Your physics teacher is correct :) Nothing heavier than iron can be made by the crushing gravity the star generates alone. It is only when it explodes can it continue to make the heavier elements.

The core goes higher then iron for sure, read some phisics man.
Iron requires more energy to fuse than it creates, BUT this doesnt matter, because the presure is still huge enough for the fussion.
If there were no heavier matter than the iron in the cores of supernovas, there wouldnt be any heavier matter than iron in the whole universe
