Study areas all over campus! Everything need, nice place to study, quiet, coffee, printers, Wi-Fi, etc. Studies always first (certain majors very rigorous) but should enjoy self too, only young once you know. Everyone too busy with jobs/studying, so not much time. Most schools downtown when get time off really fun (work hard/play hard). UIC's tough especially the competitive majors. But environment for making yourself, life long character building/learning experience
UIC's an amazing school and once in lifetime experience since it's downtown (something for everyone! Lots of internships too). But yes honestly it's true living at UIC cheaper/more fun if rent a place with group of friends off campus after first year. Convenient for inviting study groups, and of course to throw parties haha. Chicago's such a great city, many concerts/clubs (and can also make friends at many other great universities! UIC/DePaul/Loyola always going to each other's parties haha)
People throwing parties in the dorms is what motivated me to never live in the dorms again. People need a quiet learning environment in order to study. As a person who came into the UIC dorms at age 23 for the first time, I seriously wanted to murder a lot of the stupid kids that were there. There are a lot of naive, ignorant, stuck-up people in the dorms.
UIC has amazing Medical and Engineering programs, is a very diverse and big school with many great programs, however with any such university have to have initiative/responsibility/dedication, can play hard but also must work hard too (else drop out)! Have to make study groups to work together, and professors are very knowledgeable/friendly/helpful if take the time to study and see them (they're never too busy for a student!)
wait so these commons west and all are on on east????...what's wrong with east campus?? and how is the experience that different when u live off campus...just wann aknow
I currently go to uic and i would say stay away from east campus it is nasty!! if you need to live somewhere i would say live on west and south campus the dorms are so much nicer!! if you are a freshman looking to live at a uic dorm live in a cluster or traditional dorm you get to know more people
Gee, I wonder who put together this video. My experience with UIC housing was a bad one. Many repair and rodent issues that the UIC Housing managers would not address. rooms were overbooked. On and off campus safety was also an issue. I graduated from this school and I have few complaints about the teaching staff. However, all things considered, if I had to do it again I would not attend this school. I understand that the state universities get much better reviews from students, ie ISU ..
Communal living sucks and is disturbing. Fondest memory of east campus? People puking in the bathrooms. Ew. I didn't want to see people be bulimics. It was disturbing. Don't subject yourself to the psychological horrors that are around East campus. I will say that I loved watching young women come right out of the shower. It totally enhanced my sex drive. I didn't think I had one until I lived in East campus.
Commuting is not such a hassle, since about all classes end around 5:50 p.m.. You'll get use to the El and CTA real quick. The ctatracker website and CTA transit websites help loads. Apartment hunting? Mmm.. The sophists on the UIC apartment website might want to load their entire 3-person contract on you. Watch out for that. You might have to hunt up north or south Chicago for an apartment or near. Refuse to live in East campus. You'll thank me. If you can't, only go to your dorm to sleep.
I lived on campus for three years. Two years at CommonNorth and one at TBH. In TBH they treat you like a little kid. You might as well get an apartment for the money you're paying to live there. East Campus sucks, especially with all those damn I.D. checks. Dealing with the Security Guards at night is fucking a nuisance.
Generally, you'll see a bunch of alcohol bottles stack in a place, such as Commons West. Guess what? Like almost none of those students are 21? What the heck? Apparently, UIC tolerates underage drinking. The RAs don't seem to target those who are doing it. What irks me is that the CW residents don't have the nerve to recycle those bottles. They'll just stack them on top of the garbage bin. They could throw them in the trash chute. Nope, they are immature children who like leaving messes.
Want proof about the meal plan? Go to the uic dining website. Also, they say there is a grill, but the fact is for east side there will often be about 10 people in front of you. Every time you want a piece of meat, it will probably be some piece of soy mixed with beef. It takes about 15 minutes to get that hamburger patty. UIC workers rush to clean the dorms and make them look nice again before every open house. If you're mature enough to raise kids, you could handle living in an apartment.
Let me explain. If you're on east campus, you will get a meal plan that involves feeding your high-carb food that is cheap and will make you fat: pasta, rice, etc.. East campus has a lot of immature people: Smart kids that didn't get beat by their parents. It gets really hedonistic and annoying. The kids lack respect for others. The Chicago apartments are indeed abundant and somewhat affordable. Start your hunt early. Do not live on campus if you can avoid it. But find good roommates.
There is little to no decent place to stay. Your best bet is an apartment in the city with mature individuals who won't tolerate B.S.. If you're an immature little kid who smokes pot and plays loud music at 18 or older, then you need to be killed. It's as simple as that.
i graduated 2005. happened to stumble on this vid when i typed in UIC. The south campus dorms are really nice lived there for 2 years when they were brand new. A lot of cool shops and restaurants. But its pricey. Still compared to my friends dorms at UIUC and other IL schools there is no comparison. Think of UIC as dorms as mansions and 5 star hotels and others as roach motel -_-
Oh and how do you guys like it there. And is there is anybody out there who has been to SIU and UIC. Can they tell me how it was going from school to school, and they like it. Plz someone help. It is SO appreciated.
This message is probably coming too late but I've been to UIC for 5 years now. If you - or anyone else for that matter - want to know about my experience then feel free to message me.
The above message should read "...I've been AT UIC for 5 years..."
Anyway, I'm a mechanical engineering student at UIC and my experience with UIC has been really negative. Many of my professors were uncaring and a lot of them don't know how to teach well. Things are only going to get worse because the state is withholding a long overdue payment of $400M from the university. UIC doesn't even have the money to fix the facade on it's deteriorating landmark, University Hall.
Hey needed help. I'm at Southern Illinois University right now, but I'm going to transfer to UIC. I'm a freshman now, but I'll be a sophmore over there next year. Where's a good place to stay for me?
umm I go to UIC and why is there a guy with a British accent? lol and dorming is not that great, you are better off renting an apt around there, some may even be covered by fin aid.
nothing ever gives a good shot of the rooms!!! i'm gonna be living in a cluster, and i'm not sure how big the rooms are. i need to know what i can fit in there... are they a decent size?
On the housing tour they told us that the smallest rooms were for one person only. The Housing Dep't. overbooked so I was put in a single occupant room with another person. We literally had to turn sideways when we passed each other in the room, and neither of us was overweight. It was like living in a closet.
hey...i was born outside the US...but why is it I dont have a Latino accent like that Arroyo chick got...always wondered why some Latinos sound foriegn when they where born in US...is she foreign??...???Love UIC...miss it...got laid there a lot...Polish chicks love Latinos

Based on the stuff I've heard I'm kinda glad I live close enough to Chicago that I don't have to stay in the dorms :P

jut out of curiosity, if there is water leak and hole in the ceiling and couldn't sleep in the room for 5 days straight. Can I have my money back? :)

i say DePaul, North Park, or Northeastern Illinois University might be a little better, UIC neighborhood is kinda iffy.

this is a sales video. it does not paint an accurate picture. I lived at the dorm and had to move out. It was not fit for living in.
