I've got a Yamaha Custom Z alto, Vandoren V12 4 reeds, a leather ligature and Selmer Paris C mouthpiece. Needless to say, it kicks ass, just like this piece!
This is an absolutely wonderful piece and this saxophone has an amazing sound! Unfortunately I am only able to play the first few bars of this piece ;)
@xXfivefeettallXx Andreas van Zoelen is a member of the Rascher-Saxophone-Orchestra. This Piece was written to Sigurd Rascher on of the first and still best saxophonists. If someone knows how to play this masterpiece it's a member of the Rascher-Quartet or Rascher-Orchestra link Andreas. All of the Raschers are playing Buescher Saxophones which are build like Adolph Sax invented the sax (for classic not Jazz). Therefore it is such an amazing sound! I had the pleasure to meet him:)
@shorelock How are the V12's working for you? I liked some things about their robust sound but it felt like a trade off for playing very lightly and delicately. I still wish I could find something better than Traditionals... I'm tired of the ridiculous prep they keep taking me.
@shorelock My set up- Canonball Big Bell Stone Series, under key neck, Selmer Paris C* mouthpiece, Vandoren V16 2 1/2 reeds, and vandoren master ligature.... best sound at all staten try outs
this, dahl, and fantasia are three extremely challenging but in different ways, this, musical and slightly technical, dahl, deffinatly technacle, all great music
@FantomOfFear Try whatever works for you. Roussea New Classics and the Vandoren Optimums are wonderful, and fairly consistent pieces, in my experience.
@FantomOfFear hey i also have a cannonball big bell stone series and a selmer Larry Teal mouthpiece is working really well for me with a winslow ligature and vandoren V12 size 3 :D
I have vandoren standard reeds for classical and zz for jazz - i use my meyer m5 for everything, would it be a good idea to get a classical mpc like a selmer c or something and my use my meyer for jazz?
Personally I believe this is the best recording around youtube, about the material, for classic I use Selmer series2 alto sax, A28 mouth piece, Vandoren Classic 3 reeds, and a BG L10 ligature. It is a very responsive material, and very versatile
Reference 54 with a C*, Rovner Ligature, and V12 Strength 3 Vandoren reed ftw :D (I'm very selective about reeds, though, and my ideal tone is really dark)
how are the v12 reeds? currently i play meyer 5m with vandoren traditional size 3, but the size 3s are too soft for me. I ordered a few vandoren a28 to try and vandoren v12 size 3.5s. do you think this set up will play better for me? or will the v12s be too hard
@narutocola1 It's personal preference. Different mouthpieces, different strength reeds. I personally use a Vandoren A28 with Vandoren V12 2 1/2. Its perfect for me, but as I said earlier, personal preference.
I have a Yani A992 and have just bought a Vandoren V5 A35 Mouthpiece and use a Vanderen Master Lig with Vandoren ZZ reeds no 3. This set up seems to make a nice sound
What a great piece of music. Glazunov was disturbed by developments of 20th century music and felt out of place. His nostalgia for things past shines through this melancholy autumnal masterpiece.
What mouthpiece, saxophone, reed, and ligature are you using in this video? I am looking for a purely classical setup. I want something that will help me control my sound much better. I find I have great tone but my control is not superb yet.
I'd suggest a Rovner Mark III ligature, and a Rascher mouthpiece because they are so wide and generate a very full warm sound. as for the reed i would go with a Vandoren
The best set up I've used for classical is a Selmer super action 80 series II, using a Selmer C* mouthpiece with a Rovner ligature. And I use either Rico Jazz Select reeds (filed) or Rico reserve. I use size 3m for Jazz, or 3 for Reserve.
Experiment though. Not all set ups work the same for every person. (especially reed size.) Also long tones combining with overtones, are like power lifting for wind players. So keep working at it, and you may eventually have better tone than this performer.
I'm not much worried about the ligature as long as it isn't a rovner which cuts down vibrations (because of the leather and no plate). ZZ reeds are very responsive but too much buzz for my personal taste. I've found that Vandoren Optimum and A28 are good mouthpieces, Rico Reserve are good reeds (i love vandoren but too inconsistent), and I like Yamaha, Selmer, and Yanagisawa saxophones for classical. Keilwerth is my #1 jazz saxophone.
im playing this now as a highschool freshman and i really and impressed by your tone! this piece is a bitch but puts me in a musical high to play it. good work man, you inspire me!!!!
There are only two altissimo notes in the entire piece, both within the last three or four lines. There is an altissimo G, and the last note is an altissimo C.
I love the tempo changes and he has an amazing tone. The only thing I would disagree on is at 3:05 I would build it up to an even faster tempo and louder dynamic to make more contrast between the sections. That, however, is completely up to interpretation.
Wow, that's really great! There should be more professional performances like this on youtube... Anyway, the Glazounov concerto is one of the best, I love to play it...
XD my college audition piece...ahh...frkn things a BEAST omg XD but love it sooo much, its amazing! and so much fun to play. I practice to this all the time XD i like practicing with like a backup track till i get it down even then i still do, i prefer to play with a orchestra or background track. Love this guy :D he did an amazing job

@FantomOfFear Try a Selmer C* 80, or Vandoren A28(V5 Series), or the Optimum mouthpieces. Try different reed combos too when you test them out
