Hilary Hahn on violin fingerings

I've sometimes revised fingerings for something that I've played the same way for 10 years or more. (Not violin but another instrument, but same thing.) It can be a big deal!

This is hard to do. Your brain keeps wanting to go back to the old fingerings. You may rehearse the new one. But then if you take a break from that piece for weeks or months, you find that the old one re-appears.

I find a noticeable difference in tone from one violin soloist to the next. I understand that the instrument accounts for some of it, but I am talking about soloists with recording contracts playing legacy instruments. One particular gentleman seems to me to be trying to saw his instrument in half, as opposed to a touch that would set it on fire. Ms. Hahn, would you please share your thoughts on the ideal approach to bowing, and getting the most out of the instrument?

Just to let you know, Chopin actually had his students replicate problems like Hilary points out here, then you can hear why it works the way it does (why one fingering would work). Incidentally, please don't compare this with shock therapy; this is something which gives you something to think about or helps with unconscious reflexes, rather than damaging the mind or instilling fear.

To replicate the problem, change your fingering just to confuse yourself, and if you still can remember the notes, do it again till you can't. Then go back, don't change the fingering, and enjoy how much better it works to have a plan. Or you might even do something completely different that works better.
