  • At the time it was "criticize Nixon and watch out!" INS, IRS, FBI etc on your ass!

  • Close your eyes and listen..

  • I've been told "a southern man dont need him around anyhow".. I'm southern and I respectfully disagree, Lynyrd Skynyrd

  • @mrcmoneymillionaire I've heard that Skynyrd and Neil were actually on good terms and they were simply messing around on Sweet Home Alabama

  • @mrcmoneymillionaire

This reference was to another Neil Young song "Alabama":

(where he said the below about Alabama)

Your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch

And a wheel on the track

  • good tunes to listen to while blazed

  • i wish i was born when performances/concerts (the crowd) weren't like a disney sing along video in a 1st grade music class.

  • Thumbs up if you like this song. Thumbs up if hate new music. Thumbs up if the people who disliked this music have their own opinions about music and making fun of them is how you express your opinions.

There, i did it for you.

  • what kind of guitar is he playing?

  • @whatdRaysay A 1968 Martin D-45 're-issue.' It's cool because he and CSN got theirs at the same time, so the guitars' serial numbers are in numerical order.

  • great song with that hint of anti Gov

  • @ozzmosis55 more than a hint

  • Such a powerful song!

  • 25 people want to be Ann Coulter's baby momma.

  • Sorry to say it but shootin muhfuckas is the way to roll in the 330.

  • there was an ad for the army before this video... that's messed up...

  • @MrTheAbominations agreed

  • This song still gives me chills..

  • christ it wasn't even our war.

  • @MadGhoulSoldier yeah well thats command for you mate, they have their heads so far up there arse's they dont care who suffers as long as the governments happy. I dont support that war or even the one were in now, the government says were not going to quit until all terrorism in the world is gone, thats never going to happen but if your looking for blaim for 'Nam blaim the feds and no matter what support our troops.

  • i have to say growing up with song just made life that much better!! I remember when I was young and then I staeted to tourn old. I distictly remember 24 though.

  • We're learning about the American Revolution in Soc Studies and my teacher played this song in class today :D

  • My Daddy brought me up on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young-among many other great artists. I've seen many concerts in my time, but only twice have I seen a "One Man Band." No back up bands, none of that. Neil Young came to Indiana and brought his harmonicas and guitar-nothing else and rocked it!!! Bob Dylan was the same way-NO Backup bands, just his harmonica & guitars. Both concerts were amazing! I will never forget these two ICONS or the concerts I was blessed to witness...

  • landaengr you are ignorant

  • Beautiful, although the song is about a tragedy. Definitely check out The Isley Brothers version of this which is amazing! Thanks for posting.

  • Neal Young Forever

  • @MrLukesexton Neil* Young... prick

  • How can anyone not like this song?! Neil Young is a music genius!!

  • My alma mater...sadly, it's remembered ONLY for this...

  • Has anyone hear the solo electric version, it's from his 2010 tour

  • That took a pair to call out Nixon. Rock on Neil.

  • @GoldeneyePwner - This kind'a stuff don't get airtime nomore - they learned a lesson with Dylan --

  • @GoldeneyePwner It didn't really. Criticism of Nixon became almost universal after that.

  • @Threeballer97 keyword "after" Young was risking deportation when he wrote this song

  • im actually gonna post a comment thats about the video.. and NOT about another comment!... neil young is the shit. his music will never die.

  • gingers have no soul

  • @Drunka123 haha

  • Anyone know what tuning he's using here

  • @wcooper02 it's in double drop D

  • it went dwon the shitter

  • Both versions of this song are outstanding, it works so well either way. love it.

  • whats the tuning??? please someone respond

  • @17scottscott drop d

  • @17scottscott It's not just Drop D- it's double Drop D. DADGBD. Also, it sounds like he's half a step down.

  • this is a crosby, stills, nash, and young song, right??

  • @BringBackRealMusic37: Neil Young wrote it; CSNY recorded the version you are most familiar with shortly after the killings at Kent. It works for me both ways but I love this version.

  • How does he get all of that sound out of a single guitar? He's astonishing.

  • Even if One does NOT go to Kent State and HAS never been there, they know the name. They definitely know what happened there in May of 1970.

