I tracked down the lineage of the Gilligan's Island - it followed McHale's Navy, also set in the south pacific, and that pilot was based on a stranded PT boat crew (now how many of those were there?) South Pacific was based a book by a guy who hung out with PT guys in the Solomon Islands, so the whole "desert island" (fantasy island, survivor) thing really started with the PT 109 story.

Indeed, the D's from the 1950s-60s are VERY different than what their leaders are today. JFK was most definetly not a "blame America first" wimp.
