I think you are an amazing pianist, o.k. you play the piece in a different way, but surely being able to express the music in your own style is what jazz is all about
Oh never heard of this version, refreshing version hmmm.... love this song but do not know how to improvise so just play from sheets One man's meat is another's poison..,cannot plse everyone...a refreshing change to this piece, once in a while need this in the mundane things of life
if you've ever listened to Erroll Garner, you'd know he'd never play like this. and if the intention was to -make something- new, no, it's tasteless. and it's too much.
hey i wasnt arguing about the interpretation, but the way you commented it. you are clearly to rude to explain your reasoning nicely to daniel. beat it. nice playing daniel, but have to admit this guy is right. though doesnt mean he isnt a wanker.
yea but still i like it, it is always good to hear something different, you know, music had developed because people did experiments on it. So i like anything new, if it is quality ofcurs.
btw...its difficult to criticise someones playing b'cos it all comes down to personal interpretation.... oscar peterson went through a phrase of playing the wrong notes in the melody on purpose, peterson said he was trying to expand the melody, it sounded terrible, like a 5 yr old playing.... luckily he stopped doing it
i dont think you over pedal... i like the descending run at the first turnaround, there's elements of peterson in there... i think your main problem is you're trying to make the tune a lot more complex than it is... if you listen to garner play it its very subtle and the left hand just plays root, chord, fifth, chord slowy... also, it's too loud as well, should be a 'p' or 'pp' level, but there's potential there
wow. well i've heard some crap in my time. But this takes the crap cake. whats with all the notes. its like note here, note there. pfft. sort your notes out... n shit... I much preferred your performance in the Matt Mulholland Big Band. This is just like clam chowder. Clam after clam after clam, and fool, I hate sea food.
Yeah I loved my performance in that band too... It's just such a pity the songs were so terrible. I mean really, what is with that guy's fixation on his penis? I mean come on... Homoerotic much????
honestly, nobody cares if u like sea food. get off his jock and let him do what he likes to do. at least be more sincere and tell him things to improve on. just cuz u dont like it dosen't mean u have to be an ahole.
Tell that to Garner, bro. It was his style I was trying to emulate. I'm not stupid, I'm a student of Jazz Piano and I listen to a whole lot of his stuff.
So do I. I'm not stupid either. I study jazz as well however based on the fact that others who commented one this video in similar fashion, I would have to say that you failed. You stripped the song of the passion that Garner put into his music. Like I said earlier, you just played notes. But there is no point in prolonging this disagreement of ours.I will restrain my self by not commenting in a negative manner. Please accept my sincerest apology.
Wow man, there's constructive criticism and then there's just being angry... Chill!!! ...Meanwhile I've yet to see any videos of you shredding my playing. BOOM!
Very good! A Jazz standard is what it is, but it always leaves place for improvisation and for making it more personnal. Saying that I can't believe how much hate is sprayed out on youtube, especially when music is concerned. Many great musicians have covered standards of all kinds of musics and the ones that I prefer are those who make it their own, who make it new and fresh. Whats the point in playing the same way someone else did before. Innovate people!
Thats what I love about this song and jazz covers, you can add your own flavor and spice. I actually like the runs and embellishments you did. Everything doesnt HAVE to sound like an exact replica or perfect imitation, thats what brings things to life. I am just learning, but this was great!!! I am sure folks talked about Miles the same way. keep playing your way. peace
Nice attempt as sterile jazz etude, but this has nothing to do with the spirit of the original misty, which makes one lay back, close the eyes and dream.
for andocrates: dude Daniel is in like 50 kajillion bands so yea I think he knows how to leave room for them + why would he leave room for a band when THERE IS NO BAND!!??? and also who made you the wise old owl !
no think he knows better than you how the music is best, and I also think that he found it in this video. The sound has such a brillance (despite the bad registering quality), its just wonderful
This is a very quiet song. Do you really think you should add so many fast scales? I like playing the chord changes without many scales because the changes or so beautiful themselfs. No scales needed in my view.
I see your point but I like playing fast licks over slow tunes. Check out Bill Evans playing Round Midnight on 'Live At Shelley's Manne-hole' (i think that's the album..!) - he absoluely powers through this usually slow, understated tune and it comes off great!
I think it's great to express a life time of gained knowledge when you play jazz! I think that's what Errol would have liked to hear in his composition! Not necessarily playing "scales" but what you've learned and what you're experiencing through that knowledge when you play! If that's expressed through hip-ass funky bebop-ery, good on yah! Beautiful man, beautiful.
Hey kid I thought that was great. Dynamics could have played a stronger presence, but that was beautifully played. Erroll would have been proud, keep up the good work.
Very nice, good fun, and lively performance, but I agree with some of the others. Its not very idiomatic (supposed to be a ballad). Its a mish mash of "cool" jazz "tricks", all rattled out at one volume. The piano has a much vaster dynamic range and could produce wonderful tones on a tune like this. Less of the modal gimmetry and more thoughtful harmony and phrasing please. I hope my criticism is constructive. Keep up the hard work.
It's totally constructive dude, thanks. And I know what you're saying - I started studying jazz piano at university this year and I feel like a total beginner again!
Incidently- just finished my degree at the RSAMD, where this year I changed my principal study to jazz piano. I probably studied less "contemporary" jazz stuff, as I think its important to learn about what came first so that you can play in your own style, but be informed by past traditions. This would sound excellent if you just put some thought into the harmonies and ditch the gimmetry. Its a wonderful tune as it is. It doesnt need the keyboard flash. THanks for taking this constructively!
HI! I' m 18, french and fond of misty which must be my favourite jazz song. I play the piano too and I' d like to have more time to pratice...I like the way you play this piece of music ( is it correct in english ?). Could you give me some advices? That could be nice if we talked about it, couldn' t it ? Let me know! see you
Running is interesting, but you need to know when to stop and how....To be a showmanship is easy, to be a good pianist needs more than good comments or applauses...
I Think you have talent and future in this...so keep practicing...
Erroll Garner has gotten even more wild with this song sounding closer to either Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum. I think this guy played too many runs without knowing where to stop, yet not far from the writer of this song. Listen for an old recording of this piece to see what I'm talking about.
You're awesome. I like that you kept with the melody and yet seemed to be able to fit all those runs into it. Sounded a little but like Art Tatum playing Errol Garner! You're good!
Hahahaa... Was it Louis Armstrong that said "If you have to ask what swing is, you'll never understand it..." Maybe not totally applicable but a nice anecdote. And thanks!
Overdone. You have some good technique but it far detracted from the actual song. Improv is good but I prefer the real piece. The high run 7ths to the end of the keyboard were uncalled for and overdone.
