it is all about the bends and the diamiter. take the cat off and get a high flow cat at summit and a cheap muffler, the longer the tube, the deeper the sound, also a larger diamiter or a 1 7/8" pipe to 3" pipe back to 1 7/8 " pipe did the trick for my 89 5.0
what is the size of your exhaust? are you still using the 1 7/8 inch all the way to the back? hopefully you upgraded to a 2 1/4 inch. I would recommend a different exhaust header, maybe pacesetter, but be sure that the welding together of the manifold itself is clean so the exhaust comes out freely. also couple it with a super cat, walker should have this. and the rest, whichever you want to take from the previous post. and yes, an intake would really complement the system.
If you want more of a throaty sound with the stock cat, go with magnaflow. Magnaflow is known for the deeper tone. I put a cat back dual exhaust with Maganaflow resonator and muffler deletion on my 99 Cougar. Where it was almost silent before it now has a nice deep almost V8 sound coming out of a 2.5 V6.
if you havnt figured out which way to go yet, i have a 95 and had a 93 EGT and i have an OBX N1 3" exhasut with a 4.53" tip, and once it warms up, it sounds sick, i just upgraded to an apexi N1 but im waiting for it to come in, ill let ya know, also if your keeping it N/A go with the OBX header n pipe combo, sells for 189 on ebay, slap an intake with that and it will sound sick, plus have a nice power boost 5-10hp.
i had a 91 gt.. i had a high- flow cat on, and it still passes emissions.. but i also had a tuner exhaust (fart pipe) it had a four inch tip and sounded a lot better than that... hope that helps.
i went to autozone and got the 3in "slant" muffeler, and that sounds pretty nice

Usually any (generic) "Apexi" N1 exhaust off of ebay has a decent tone to it, farely inexpensive too

Put a glasspack on it between the cat and muffeler. I think it sounds great though.

get an flowmaster exhaust or magna flow system or get an K&N cold air intake on it.
