  • Wtf? For this event they have the matching daylight cars.. but for all others they don't?

  • That wistlesound at the end, is from a nostalgian dream.

  • daylights are possibly the most attractive steam locomotives ever made

  • I love steam.

  • I love that train and portland too.

    Greedings from Germany

     André

  • The engine has the same colors as my old Kawasaki KZ700 HAD.

  • Oh, man! That whistle at the end is worth it ALL! What a beauty! Great Vid! Thanks for this fabulous upload!

  • @coolsax64: Leave your cold weather bragging somewhere else. Portland Oregon does not get this much snow in one day very often. I talked to several local residents, some of them who could not attend this event due to hazardous road conditions. Yeah, I'm stupid enough to go up Donner Pass in 20' snow drifts to chase trains.

  • @coolsax64 Pal everybody is entitled too there opionion or comments.no matter how stipud not everybody is a genuins on the net.

  • is the steam actually hot?

  • This train is a hundred times slower than the Japanese Bullet Train but a hundred times cooler. Like taking a step back in time, and that train horn...OMG!!!

  • wtf so much smoke

  • @Fire2god steam genius

  • @Fire2god They're not exactly what anyone would call clean burning...though most of that is steam.

  • @slanderoushalo ok Ty....

  • now thats railroading as it was 30 to 40 years ago

  • look at this beast.

  • A very great video! A very great steamengine! A very great train!

  • WHAT BETTER WAY TO DEMONSTRATE THIS

    MAGNIFICENT, BEAUTIFUL MACHINE ; THAN

TO RUN HER IN THE WINTER TIME ! ! !

    " SHE IS HOT ! ! ! INDEED ! ! ! "

  • Great, big steam in the west. a beautiful steam engine in a beautiful winter landscape.

slightly smaller steam locomotives you see on my channel.

    Greetings Volker

  • Did you shoot this with a Handycam????

  • @trainboy94: Not a Sony, but a Canon handheld camcoder.

  • @cchan006 Huh then why is the widescreen where as your others aren't

  • @trainboy94: Back when this was posted, YouTube's widescreen didn't look quite right, so I went back to shooting 4:3. I also shot widescreen for the Challenger Circus Train recently. Same camera, it can do either.

  • @cchan006 south pacific zeiss 12MP

  • this loco is excellent with the empire builder but truly majestic with its own consist

  • Seems the Polar Express!!!!!

  • train from fairy tale.:)))))

  • makes electric trains boring as hell

  • sorry it posted that twice

  • What about the SP 4449 with the lettering on the orange streak of the oil tender? Was that the SP 4449 that was removed from service to be in the American Freedom Train?

  • @LongIslandRailroad18 This is the original 4449 that pulled the Freedom train. It's been repainted back into it's original Daylight paint scheme, which didn't have the large Southern Pacific lettering on the orange stripe on the tender.

  • WHat happened to the original SP 4449 GS4 that had the large lettering on the orange streak of the oil tender? was that the engine that was pulled from scrap to be the American Freedom TRain?

  • Fantastic video! I saw 4449 in Portland in October, but in the snow she is magnificent! Thanks for sticking out the snow for these shots!

  • The snow makes the video perfect with the holiday train

  • 140-144 fckin aswome shot nice job man

  • Thank you for sharing, cchan. All of the shots were great and I especially like your shots from the coach, in the curve. Robert

  • with all the rest of her GS-4 class engines scrapped, her whistle is a bit of a tribute... a ghost of the past that is refuseing to die... a tribute to her railroad and the legacy of American Steam

  • @Kahless02 the whistle at the end sent chills down my spine

  • The whistle sounds very haunting at the end.

    Great way to end it.

  • this is HUGE

  • There's something funny I noticed, is this a different camera?

All your other videos are in a square format but this one is in a regtangular format, must be a different camera, is it?

  • Same camera. I was experimenting with recording video in widescreen format, 16:9. YouTube (back then) didn't process the video quite the way I wanted, so I went back to shooting 4:3.

  • Great video! I got to talk to Doyle himself when the Daylight was in Michigan this past summer.

  • It's great to live in the northwest.

  • Does anybody know who owns the cars? Awesome shots!

  • The 4449 was designed for passenger trains (speed) while the Challenger for freight, thus for power, not speed, right? Thus there should be no comparison. (if I am wrong corrections welcome...)

  • Actually the Challenger (Big Boys too) were designed for speedy freight up steep grades.

  • @yankeeshogun well the 4449 has 5500 hp with its booster truck in operation so i would not say the 4449 is designed JUST for speed but she can go 110 mph and the challenger and bigboys were designed for high speed solo freight in all types of terrain, they were fast, cruise speed 70 mph

  • I was on the Dec.6th ride, my very first ride behined 4449. I look forward to next year.

Oh and I meet Doyle and he sighned my ride ticket.

