@coolsax64: Leave your cold weather bragging somewhere else. Portland Oregon does not get this much snow in one day very often. I talked to several local residents, some of them who could not attend this event due to hazardous road conditions. Yeah, I'm stupid enough to go up Donner Pass in 20' snow drifts to chase trains.
This train is a hundred times slower than the Japanese Bullet Train but a hundred times cooler. Like taking a step back in time, and that train horn...OMG!!!
@trainboy94: Back when this was posted, YouTube's widescreen didn't look quite right, so I went back to shooting 4:3. I also shot widescreen for the Challenger Circus Train recently. Same camera, it can do either.
What about the SP 4449 with the lettering on the orange streak of the oil tender? Was that the SP 4449 that was removed from service to be in the American Freedom Train?
@LongIslandRailroad18 This is the original 4449 that pulled the Freedom train. It's been repainted back into it's original Daylight paint scheme, which didn't have the large Southern Pacific lettering on the orange stripe on the tender.
WHat happened to the original SP 4449 GS4 that had the large lettering on the orange streak of the oil tender? was that the engine that was pulled from scrap to be the American Freedom TRain?
with all the rest of her GS-4 class engines scrapped, her whistle is a bit of a tribute... a ghost of the past that is refuseing to die... a tribute to her railroad and the legacy of American Steam
Same camera. I was experimenting with recording video in widescreen format, 16:9. YouTube (back then) didn't process the video quite the way I wanted, so I went back to shooting 4:3.
The 4449 was designed for passenger trains (speed) while the Challenger for freight, thus for power, not speed, right? Thus there should be no comparison. (if I am wrong corrections welcome...)
@yankeeshogun well the 4449 has 5500 hp with its booster truck in operation so i would not say the 4449 is designed JUST for speed but she can go 110 mph and the challenger and bigboys were designed for high speed solo freight in all types of terrain, they were fast, cruise speed 70 mph
On paper, moden diesels put out more tractive effort, 166,000 lbs for ES44AC and 103,000 lbs at 10-15 mph, compared to GS4 at 64,800 lbs (see above) and Challenger at 97,352 lbs. The Challenger pulled a 143 car doublestack train by itself up Archer Hill in Wyoming, but I've yet to see a single or dual diesel electric do that!
@cchan006 the diesels actually do not have as much tractive effort, but the big numbers are that the 4449 has 5500 hp at 110 mph and the main amount of power is at high speed like 45 and up with diesels you get all your power at the low speed and it tapers off toward the top.
When a steam locomotive sits for a bit, steam in the cyclinder condenses. Opening the cylinder cocks when starting up blows out the water, which otherwise could damage the pistons.
Depending on who manufactures it and its rotation pattern. A true "Mars" light has a figure 8 rotation pattern while a Pyle Gyralight has a clockwise rotation pattern (when facing whichever end the light is illuminated on). The Mars light the 4449 has is a hybrid, having twin sealed beam lamps instead of a fixed lamp. As for the HP question you had below, SP estimated that their GS4 class 4-8-4 locomotives made 5000HP and 5500HP with the additional booster truck under the cab in use.
Wow! this locomotive is such a beauty. And you did a great job capturing her beauty. When she first took off it was like somthing out of a Scifi movie. Great Job
Look closely under the firebox and you can make you a crushed Pepsi can... Doyle is a big Pepsi fan (besides, Pepsi helped to sponsor the American Freedom Train back in 1975-76)...
I didnt know you made a trip up to portland. LOL, you made it out there it in that weather and Had to cancel my trip because I-5 was at a standstill, and I am a local around portland. LOL Ironic
The 4449 is owned by the City of Portland. Doyle is the president of ORHF (Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation) who are responsible for the upkeep of 4449 and other vintage equipment they have.
yai like it but somehow people like traveling fast, comfort you know that with this holiday express is moore relaxing you know 500 km in 5 day"S !!! :D
Great Video! You must be the guy I met in the baggage car, since the onboard portion of my video is from the same vantage point.
Just one thing: that isn't Canby at the end; it's East Portland Junction. Canby is a number of miles south, where the Oregon Pacific's OTHER line comes off the UP main line.
I'm glad somebody got a video on snowy Sunday! I was all set to take my oldest son up there when I found out they were canceling the rest of the event. Glad I had an inside connection or I would have driven up there for nothing.
Wtf? For this event they have the matching daylight cars.. but for all others they don't?
