Alot of great advice here but not all of it,artists like prince,zappa,bush totally contradict his theory and never conformed and never played the game and just recorded what they heard in there head, and relied on the entrepreneurial spirit of old cigar chomping record execs to put it out if it sells it sells!, none of the so called "hip young" execs of today deciding what people should here and see in the maket place and being the total arbitor of taste of the entire population..

@thetruthaboutgolf That goes back to defining success, and expectations. If you are saying that Nickelback is more talented than John Mayer then you are not credible on the subject at all. Yes they have sold more albums, but at the expense of their credibility as pure artists. John has found a way to blend the two....creativity, and selling records with record sales taking a hit due to creativity. If you want your music to be insanely listened to then it needs to be painfully simple. i.e. rap.

Define "Making it".. okay. My definition: Making $28k a year (or more) playing music. Could be concerts, or jazz covers in a wine bar, or busking on 16th street or whatever. That to me would be "making it" and I think I've got some pretty good stuff on iTunes (better than most of the stuff on the radio) but that isn't "making it". John Mayer (as always on these berklee clinics) gives excellent advice.
