I will never forget these two ICONS or the concerts I was blessed to witness...
@BringBackRealMusic37: Neil Young wrote it; CSNY recorded the version you are most familiar with shortly after the killings at Kent. It works for me both ways but I love this version.
The memorial is right behind Taylor hall where the shooting took place on the Commons. I live in Kent and was there when the National Guard killed four students when Governor Rhodes sent them to Kent State to quiet down the protesters that were mainly from somewhere besides Kent. The memorial is a welded together a bunch of metal that some people call art with bullet holes still intact. Good song by Neil Young!

@MrGrevy maybe partly due to the fact that he was expanding an unpopular war that he said he would end...re-instituting the draft in the process. so i think some would agree that he was partly responsible. he also refered to the wounded and dead as "bums." but hey...what more would you expect from the least popular president in the histroy of the country?
@nickfromCO Carter or gw bush was the most unpopular president, Nixon ended the vietnam war and did a lot of good things. Leave Nixon alone and get off the bandwagon. The 60s are over man.
@MrGrevy When you understand the depth of corruption in the Watergate Scandal, the words; "Leave Nixon alone..." will never be uttered from your mouth again. Then again I think you might just be a nazi.
@MrGrevy Nixon not only spied on his opponents for the presidential election, but also supported the taft-harley act and was a member of the HUAC(House Un-American Activities Committee, itself highly unamerican). He is probably as close to a hitler as we've had in america, besides McCarthy and President George W. Bush. Seriously, look up how Hitler came to power and the history of these 3 men. Bush, in particular, like Hitler, used a terroist incident to take away liberties.
@Salinear To be fair, it was Nixon who signed the papers to end our involvement in Vietnam. Kennedy and Johnson did nothing but kept it going so companies could continue to make money off of it. Johnson admitted so. It's not all black or white, there's a lot of gray, good and bad, with all.
@MrGrevy You are so off base it's not even funny. You are right, the 60s are over, but that spirit should come back to this country, it's sorely needed.
KSU does acknowledge the massacre on their website however it is somewhat buried and they refer to the tragedy as "events" . However a University is nothing if not a big business so I would not expect them to make a big deal out of it. At least the students names are included. May God Bless them and keep them and have mercy on their killers.
PLEASE go see him live on the twisted road tour! he played this on an electric, it was a life altering event! I was 4th row! worth every single cent! best amercian currency I've ever spent.
I live in Kansas too, so I'm used to Jayhawkers like this one. One of the students who killed was in ROTC walking to class. Kinda shoots your theory about "trouble-makers" all to hell. You don't turn M1 rifles on kids unless you want to send a message--"dissent will not be tolerated, and if innocents have to die to drive that message home, then so be it." May 4, 1970 is a date that will live in infamy--a date upon which our own government used fascist violence to crush protest against policy.
You've got me all wrong. I never said I supported the shootings. What the Guard did was outright murder and was in no way justified. I only expressed contempt for the protest itself. Students, including Jeffrey Miller, were throwing spent tear gas canisters and beer bottles at police and guardsmen, and they intentionally set fire to the ROTC building on campus. If you're going to protest, do it in a civil, nonviolent manner.
May 4, 2010...40 yrs later and Neil Young is still the only one with the guts, integrity and decency to mourn these lost souls in song. I was 16 then, the parents of my generation dismissed this tragedy as "America doing what America has to do". Efing Vietnam War turned the world upside down. Destroyed America as we knew it and now history is repeating itsself. Peace, Love, Grace to all.
@landaengr I was born in 89' so I can't relate with you and living that experience, but I got more respect for your generation then I do my own. You guys stood for something then, applause

