Virginia Woolf was a genius. For anyone who has not had the pleasure of reading her books, her diaries or her essays, I strongly recommend them. Do not take a dramatisation of her depression in the film The Hours as representative of her. She was a joy-filled person too, and wrote about living in this world in a way that nobody had before or has since.
someone help me, i've only read the book... but that's the moment in which orlando meets shelmerdine isn't it? why can't i remember anything about a labyrinth at this point in the novel?
On her own terms she runs into the maze of life and searching- for years. And the harpsichord makes way for the piano virtuoso, with costume to match the era too.
Then when she's ready, she emerges, running for her heart, and calls to the earth for love.
just got the film from ebay. made me cry 20 times. love tilda swinton, love english countryside, love the music, love this poetry. the best thing i've ever seen.
it's definitely the best scene of the film. it shows perfectly the time warp and apart from that the feeling of being misunderstood, alone and sensual at the same time that at least i know very well. however, the music and her look up at the end of the scene show hope and finally - what's cut from this excerpt - the solution via a new chapter of the film: SEX
@simmytam ME TOO!!! I can think of few other men that i would wish would approach sooooo romantically as in this scene with noneother than the STUNNING billy zane as he rides his steed to the rescue.... oh LORD this one makes me SWOOOOONNN!!!
What I've only just noticed is that light seems to shine from out of the bottom of her dress. It's very dim and seems more an optical illusoin than anything else but it's certainly there. It's like she's shedding some stray luminescence as she runs over the grass.
@QueenBoadicea I noticed that as well. but I am assuming that its the grass catching the light in a different way as it bends and pops back up as her dresses passes over it. :)
This film stands alone - I know the novel upon which it is based - but as with all true art - it stands alone, is not derivative, transcends its origins to be something quite unique. Remarkable by any standard.
Oh , yes, it was released on CD ! Try Ebay co Uk or eBay . com .I have bought my original , 1993 copy of CD there. I love this film and the music. I was even listening to this music today :)
That point signifies the change to the Victorian era when damp and drab take over... and all women aspire to wear crinoline like Queen Victoria with the expectation of marriage becoming all they can desire. But forget the film, better to read the book or get it off Audible.
This is one of the most amazing movies I have seen....and I have seen a lot, bc I am an avid movie buff! This is actually my favourite scene, bc it's a testament to the whole theme of the movie : She has no master, but herself, and her existence in this world, this nature.
this scenes represent the best part of the movie...i love the way that she says NO to the lord...and the way she says I'm Dead...and the music is fantastic...tilda rules
i have watched this film for 7 times already. When it was first released in London, it was such a talk of the town. I was lucky to have Sally Potter held a sharing after the movie at Duke of York theatre in Brighton.
este filme é incrivel !!!

I just adore this- brilliant art.
She turns from judgement, and accuses it.
On her own terms she runs into the maze of life and searching- for years. And the harpsichord makes way for the piano virtuoso, with costume to match the era too.
Then when she's ready, she emerges, running for her heart, and calls to the earth for love.
Magical.

This scene is amazing.
It shows how a woman of this period is always walking through a maze. Her character has become indistinct and escapism is her only choice.
