None of that is true. He was supposed to play on ITP, but a hurricane hit Florida, and Sean wasn't able to get to his equipment for a few months, so Chuck had to pick someone else.
Reinert has been a huge inspiration to me too. Actually, Chuck wanted Sean on Individual Thought Patterns too, but he was busy with Cynic. Gene did a good job though. Christy plays really sloppy.. I like some of his stuff, don't get me wrong. But he didn't do a good job on the songs from Human (the ones I have seen live).. Reinerts groove and technique put him way over Christy in my ears.
Chuck asked Gene and never even said anything to Sean meanwhile sean was waiting cause he was under the impression he was going to play on it since chuck had asked him...
guess you're right: they do looked similar! but in my (drummer's)ears they don't sound much the same (I'd say that christy plays a very fast metal-prog style; reinert has huge fusion influences)
I think Christy and Reinert have relatively similar styles, at least when Reinert plays in a heavy metal fashion. Of course Reinert has a HUGE all out jazz influence on the drums, but if you put Human and Sound of Perserverance on, at least the drum tracks there are similarities as far as kind of unorthodox accents. Well, at least unorthodox for a death metal record.
agree, one of my faves!! i love how he uses the toms & cymbals and his odd time grooves and his creativity and... he's definitely my favourite metal-drummer & a huge influence for me
i miss the Vocoder so much!

Could he even drink at this time? XD
Cynic fucking kicks ass and the intro speech given in the song gives me the chills.

I think this is the best I've heard it played. It just sounds a lot heavier.
