try this. when you are at the mother board use what is called go gone to clean the chip under the heat sink then put what is called rubber cement on it and re adjust the heat sink to fit to it. put it back together then try...
@xOptiimist BAD IDEA, rubber cement does not transfer heat well and goo-gone will put a layer of film on the chip making it not conduct heat even further... Thermal Compound is the ONLY thing you should put on it after you clean it with rubbing alcohol.
so just wana say paint thinner and ever clear or rubbing alcohol will also do the trick to help clean the gpu. any questions you can conatct me. this way you do not have to spend money they r house held items.

if that dosent work try and take some dust off from the mother board if it has dust. thats how i fixed mine.

I doubt you should lift up the heat sink again....this cause bubbles and will eventually damage the xbox further. I only assume this because this is the case with computers that I have built. I'll follow this but I won't lift that back up, plus i'll use arctic silver 5....if it doesn't work then oh well I will just have to purchase a fancy new xbox with wifi and what not

Touching it while it is on will not hurt you.. Unless you touch 2 hot points at the same time. Closing the electrical circuit.

Microsoft purposely builds these design flaws. Some of these flaws come from other flaws they intended to have. I'm not saying the e74 error is purposely Microsoft's fault but its probably the cause of another flaw they put in so that you'll have to eventually buy a new xbox. If everything worked the way it was suppose to and these little hiccups wouldn't happen people wouldn't have to buy a new 360 until the next generation of the xbox came out. My PS2 has lasted over 9 years without breaking.

LMAO, all you have to do is wrap it in a towel to get it to overheat, or put two Q-tips with cotton removed in the back to keep fans from turning, its the overheating that resets the gpu and cpu and lets it restart. Wrap it in towels takes about 40 minutes to overheat, q-tip method takes 5 minutes or so. power off, then back on after it cools, and presto! Working xbox

If you do it right the first time it should not over heat. If you do it wrong then it probably will give you that same error again. Its better to have too much thermal compound then not enough!

due to randomness? that means its not a very reliable fixed. plus its not ur gpu thats overheating its ur cpu which has the auto shut off. theres no way leaving the power on will get the gpu hot enuff to remelt the solder...cuz thats the only reason y u would need to over heat it. if its the heating of the compund that ur worried about do the xclamp fix n tighten the screws only to where it meets the chips snug. power on for no more than 30 secs and ur good to go. problem comes back reflow it

Since ban on Lead in electronic industry, solder is much harder and cracks, because it doesnt contain lead. Every manufacturer has problems like these.
@badboyazza2009 either your smoking drugs or putting heat sinks on incorrectly if your seeing temp differences of 5-7c on the same machines under the same load, under the same ambient conditions, with the same heatsinks, with the same case, and CFM... etc etc etc. 5-7c between some superglue and AS5 maybe... otherwise you have managed to defeat the laws of thermodynamics. i would also like to know what kind of temp probes you have used to log these temperatures differences.

ok i am a PC enthusiast, and because of how the anatomy of an Xbox is like a PC i know for 1, you have 1 pretty fucked up GPU. mt friend was playing call of duty 5 for like 5 hours strait and thats what happened, E 74, so the GPU overheated, and probably damaged it quite a bit. overheating it will just kill the GPU further, however this temporary fix is pretty nice, and you can use any other TIM just make sure its micronized silver based not that crappy silicon stuff, silver one is usually grey.

@jer6900 the four red rings mean that your a/v cable is not plugged in. Make sure its full plugged in to both the tv and xbox. if that doesn't work, get a new a/v cable.
yes its called the GDOD, Green dot of death. The LEDs arent bicolor, but there hasent been very many issues of it except for the people who stuff them in places with no ventilation. I have only heard a couple of cases where its overheated at normal operation in the open. So it should be good. Only has one fan but the gpu is way smaller so it produces less heat so not nearly as many problems with this xbox as there were when it first came out
@TheDriver713 I don't see how this method is different from the towel method. All this does it try to heat the GPU as much as it can so the solder joints make contact with the motherboard again. I do not recommend starting any computer system without heat sinks attached. You will burn out those chips very easily even if the system can prevent overheating by shutting down. If your xbox is less that 3 yrs old and you get E74, just send it in.
@TheDriver713 your problem more than likely lies in your hana chip..this guy is tryin to help but he's just learning..some, actually few e74 can be fixed this way cuz its like a chain to hana so obviously his was solved b4 hana...urs now need to be reflowed or sent to M$..check ur screw ..adjust..not too tight evenly tighten..this is sons acct so dont flame plz.