  • How does the tractive effort compare to a modern day diesel?

    Great camera work!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • On paper, moden diesels put out more tractive effort, 166,000 lbs for ES44AC and 103,000 lbs at 10-15 mph, compared to GS4 at 64,800 lbs (see above) and Challenger at 97,352 lbs. The Challenger pulled a 143 car doublestack train by itself up Archer Hill in Wyoming, but I've yet to see a single or dual diesel electric do that!

  • @cchan006 the diesels actually do not have as much tractive effort, but the big numbers are that the 4449 has 5500 hp at 110 mph and the main amount of power is at high speed like 45 and up with diesels you get all your power at the low speed and it tapers off toward the top.

  • Wow..., beautiful!

  • did i mention the 4449 is coming to Michigan the end of july?

  • does the 4449 use fuel oil, ? easier x country if it does

  • Yup, 4449 uses fuel oil, not coal.

  • @cchan006 #2 bunker oil to be exact

  • how many horsepower is the Daylight? how many HP is the PM 1225?

  • Steam locomotives are not measured in HP, but rather tractive effort.

  • Comment removed

  • 4449's coming to Michigan in July! Woot woot!

  • When a steam locomotive sits for a bit, steam in the cyclinder condenses. Opening the cylinder cocks when starting up blows out the water, which otherwise could damage the pistons.

  • where?!? in michigan.

  • What's the purpose of blowing the steam out the side? Very nice paint job!!

    Cassy

  • rail64 answered your question below in case you haven't read his reply yet.

I've seen all steam locomotives do this when they start moving from standstill, including the 4449, 3985, 844, 2472...

  • He has a awesome dream job

  • What better way to run a holiday express than in a snowy day? Awesome vid!

    Glenn.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh, lol. But still awesome vid.

    Glenn.

  • is the occillating taillight known as a mars light too?

  • Depending on who manufactures it and its rotation pattern. A true "Mars" light has a figure 8 rotation pattern while a Pyle Gyralight has a clockwise rotation pattern (when facing whichever end the light is illuminated on). The Mars light the 4449 has is a hybrid, having twin sealed beam lamps instead of a fixed lamp. As for the HP question you had below, SP estimated that their GS4 class 4-8-4 locomotives made 5000HP and 5500HP with the additional booster truck under the cab in use.

  • Those slow speeds insult her

  • Comment removed

  • Well, she's running on a shortline here, not BNSF!

  • It looks as though the passenger cars have steam heat going. Look at the end-observation car by the coupler.

  • Wow! this locomotive is such a beauty. And you did a great job capturing her beauty. When she first took off it was like somthing out of a Scifi movie. Great Job

  • Look closely under the firebox and you can make you a crushed Pepsi can... Doyle is a big Pepsi fan (besides, Pepsi helped to sponsor the American Freedom Train back in 1975-76)...

  • Comment removed

  • The crushed can got my attention which led me to record video from that angle. Doyle being a Pepsi fanatic, THAT I didn't know until now!

  • I didnt know you made a trip up to portland. LOL, you made it out there it in that weather and Had to cancel my trip because I-5 was at a standstill, and I am a local around portland. LOL Ironic

  • 1:10 pure epic win

  • The 4449 is owned by the City of Portland. Doyle is the president of ORHF (Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation) who are responsible for the upkeep of 4449 and other vintage equipment they have.

  • Does Doyle McCormick own 4449? Or is he just the highest seniority engineer

  • Nice video of the 4449 in the snow!!

  • yai like it but somehow people like traveling fast, comfort you know that with this holiday express is moore relaxing you know 500 km in 5 day"S !!! :D

  • the colors of the 4449 glow so beautifully in the snow. love the contrast!

  • Great Video! You must be the guy I met in the baggage car, since the onboard portion of my video is from the same vantage point.

Just one thing: that isn't Canby at the end; it's East Portland Junction. Canby is a number of miles south, where the Oregon Pacific's OTHER line comes off the UP main line.

  • Nice to have met you in the baggage car, and thanks for the additional information.

  • I'm from Buffalo and I'm sorry to say the 4449 won't make it to town any time soon...

Logitisical problems and height clearances would put a kink in those plans... but one can dream...

  • Thank you for sharing this. It makes me want to visit Portland to see this "up close and personal"

  • The train, scenery and filming are all magnificent! Thanks so much!

  • Steam in the snow, is like... heaven on earth

  • I'm glad somebody got a video on snowy Sunday! I was all set to take my oldest son up there when I found out they were canceling the rest of the event. Glad I had an inside connection or I would have driven up there for nothing.

  • Awesome Video!!

  • Wonderful video!

  • Great video!!

  • Love the snow, and the shot at Canby.

  • Wow! I think this is the first time I've ever seen 4449 in the snow!

  • Man this was GREAT!! Snow and the Daylight great combo!!
