The thing is that parents shouldn't take VERY SMALL children to Chuck E. Cheese's or theme parks because theme mascots can be really frightening.
I think that the people in costume get some sort of sick joy out of scaring little babies like that. It's different when a little kid watches Winnie the Pooh on Playhouse Disney. Eeyore is cute and cuddly on screen, but in person he's just massive and overwhelming!
That POOR kid. I remember when I was little and Yosemite Sam scared the everloving crap out of me by sneaking up on me like that. I think those costumed mascots enjoy traumatizing small children.
