I took a class for this in junior high. they start you off with a coffee can with all the type mixed up in it and you have to distribute it all correctly into the wooden boxes!

This makes me appreciate page layout software like Adobe InDesign or Quark Xpress. This was definitely a skill as well as an art!

I have to agree - I can't believe they used to make newspapers like that - can you imagine.

Newspapers were set on Intertype or Linotype machines. Hand setting was used by the jobbing printers for business cards, letterheads, invoices etc.
