As long as there are people within the leadership itself who are being paid off or work with the cartels, this war in unwinnable. In the case of Mexio, I think de-criminalization is one option to rid the country of its domestic drug problem. This would in turn help the Gov focus on the trafficking freeing up valuable resources. Secondly, there has to be more incentive for members of the Gov and armed forces/police to stay loyal i.e. offer them more than the cartels can?

As long as there are people within the leadership itself who are being paid off or work with the cartels, this war in unwinnable. In the case of Mexio, I think de-criminalization is one option to rid the country of its domestic drug problem. This would in turn help the Gov focus on the trafficking freeing up valuable resources. Secondly, there has to be more incentive for members of the Gov and armed forces/police to stay loyal i.e. offer them more than the cartels can?

I think there should be a change in drug policy. Take the sales of drugs out of the black market and put it in a controlled state. Demand for drugs will never go away. Allow addicts to go to a supervised organization where they can get their drugs and get treatment. Except for Marijuana, I believe it should be legal in all forms.

I don't know what time period that book is talking about, but the CIA doesn't have much interest in having a failed state as a neighbor. For example, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (heads of the US Armed Forces) just released a report citing Mexico as tied with Pakistan in likelihood of a sudden government collapse and demanding a rapid deployment of US troops to prevent anarchy.

Just do what other countries like Germany has done. Legalize all drugs and provide them cheap. It will end the war on drugs and the drug wars.
The only problem is that the American people are to ignorant to understand that and the US Government is getting 100's of billions of dollars from tax payers to fund the war on drugs, and the prison industrial complex. Not to mention the militarization of our society and control over the population.

The Columbian, drug wars have raged for 30 some years. Yet they are not next the richest drug using contry in the world. This could take a few more days and the problem will be solved, no se preocupen.

$25 billion a year? If they legalized it but kept the price high to the states (and cheaper locally to attract tourists), in a few years time Mexico would be a rich, peaceful, chilled out paradise!

There has been an increase in deaths related to drug because the cartels are desperated because this Mexican government wants to fight them seriously. People should not be impressed by the deaths and call the war on the cartels a failure or invencible, that's what the cartels want. Time is needed, and patience. That's how crime is beeing defeated in Colombia.
