  • I love how its towing a modern day diesel locomotive.

  • @tavis5500 In the UK Diesels have to be hooked up to steam loco hauled trains because the coach heating runs on electricity and Steam locos can't give them the power needed. So a Diesel is coupled to the tail and left in idle to generate it. I don't know if its the same in the US though.

  • @AshHill07 Interesting if I say the least.

  • FAST!!!

  • I remember #4449 passing by my high school on the way to film the movie Tough Guys

  • This thing was my idol as a kid, right above UP3985...

  • why do they all have secondary engines behind them, can they not drive under their own power?

  • @tavis5500 I'd guess it's perhaps safety regulations? If "our" German-built 011075 crosses the border with Germany, it may do so on its own command, but it's the only steam engine in Holland that may do so. Every other border-crossing steam-engine must have a backup. Perhaps in the States they are even stricter (please correct me, I want to know too!). For a small vid of that 01, click on my name, BTW.

  • Steam power is best no mather what the OIL company say

  • Lol its getting pushed ?!

  • wow she is pulling a mondern day amtrack locomotive

  • Beautiful train!

  • Shes a Beauty....

  • How do they see what's in front of the engine when cabin is at the back?

  • what kind of camera?

  • Super view angle! ★★★★★

  • What kind of fuel does this thing burn? It doesn't seem to be spewing out the the huge black cloud of something fired by coal.

  • Beautiful...

    .

  • faast

  • Skip, this is a tremendous video. Really gives you an idea of how hard those old locomotives can work. That thing is flat - out hauling the mail.

  • But a beautiful engine and a great vid.

  • I think in your info you really ought to replace the world with the US. I know some of you don't think there is a world outside the US apart from England and Afghanistan but it does irk a little many would say the Flying Scotsman is the world's 'most' famous locomotive; the only engine i can think of to have done a world tour! Also there are are three operating A4's in the UK which are properly streamlined.

  • @drk2aps OK, replace the world with the UK, are you happy now ? Why would 300 millions US citizens give a f... damn of 60 millions Britons ? You were a world power back in the 19th century, you're not any longer, get over it dude, nobody cares about your operating A4's, or whatever. This is a video about a Southern Pacific Railroad steam locomotive, get the picture ?

  • Klasse Lok

wie schnell kann die fahren ?

  • Awesome video. I think it's cool seeing how this locomotive is pulling one of Amtrak's GE P40 Diesel Electric locomotives. It's like we are seeing the past and present of passenger trains.

  • shamenit wasnt running 'alone'

  • very nice

  • Very cool to see these old timers run!

  • Most beautiful train ever. How fast was it going during the video?

  • @Milinthrak As i recall around 60-65 mph through here just east of Havre, Montana

  • THE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUL TRAIN!!!

  • Anyone else notice the door on the amtrak engine is open?

  • @CuseRecorder yeah .i was like " what the hell its gonna be cold in there ....yet they make steamers go thru safety test when there engineers leave the door wide open for someone to go "oops " wam! into the ballast !

  • why does every steam have a deasil behind it

  • @BSBINC1 for dynamic braking and for insurance purpposes ... kinda ruins the effect tho doesnt it ?

  • @southern4501isawesom: Not really if it's the only way you get to see this thing run. I haven't done that in 30 years now. These newer Amtrak engine are less obtrusive than those used in Dec. '75 or '81 when I chased it.

  • @BSBINC1 what'sa deasil?

  • @BSBINC1 sorry the train that carry oil lets say that lol

  • I've heard the modern locomotive is just for dynamic braking, is that true?

  • wow. i didnt know they still used steam for powering a locomotive.

  • I'm double rainbowing right now watching this magnificent masterpiece of awesome train footage. Mindblown. You should get the Pulitzer for awesome train videos. :)

  • amazing footage Thanks for the video, It gave me goose bumps watching her fly!

  • That is a nice stretch of parallel highway to pace & photograph trains from!

  • that thing is beauty on wheels!!

  • Doesn't look like she's doing much work; lots of steam, no smoke. Is that a set of Amtrak diesels pushing her?

  • @CSXCP55 Nah, the Amtrak unit is there for it's dynamic breaking. Most steam excursion trains will have a diesel or two behind the steamer for that purpose. And it may not look like she's doing much work because it's on a flat grade and passenger trains aren't much of a load for a big steamer.

  • Wow...... big picture and nice locomotive. Greetings.

  • How are you in the right place at the right time all the time? I only see diesels. bleh.

  • I remember this one pulled into Minneapolis in '76 down on the old Milwaukee Road tracks on the southside......same place the circus trains used to back in and unload.

    Beautiful sight!

  • that train IS NOT going slow

  • That is really something.

  • Howdy All!

Try playing some German Techno dance music from Shoutcast while viewing this vid. Seems to make a really good sound track for this subject.

  • wow coooool :-)

  • 92 mph!!!

  • Absolutely gorgeous, def 1 of my all time favorites. I have the MTH version of it and i run it all the time

  • She looks so pretty in the sun. The video looks great on my andriod phone.

  • the smoke looks fake actually....but I can be wrong...how fast were you going?

  • @FlAtLine8NL224 How does it look fake?!

  • I've seen almost all of your videos, and they are fantastic. Great talent!!!!

  • I saw a video with Big Boys and this announcer was saying that one of the videographers is "one of the best rail videographers". Or something like that. I though to myself: That guy doesn't even compare to Skip Weythman".

  • Great video, Thanks

  • I'm not much of a train buff but this bad ass old train did get my attention, can anyone tell me anything about it... Appears to be a wood burner but I don't know, Please fill me in. Ralan

  • Just google SP4449, there is enough info to choke a horse & its an oil burner with 80" drivers, and is the last running example of a streamlined steam locomotive

  • in the us

  • @SkipW no it isnt - there are 3 A4s running in britain

  • a4 and the bulleid Southern pacific "spam cans" are the UK steam streamliners" to be honest, i preffer the bulleid's to the A4's, though 4449 is a beast in her own right

  • @SkipW ...in the US. There are several streamlined steam locos still running in Britain.

  • @rguyer1 Power type Steam Builder Lima Locomotive Works Serial number 7817 Build date May 1941 Configuration 4-8-4 Gauge 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) Weight on drivers 275,700 lb (125,100 kg) Weight 475,000 lb (215,000 kg) Fuel type Bunker Oil Cylinder size 25.5 in (650 mm) dia × 32 in (810 mm) stroke Tractive effort 64,800 lbf (288,000 N), 78,000 lbf (350,000 N) with booster
  • @noslack1964 These locomotives are under-appreciated, this was as big as the internet is today, taking only days to travel instead of months!!! noslack1964, How do you know so much about these trains...

  • @rguyer1 With what speed is she goin?))

  • Great pacing! Thanks -

  • That's her original colors she wore back in the 40s, the Freedom train colors were just for an event,

  • Is this the same engine that was the spirit of 76, think it was painted red white and blue back then?

  • same loco, new paint in yhe classic original colors

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent video, Skip! Great pacing action and she looks beautiful in that early morning sunlight down in there!

  • For Steam RR Fans Worldwide This has to be seen.

  • You really have a lot of videos of this locomotive traveling across the west. I really like this one for the ringing sound of those drivers on the rail. All big locos make that harmonious ring, and it is nice to hear it loud and clear on this one! Good job, Skip.