1. Disassemble xbox
2. Take heatsink off, clean thermal paste off
3. Clean and replace thermal paste on GPU chips.
4. Put heatsink back on, put dvd drive back, place fan so that it cools CPU (So you don't fry it)
5. Turn on till you get two lights (#1 and #3)
6. Get better cooling

If you do it right the first time it should not over heat. If you do it wrong then it probably will give you that same error again. Its better to have too much thermal compound then not enough!

Just to point out the power going through the xbox motherboard is 12 volts, harmless... poke around at it with joy, the only harm that could come is a cut or static on your body could short the system so de static first

My model has an overheat fail safe so it just shuts down within 5 minutes of any heating.. and that is why i love my pc or ps3 for gaming now.

due to randomness? that means its not a very reliable fixed. plus its not ur gpu thats overheating its ur cpu which has the auto shut off. theres no way leaving the power on will get the gpu hot enuff to remelt the solder...cuz thats the only reason y u would need to over heat it. if its the heating of the compund that ur worried about do the xclamp fix n tighten the screws only to where it meets the chips snug. power on for no more than 30 secs and ur good to go. problem comes back reflow it

Heat up gpu and cpu chip with hot air gun, over 250*c for 1 min, apply some liquid flux before heating, then rinse with isopropyl alcohol only. This method is called reflow, btw there are professionals who fix this problem 100% succesfully and it will not happen again. The truth is, that all manufacturers experience this problem. Since ban on Lead in electronic industry, solder is much harder and cracks, because it doesnt contain lead. Every manufacturer has problems like these.

@badboyazza2009 either your smoking drugs or putting heat sinks on incorrectly if your seeing temp differences of 5-7c on the same machines under the same load, under the same ambient conditions, with the same heatsinks, with the same case, and CFM... etc etc etc. 5-7c between some superglue and AS5 maybe... otherwise you have managed to defeat the laws of thermodynamics. i would also like to know what kind of temp probes you have used to log these temperatures differences.

@bobby2145 actually they can tell if youve opened your xbox because of a warranty sticker under the faceplate. its just a normal sticker so if you were opening it youd just take it off and throw it away but the peeps at microsoft know youve opened it if the stickers gone because the stickers in the middle of the 2 sides on the part where you split it together.

ok i am a PC enthusiast, and because of how the anatomy of an Xbox is like a PC i know for 1, you have 1 pretty fucked up GPU. mt friend was playing call of duty 5 for like 5 hours strait and thats what happened, E 74, so the GPU overheated, and probably damaged it quite a bit. overheating it will just kill the GPU further, however this temporary fix is pretty nice, and you can use any other TIM just make sure its micronized silver based not that crappy silicon stuff, silver one is usually grey.

@jer6900 the four red rings mean that your a/v cable is not plugged in. Make sure its full plugged in to both the tv and xbox. if that doesn't work, get a new a/v cable.

yes its called the GDOD, Green dot of death. The LEDs arent bicolor, but there hasent been very many issues of it except for the people who stuff them in places with no ventilation. I have only heard a couple of cases where its overheated at normal operation in the open. So it should be good. Only has one fan but the gpu is way smaller so it produces less heat so not nearly as many problems with this xbox as there were when it first came out

@TheDriver713 I don't see how this method is different from the towel method. All this does it try to heat the GPU as much as it can so the solder joints make contact with the motherboard again. I do not recommend starting any computer system without heat sinks attached. You will burn out those chips very easily even if the system can prevent overheating by shutting down. If your xbox is less that 3 yrs old and you get E74, just send it in.
