This brings back a ton of memories for me because I listened to a lot of .38 special way back in the 80's and even saw them in concert once in albany, georgia when their "strength in numbers" album came out back then.
one hell of a musician, song writer of course, but a genius at composing guitar leads! god i miss the live acts of the late 70's and 80's,I would do anything to re-live those years! I miss em I miss em I miss em! But me and my band re-create it everytime we play,it keeps me sane!
Relic of a song! Too funny. I was in high school when it came out and it still is one of my favorites. The guitar riff at the beginning is particuarly good.
I met him at camp jam... he and a makeshift band played this song, Mississippi Queen, and others. He had, I think, a '59 Les Paul goldtop with a '61 neck and an original PAF.
Holy cow, I thought that I was the only obscure music afficianado to appreciate this relic of a song...turns out, there is a whole world of peeps, like me out there. I am a recording artist, myself...you can access my official artist website via my YouTube channel. Thanks, definetely give me any and all feedbacks!
I have always been a skynyrd, .38 Special fan for all these years, of coarse Jeff Carlisi`s solo is not going to sound perfect as i`m sure he doesn`t play Hold On Loosely everyday also he don`t usually play it on a Gibson ES-335 instead of his Explorer.
the guitaring in this song may not be defined in todays world as "amazing" but its still extremely creative and jus sounds soo catchy ane soo much emotion is put into it
I always thought that pound for pound Carlisi was about the best lead guitarists of his era. Really melodic. It didn't hurt either that when asked in an interview what band was doing it for him at that time he responded, "The Cars" which I thought was pretty left field and pretty cool.
Hey Johnny, BTW another guy like this that wasn't overly celebrated but was a really great force was Michelle Shock and Dwight Yokum (sp?) guitarist / producer, Pete Anderson.
Seen 38 special this past weekend at the Woodlands Pavillion. 38 special was awsome. But I have to say the kid on lead guitar will never be mistaken for Jeff.
My mistake, sorry. I'm from and live in Jacksonville and I guess that his having lived in Israel at one time started that rumor. He is a great guy though. I know that from many interactions with him.
Check out Jeff's work with Barnes on the tracks "Robin Hood" and "Honky Tonk Night Time Dancer"... it is great stuff indeed. "They" had a posting of "Robin Hood" played live at "Red Rocks" but it was yanked in favor of censorship.
Hell yeah!! That guy truly rocks! I saw JC at an outdoor concert at Hart Plaza in the Downtown Hodown in Detroit..1986! He stood just inches over a gate playing his Gibby Explorer and just kept a walin', great player! Great feelin for the axe!
Gibby Explorer, he plays a Rhyne custom Explorer. Made just for him...I thought it was a Gibson until I saw an interview with him talking about his guitar. I have been to many shows and always thought it was a Gibson too.
i waz there thats at murphys music that shit waz awesome and he is the nicest guy youll ever meet i shook hands with him and he gave me alot of tips about startin a band and all that u rock Jeff!!
I'm at the camp up in cleveland now and he's supposed to be up here on thursday. one of the 'bands' i'm in for the camp is covering 'hold on loosely' so now i'm scrambling to memorize the solo before then. fun stuffs, but not all that easy.
Thanks for thi info; I'll have to check it out. I've been playing drums since age 6, so around 11 years now, and I'd love to play with some of these rock legends!
He started Camp Jam in Atlanta (Atlanta was the first location) 4 years ago and I've gotten to be good friends with him over the years. He is a great guitarist and a great person!
good job jeff, ive seen you a couple times up close and personal at a couple shows in greenville sc my husband worked the load in and the out. So.... i had good stage touching positions. YOU STILL GOT IT BABE.
I love this solo and ALL the 38 solos they got that special sound like skynyrd the sound of those hit songs are incredible the guitar work and vocals and everything just is perfect ! great video kool! why aint he still jamming in 38?
Did he play slide guitar on four walls of raiford by lynyrd skynyrd too?
Jeff has a wonderful melodic style

In your description, what do you mean by "he still plays great"? Was he supposed to have forgotten how to play?

Does anyone know whether Carlisi uses the Travis Style Picking technique in most of his riffs if at all?
Webdragon220 10 months ago
And people thought Sothern Rock and Roll was easy to play....
