. Big fan.
Can't post them as one post so I'll do it as a reply to the first part..
This song encompasses everything i love about the Blue Nile and Pauls writing talent. Both incredible words and throbbing bass with strings and the chorus hook is outstanding.
Even when I saw this live as it happened it took my breath away as it did all around me.
The emotion in it is tangible and somewhat ordinary and makes me relate to it on alot of levels...the beauty of Buchanans writing lies in that dynamic.
Bridge I Was Telling You Lies, Leading You On,Working It Out. You,Head In The Clouds,Close To The Ground, Where Are You Now? V2 Meanwhile Everythings Changing, Moving and Shaking, Lost In A Million Pieces,I'm, Happy To Be There, Want To See You There,Catching A Ride To Save Me
V3 Meanwhile Go Where You Wanna, Tell Me You Gotta, Get On A Bus To Somewhere Else, I,See No One On The Subway, And Angels On The Runway, Giving Me All Directions. Bridge And I Was Telling You Lies, Leading You On,And Working It Out. You,Close To The Ground,Head In The Clouds, Where Are You Now?
was in New York last week and the "I See No One On The Subway,And Angels On The Runway" lyric took on a life of it's own...PLEASE PAUL release this track it is classic Blue Nile on a level of Downtown Lights and Tinseltown greatness!!!!
Why did they cancel their US tour??!! Never been more disappointed in my entire life...had tickets the day they went on sale and have been waiting 10 years for them to come over here...until they do arrive, I will depend on niallredmond for the new, live material...thanks for this...awesome stuff
I spent the 1980's being way too serious, playing with a baroque ochestra and the only pop music I ever heard was Steely Dan, believe it or not! I can't belive what I missed. Once you hear a Blue Nile song it rolls around your heart and mind for weeks and weeks- like some strange obsession! I am coming to the UK for the first time in Sept. of '08, where can I hear these guys? Does anyone know? I can't find any performance info. online. Many thanks to Niall for posting this heartbreaking song.
Does it get any better than Blue Nile? Songs that touch the heart. It's strange that it impacts a whole range of people from street sweepers to professors - if you feel it then you totally get it. It's a feeling, difficult to put into words.
What a voice! He sings from his soul deep inside and that comes out when you see him. I saw him last year in Edinburgh, went back stage and told him I appreciated all his music. He came ovcr and just gave me a big hug. What a guy!
Doubt it will until a new album comes out but TBN are touring at the moment so it may be a sign of an album to come soon but based on their output schedule I wouldn't hold out hope of it being anytime soon
utterly sublime - TBN at their very best - its great to hear a new song, but instantly I know the song so well - go figure (mind you, he did play in in Edinburgh last year...but this is only the second hearing, but its a classic already!)I simply cannot wait for Manchester next weekend.
not sure whether to love or hate them, after canceling the US tour recently. and now they play all these new tunes on another continent without releasing them?? Oh blue nile, how you wound us....
Their best song since the great collection that is "Hats". Cannot wait for it to be released, there again, history suggests I should not hold my breath! Wonderful
I won't hold my breath either! it's a wonderful song, I thought it would take them another eight years to release a new album....gosh, I'm counting off the days! cheers
I'm slowly but surely getting right pissed off with TBN , why oh why are we being bubjected to extraordinary periods between releases ? I can't stand the anticipation anymore ..it's driving me potty listening to stuff like this knowing that it might be years from now that i get to hear new material .

When we saw them in Glasgow at the end of one of the songs a punter shouted 'You better make this a weekly thing !'

What a guy!

fabulous song. when will it be released?
Annie1962 4 years ago
Doubt it will until a new album comes out but TBN are touring at the moment so it may be a sign of an album to come soon but based on their output schedule I wouldn't hold out hope of it being anytime soon

utterly sublime - TBN at their very best - its great to hear a new song, but instantly I know the song so well - go figure (mind you, he did play in in Edinburgh last year...but this is only the second hearing, but its a classic already!)I simply cannot wait for Manchester next weekend.

Another beautiful song from the most under appreciated band on earth.
Britney Spears sells millions while The Blue Nile is relatively unknown.
Go figure.
gorillapancake 5 years ago
well, britney sells vulgarity, the blue nile sell quality. The song is absolutely wonderful. I'm looking forward to listening their new songs.
frompixieland 5 years ago
In a way, it better like that...Besides, I don't think Paul is concerned about Britney' sales :-)
