I saw Rory back in 83 at a blues festival. Turned me on to a whole new style of blues. I bought her High Heeled Blues album (yes, vinyl) and promptly wore it out.
Man she is amazing. I cant figure out how she is making those knocking rhthyms in the main groove. Is it the slide hitting the neck? or her foot? or a combo of both.
I would love to just sit and talk with her for an hour or two.
@ec476405 - Awesome. I will pick it up. I have the Homespun stuff, its cool for me because I live and perform on a cruiselines, and having things shipped to me is difficult. Hopespun has the direct download feature which is awesome. You can download it to your laptop parts at a time and then practice.
A lovely video! Rory is the very best female delta blues guitar player/singer of all time and has done more then anyone in preserving teh genre - it's that simple!
Bonnie Raitt would actually cream over this version and I am sure she knows and appreciates her.
This woman is real, the know-it-all critics of a year ago haven't a clue about the blues, music or musicians. She is genuine, she learned from real Mississippi Delta blues people.
These critics should know that the musicians they think are better would spit on that idea.
Quite sad the pollution on the internet of unlearned foolish comments taking up space.
I just keep coming back to the 3 W.C. Handy awards that she has. I think that is enough for anyone who knows anything about guitar to understand how good she is. All the nay-sayers apparently don't have a grasp of that yet...
I've been a fan of Rory for quite a few years. Every time I hear her playing it makes me want to get my guitar out and play. That is what you call an inspiration. What a dream come true if she could bring her family over for some drinks ,a cookout, and some jamming together!
I just saw her in concert a few weeks ago (A. M. San Diego.) The show was amazing! She is an artist in full possession of her craft. She may sound a little bit emphatic from time to time, but that is part of her personality ( a strong personality, indeed; but one that also includes a soft, more lyrical side, that is evident in her own songs.) Her guitar and her vocals just filled the whole place...
Lame. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade. Her vocal is forced, and could not be more un-authentic. Sure, her guitar playing is almost note-for-note, but who gives a shit. The fact is, she is playing a Robert Johnson staple. Fine—and yes, the guitar is incredible—but the performance is forced, mumbled, and whiny. Doesn't matter if she is White (or Black, Chinese, Native American), it is watered-down fake horseshit.
its not ONLY his oppinion. im with him on this. she sounds kind of lacking in the feeling department. sure its a great cover, its pretty well note for note.. but lets hear Bonnie Rait play and sing it, and it'd probly have a helluva lot more feeling to it, especially the vocals.
You have no idea how uninformed and ridiculous your criticism of Rory Block is. You couldn't play 1/1000 as well, or with more true understanding if you had 10 lifetimes to practice. You and your ilk could not carry her guitar case. Do a little research; check out her body of work; it's INCOMPARABLE, period.
Yeah right. I WISH I had a so little soul. Rory is just about my favorite player right now. I have learned as much watching her style and rhythms as anyones.
Why is put-on over-the-top playing & presentation considered soul? Oh yeah because people don't know what soul is. This is technically good, soulfully suspect.
Merci pour mettre ici les trois vidéos de Rory Block!Je souhaite que des autres seront ajoutés bient´òt... Jáime sa maniére de jouer/frapper de/la guitare, et pour moi ce nést pas si simple de copier ;-)
I searched high and low to find one of those guitars- not the one she plays in the song but the one on the stand. They only made 38 of them and I finally found one recently. She is my favorite Blues performer because her great playing and singing and it's obvious she puts her soul into it. Great Stuff!
She is an amazing soulful player....plain old wonderful

@Pops531 It's a combination of both. This video is from an instructional DVD where she explains that. It's a Hal Leonard DVD, highly recommended