"Time marches on ... Nobody gives a shit about Nixon anymore"
Maybe not, but today, instead of a conservative President like Nixon and National Guardsmen firing on civilians, you have civilians killing other civilians ... such as the guy who murdered several persons in a Tennessee church in summer 2008 because, he said, "The people in the church were liberals."
Nixon may be long gone, but the sentiments motivating the Guardsmen at Kent are with us still in 2010.
My Dad told me he went to Kent State on business last year, and tried to find the memorial. He asked the students there where it was, and none of them had any idea what he was talking about. For the love of all that is good, things have got to change in this country.
Troll or social commentator? Many of those kids were trying to cause a scene and shut down the campus. I'm not saying that the murder of the four students (some of which had no part in the protest) was in any way justified. Still, I have no time for the draft-dodging, draft-notice burning, childish antics of many of these people. We have the luxury of living in the greatest country on earth, and we have a duty to perform service for her whenever she calls for it.
You my friend, should reevaluation our position. This nation was founded on protest, civil disobedience and revolution. Burning the ROTC building could be considered extreme, however, they were merely expressing their resolve against a war. All perfectly legal, except the burning, but there were laws in place to deal with that. The guard opened fire without orders or authorization to do so. I answered my call to service, to defend their and your, right to protest.
@Wrathbone13 . Theres a 2 1/2 acre memorial at Kent State it over looks the commons. So it's not in the heart of the campus. It's off to itself. Most students might not know about it before they go there but they will when they arrive. It's in the freshmen orientation. Theres quiet a few memorial structures there.
@Wrathbone13 They should definitely know, but don't forget that for those of us in NE Ohio, KSU is a local school, not the historic site it is to outsiders. The shootings are in the news here every May 4, and I've heard personal stories about that day, but if you're only 18 in 2010, 1970 feels like a million years ago. Even for someone like me who cares, I can't grasp it the way older friends can since I was only 3 in 1970.
@Fudelan That is absolute bullshit. I graduated from KSU in 1981. My son graduated from Kent in 2006. My daughter is a junior there now. Freshmen orientation offers a 10 minute recap of the "tragedy". The word "massacre" is NOT used at Kent.
@Wrathbone13 Oh wow your dad really sacrificed so much. I hope they erected a monument to him. After all, "Business" was what the movement was all about. Be sure to make lots of money!! Unbelievably disgusting.
@Wrathbone13 well it depends on when he went. Did he ask a tour group of possible incoming freshmen? Because trust me. If you ask ANYONE who goes to Kent, they can tell you.
advanman22 when was the last time you made another person aside from needing money happy?? everyone thinks oh feed the poor n all that but there are other ppl you can make happy not just the poor or w/e you "think" about.
ah everytime I hear Neil Young's voice I get the chills. I love how his voice makes you feels. It really hits home. I agree with yu LordLetoMeetsOccam. Seriously, there are too many who knowingly turn a blind eye when people around them are being tortured and choose to do nothing about it since it doesn't effect them directly. God this world is fucked; has been from the start it's so sad.
Indifference, being aloof and apathetic as a result of being desensitized to evil. This world is indeed f@#$%^&, but Christ has overcome the world by His death and resurrection. He made the only way out.
@AdavanMan22 Yes. I agree with you. Like all those who turned a blind eye when their brothers and sisters in Iraq were being tortured and murdered by Saddam Hussein’s regime. And then they call Bush a criminal for stopping it. You turned a blind eye to all that death thern and now you stand here and talk your peace and love SHIT? Sorry, dirty little transparent hypocrites. You know who you are.
At the time it was "criticize Nixon and watch out!" INS, IRS, FBI etc on your ass!

@Wrathbone13 WTF are you telling me there is nothing there??? I was in college at wright state univ when it happened . FUCK
rfranklinw1 1 year ago
@Wrathbone13 . Theres a 2 1/2 acre memorial at Kent State it over looks the commons. So it's not in the heart of the campus. It's off to itself. Most students might not know about it before they go there but they will when they arrive. It's in the freshmen orientation. Theres quiet a few memorial structures there.
crookhunter 1 year ago
@Wrathbone13 They should definitely know, but don't forget that for those of us in NE Ohio, KSU is a local school, not the historic site it is to outsiders. The shootings are in the news here every May 4, and I've heard personal stories about that day, but if you're only 18 in 2010, 1970 feels like a million years ago. Even for someone like me who cares, I can't grasp it the way older friends can since I was only 3 in 1970.

@Wrathbone13 there is a memorial though, a stone in the ground. i feel sad though that the kids don't even know about the tragedy
daveevad1671 1 year ago
@Wrathbone13 That is a sad thing. I grew up in the late 60's and 70's. How could they forget?
MichaelD5625 1 year ago
@Wrathbone13 I go to KSU and i highly doubt this... Its mandatory to take a class that heavily describes the massacre.
Fudelan 1 year ago
@Fudelan That is absolute bullshit. I graduated from KSU in 1981. My son graduated from Kent in 2006. My daughter is a junior there now. Freshmen orientation offers a 10 minute recap of the "tragedy". The word "massacre" is NOT used at Kent.
Why do imposters such as yourself pen such crap?

@Wrathbone13 Oh wow your dad really sacrificed so much. I hope they erected a monument to him. After all, "Business" was what the movement was all about. Be sure to make lots of money!! Unbelievably disgusting.
MrGrevy 1 year ago
@MrGrevy HE means the monument for the students that died in the Kent University shootings...thats what the song's about...
Noseheros 1 year ago
@Wrathbone13 well it depends on when he went. Did he ask a tour group of possible incoming freshmen? Because trust me. If you ask ANYONE who goes to Kent, they can tell you.

ah everytime I hear Neil Young's voice I get the chills.

Yes, Christ saves us. We must act.
