Piston clocks annoy the shit out of me. They make too much noise and the clocks can be made easily without pistons by only using redstone and redstone torches.

Very cool, but not very practical. Whenever I make clocks with pistons they short out after a few minutes. It works, but it's not a 'sustainable' technology, at least in my experience...

Admittedly the second is a great idea but not too well thought out. It is as the first but rather than 1 output between on and off it gives 2 opposites between on and off, you could just use the first one but split the output and add an inverter to one of the outputs

Your toggle doesn't have to be different than your original. Just power the block in the extended and contracted position, and put an output off to the side of it.
