  • If you have a multicore PC (dual core, quadcore etc.) Openshot doesn't use all the cores and the hyperthreding technology of the modern CPU's. It just uses only ONE. :(

In contrast, when rendering a project in Kdenlive, if you open "system monitor" and watch your CPU utilisation, you will see that it uses all of your CPU's cores which gives you faster rendering results and saves precious time.

  • @cerebrux I did not know that.... I am running a single core on my machine

  • Install everything you need through synaptic from this point onward and all your software will run as it should, don't go through software center because they install updated files that will brake your system and then you need to start all over again. I have Ubuntu 11.10 running like a bat out of hell with everything working reliably. If kdenlive is waiting for 12.04 realease to get there act together then you at least know you have a 3 month wait. sad, very sad

  • you can run openshot on a CLEAN install of ubuntu 11.10 ONLY if you do not allow updates while installing and once installed you MUST turn off UPDATES!!! openshot will run, and it will run without choppy video and render. Now if you install kden live you just broke openshot. and will not be able to use kdenlive either from repos or testing. kdenlive changes FreiOr-plugins in MLT i narrowed it down. only update to latest kernal and nothing else! only install by what you need and not updates.

  • @syncdram2012 Luckily I did not encounter this issue when I ran Pinguy OS based on Ubuntu 11.04. Thank you for taking the time to point out this problem to my visitors. I wonder if anyone mentioned this on Launchpad... It may be helpful for the developers to know this so that the issue can be fixed.

  • @LinuxSpatry I utterly depend on kdenlive and now can't use it. openshot was always my backup. i took hours trying to figure out how to get kdenlive to run again and used clean installs to see who was causing the problem. kdenlive cannot keep up with all the outrages updates ubuntu is issuing. its awful! To get openshot to run perfect with no choppy video or sound, backup, clean install and DON'T allow updates during install!!! important. Install synaptic and turn off updates! install openshot.

  • @syncdram2012 Have you considered running it in a virtual machine? I know that is probably not the best answer but it could be a reasonable workaround until the problem is solved by the community.

  • @LinuxSpatry already tried with the ill fated results. this is the only way i can run at this point in time on a clean install giving up my beloved kdenlive and going to my backup openshot to run. kden won't run from repos or testing period. I'm not in the mood to run another distro just to get kden going again. I shouldn't have to.

  • There is a BIG problem with Ubuntu based distros today concerning kdenlive and openshot. Both are broken when run in ubuntu. Openshot boldy screams its your hardware this does not have a leg to stand on. Kdenlive seems to not know what way to run due to the fact that with every update ubuntu put out now something brakes. I've run both kden and openshot on ubuntu 11.10 before ubuntu went hog wire with updates that just brakes everything! Forget kdenlive for now, you can run openshot....continued

  • @syncdram2012 I have found that Kdenlive is the closest thing to Sony Vegas that runs in Linux. I have my eye out on Lightworks and hopefully they will be releasing a Linux port soon.

  • Rendering has never crashed for me, maybe it's hardware related?

  • @fatriff I doubt that it is a hardware related issue because I was able to get Kdenlive to render video when I was using Zorin and Pinguy OS... This version I am using came from subversion so there may be a slight bug in the software. I am pleased with the way Openshot handles Melt rendering so I will continue to use that while I will use KdenLive to compose my video projects.

  • I just discovered your channel and wow I love it!!! I have wanted to migrate to Linux but have had a bit of fear that I wouldn't be able to find help. I was wrong. I have subscribed and I am watching your series for newbies. I have a HP DM!-3020, with 8GB memory and a 500 GB hard drive, so I think Linux will run on it. Thanks again. 2 flippers up,lol.

  • @MrPenguin098 Thank you for subscribing! I am glad you found my channel and that you find my content to be useful to you. If you have any questions please let me know and I will try my best to answer it for you. I am relatively new to Linux myself so I may not always have the best answers but I will be glad to point you in the right direction. OSGUI, TWIL and Nixie Pixel influenced my decision to switch from Windows to Linux and gave me inspiration to start my own show.

  • @triforcelzg I have a suspicion that it is an individual (or group of individuals) who is seeking to maintain viewer superiority by bashing other Linux show hosts. This tactic of course is futile. I am NOT going anywhere! It is my commitment to continue delivering fresh ORIGINAL content to my viewers, much to the chagrin of anyone who feels they have the power to hamper my freedom of expression. Comments made by this individual (or group) will NEVER be seen on this channel.

  • Thanks for the tip. ^_-

  • Thanks. I've never had this problem myself, but I'll remember this tip if I run in to it.

  • @blackoutworm Even if I did not have this rendering problem, I will still use Openshot for rendering as it's export templates are perfect for my needs. I am glad I stumbled into this. Interestingly enough you can also import your Kino projects into Openshot for rendering as well! How cool is that?

  • You might want to make your qt/kde apps look better with qtconfig, here is a video how to do it:

  • @scorici Great idea!

  • Hello Spatry, what software do you use to record your desktop?

  • @myhayserano FFMPEG from the command line::: ((ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i plughw:1,0 -f x11grab -r 15 -s 1360x768 -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec mpeg4 -b 30000k output.avi)) You may need to modify it to suit your needs... More information is available from the FFMPEG site and the "MAN Pages"

  • To my Subscribers... Expect to see some Tutorials coming out on Kdenlive. I will show you how to Edit in Kden and render in Openshot!

  • thanks for the tip! KDenlive won't install on my current install of Knoppix though, so i'll just keep using OpenShot :) works nice too!

  • Good to see that Openshot has a use 4 u. I was impressed by the Youtube version of Openot devs conference. Interested in why you prefer to not use Openshot for all your vids.

  • @grey0powerlessnesss I used Openshot exclusively for a time, however it does too much flickering when applying transitions and the effects you can use are limited. Also, Kdenlive gives you easier and better control of your clips. I used Openshot because it's rendering capabilities with melt were better than the presets offered by Kdenlive. I edit in Kdenlive and Render in Openshot! This is the best of both worlds. Why have ALPO when you can have fillet mignon?

  • Short vid here, and to the point!.. PS: I don't exactly know what problem with Youtube you had, but I, personally, am not happy with Youtube - mostly over the bs they pulled on Jordan, and his TWIL channel. I'm sure that there will come a time when Youtube is cut down to size, and an even bigger, better fish will replace them as the premier video site.

  • Good alternative way... Thanks!
