@Dave - simon references praying only in this this song. praying could be to any deity. the tune does take after a christian/baptist/gospel tone, but in no way does it mention Jesus Christ. i would find that to be highly contradictory given your aformentioned point that simon is Jewish. maybe i'm missing something... either way you cut it, this is a fantastic song and simon is one of the best songwriters ever...in any religions capacity.

@miloszewski For religious people, the word 'praying' will have a special meaning. For the rest of us, mortal earthlings, it's a word that could just as well mean 'hope' or 'wish' or 'long for'. Religious people don't have a monopoly on the word 'pray'. Even the occasional atheist might state he 'prays' that his children will be safe & well and remain healthy.

Nice about this song is the absence of an explicit religious context. So it might make sense to all kinds of people (as often with PS).

By the way, Paul Simon is a human being without any problems to feel sympathie for other cultures, religions, thoughts. He is no way the one who is bigoted. I wished everyone including me would be as noble and great-hearted as he is.

As far as I know wasn't he raised very orthodox,his father was liberal.He sometimes uses lines like that 'sweet as an apple on christmas day.' The german pre-war jews lived the same way,quasi at home in both religions,perhaps this is enviable.

By the way, I am christian too. I even taught this in school( its a normal subject in Germany) when I was in my twenties. My friend used to say I was the preaching 'young girl in a parking lot' in 'Duncan'^^

@DaveWollenberg This is not a christian song. His salvation comes from meeting (and probably falling in love with) another human he meets. If anything, this is a humanist song. Of course you are 100% free to believe that their meeting was an act of god's great providence, just as I am entitled to believe it was and act of pinocchio's providence or just sheer coincidence. But to conclude that this song must be christian, no.

If you're wondering why he didn't hit the high notes here...Sounds like he's got a cold...Still sounds good though...More soulful on his part than the original...He's really blendin' with that choir!
