Nice sound. Check my short HiFi Ltd videos that show the sounds coming from a close cousing of the Vox AC15. Handwired in 60s with a simple mod I use the 6br7 (similar to EF86 pentode) channel or the triode channel ECC83. Also check the Pure Tone page in Facebook for more info and pics.
Great demos on all the VOX handwired series. What are the differences between the Heritage amps and these? Also, I love the VOX soiund, but can these amps be used for heavier music with the right effects (e.g. Tool, Metallica, Sound Garden)? They sound as though with the right tweeks they could pull off almost anything. Also, what is the difference between an EL34 and an EL84? I appreciate your input.
@pkava1079 The difference between this and the Heritage is that these have a bypassable master volume whereas the Heritage only has a master tone cut (but they have pentode/triode switches and whatnot). Also with decent pedals, the Vox will do good with heavier rock, almost as good as a Fender. Lastly, an EL34 is basically a "British" 6L6 in warm mid based tone and slightly easier to overdrive, whereas EL84s are super small tubes that can be considered jangly compared to the 6L6
Hey guys, does the 30 sound a lot different than the 15? I really want the 15 for it's size, but I'm starting to question that. This demo of the 30 sounds even better than the demo of the 15, which still sounds awesome.
Compared to the Vox Heritage demos, these kind of suck and seem rushed. You didn't go into detail with the features or switch up the volume and gain like you did on the Heritage series.
Damn, at about 1:50 Andy says this amp would be good for a 'late night jam' but I want it to sound good during the day. I guess I'll look for something else.
@alanproaudio Ha ha. Rest assured, Vox Ac30 amps sound fantastic day and night. Even the newer Korg built models are far superior to most amps made these days. Even I can't find anything to complain about and I'm pretty anal about tone. But then, it depends on what kind of music you play.
Any thoughts on how this amp would pair up with my Marshall 4x12 loaded with Vintage 30s? I'm afraid the V30's might make this lovely head sound a bit harsh in the upper mids. The speakers are well worn in though, about 8 years. Ideas anyone?
as a fun little project you guys should try to figure out how to play the solo from "go to sleep" using pedals (i know that johnny greenwood uses a computer program or something).
Something tells me Andy went out and got the new Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album not too long ago;):)
Anyway, looks like a great amp. It's a shame I lost my job. I don't suppose you guys could employ a correspondent of some sort over here in Michigan (?) :/ lol
How I'm just debating between the AC15HW1X and the AC30HW.
I don't play out as much as I'd like (and figure it can always be mic'd), and the more bedroom friendly volumes of the AC15 in the 7.5 watt mode might be better overall for me. But it would be nice to have something that can do any venue too.
@stratocaster7219 The most significant change I noticed was the amount of clean headroom on these newer models. The Handwired Heritage used the EF86 pentode tube on the first channel, these do not.
@ProGuitarShopDemos There is something to be said for both sounds to be fair. The older ones had some attitude. That said i suppose the hotmode balances that up.
So the normal channel is just a lower gain circuit? I have an AC30H2 and the normal channel is quite different eq and tone wise than the top boost. In this demo they sound similarly voiced compared to the AC30H2.
Also, props on playing a U2 song without delay! Sounds great.
So I have the original Vox AC30H2, from a few years back when they were "limited edition". Having played both, do you find one that you prefer more than the other or are the tones pretty identical? I would imagine this new one has a little differentiation. Thanks!
hey andy i was just wondering what gage strings you are comfortable using when fingerpick, are the tens good? or do you use something thicker like 11's?
Hey now! Just had a couple of questions about the quartet of EL84's.
Is it different tone wise compared to having 2 EL34's?
Is it tied directly to having the 1/2 power switch? In other words, is it necessary to have the 4 tubes to achieve a specific tone when the power is cut in half?
As always, great demo. I love, love, love the Vox tone. Chime to crunch.
Professional videos. And you guys are dishing em out pretty fast to boot. Any plans with demoing more Schecters? I'd really like to hear the solo 6 custom. Also, is it true that the solo 6 standard has a 25.5 scale? Schecter's website says 24.75... Anyways, thanks for all the sweet videos.
It's a retro thing really. Vintage guys like it when the wiring is done by actual people. I'm not really sure if it does make as much of a difference in terms of tone, like they say it does. Really, I'd grateful to afford the bloody thing! :D
@DeadWhiteButterflies robots don't know how to check and see if they actually did what they 'wanted' to do... actually they can't 'want' at all... anyway... they just do what they're programmed to do... and then us humans have to hope that they did what we told them to do.
I think handwireds are more popular due to their being less room for error. Machine wired amps are pumped out, while these handwired are a little more special and more time is taken and they may last longer and have better solders. I know my amp is 40+ years old, nearly 50 now, and it was handwired in the USA, so that may attribute to its long life.. Plus just knowing your amp was handwired with love sounds better than a Robot making it. :P
@Dugger1997 vintage mojo goes well with snake oil cure alls.
supposedly it is the difference in impedance of turrets/eyelet direct connections as compared to copper traces, also current throughput is in there too for what makes the mojo.
@Dugger1997 Not necessarily. Personally, I doubt it makes that much difference - lots of guitarists have fetishes for "the way it was back then". That translates to a nice, hefty markup for manufacturers willing to pander to it.
That said, it's a righteous-sounding amp, but then, it's an AC30, one of the greatest guitar amps ever mande.