  • Love neil! Checkout my version please!

  • The memorial is right behind Taylor hall where the shooting took place on the Commons. I live in Kent and was there when the National Guard killed four students when Governor Rhodes sent them to Kent State to quiet down the protesters that were mainly from somewhere besides Kent. The memorial is a welded together a bunch of metal that some people call art with bullet holes still intact. Good song by Neil Young!

  • I'm sure Neil Young would be proud to have that bank commercial preseding his performance. What has happened to us?

  • The 20 people who disliked this have no soul. Thumbs up if you agree

  • @Ericclapton325 I have no soul, and I still liked it.

  • @funnyguitarplayer Haha thats what im saying. Keepin on rockin in the free world my brother

  • @Ericclapton325 will do sir, will do.

  • @Ericclapton325, they have souls. they're hidden deep down, misguided, or tarnished and corrupted.

  • @Ericclapton325 Ugh stfu you fascist weirdo. Way to miss the entire point of the 60's.

  • Comment removed

  • @LUKE82603 ME?

  • @Ericclapton325 Not at all my man. I meant no brain besides no soul. TAKE CARE !

  • Thanks for the clip!

  • does anyone know....is this in drop d tuning or double drop d?

  • @nickfromCO both Es are tuned to D

  • ohio still rules

  • Listen to 1970 Atlantic Assembled Multitude "TOMMY" album's scorcher(corker) version of Neil Young's + C,S,N & Y's "OHIO".

    You won't believe it

  • I remember walking out of Stouffer hall...thinking holy shit!

  • its the info age too!! but who would know a young hit that was actually mad famous after csn said they must do it together which actually made teaxh your children never hit #1 which it would of bc they released ohio to quikly after teach ur children

  • He has something we all dont have.

  • Not sure what Nixon had to do with ANY of this, but hey, don't be misled by the facts.

  • @MrGrevy maybe partly due to the fact that he was expanding an unpopular war that he said he would end...re-instituting the draft in the process. so i think some would agree that he was partly responsible. he also refered to the wounded and dead as "bums." but hey...what more would you expect from the least popular president in the histroy of the country?

  • @nickfromCO Carter or gw bush was the most unpopular president, Nixon ended the vietnam war and did a lot of good things. Leave Nixon alone and get off the bandwagon. The 60s are over man.

  • @MrGrevy When you understand the depth of corruption in the Watergate Scandal, the words; "Leave Nixon alone..." will never be uttered from your mouth again. Then again I think you might just be a nazi.

  • @gooselax27 Umm yeah when you bring "nazi" into it, you lose all credibility. Nice try though.

  • @MrGrevy Nixon not only spied on his opponents for the presidential election, but also supported the taft-harley act and was a member of the HUAC(House Un-American Activities Committee, itself highly unamerican). He is probably as close to a hitler as we've had in america, besides McCarthy and President George W. Bush. Seriously, look up how Hitler came to power and the history of these 3 men. Bush, in particular, like Hitler, used a terroist incident to take away liberties.

  • @Salinear To be fair, it was Nixon who signed the papers to end our involvement in Vietnam. Kennedy and Johnson did nothing but kept it going so companies could continue to make money off of it. Johnson admitted so. It's not all black or white, there's a lot of gray, good and bad, with all.

  • @MrGrevy You are so off base it's not even funny. You are right, the 60s are over, but that spirit should come back to this country, it's sorely needed.

  • Amazing and talented man. Neil can really paint a picture in your head with lyrics.

His guitar is second to none.

  • @Dummerd idk stills has an awsome sound too!!!!!

i jus like neils acoustic i mean luv!! not the grunge era tho :(

  • KSU does acknowledge the massacre on their website however it is somewhat buried and they refer to the tragedy as "events" . However a University is nothing if not a big business so I would not expect them to make a big deal out of it. At least the students names are included. May God Bless them and keep them and have mercy on their killers.

  • PLEASE go see him live on the twisted road tour! he played this on an electric, it was a life altering event! I was 4th row! worth every single cent! best amercian currency I've ever spent.

  • The man sings from the soul, thats all there is to say.

  • i was there when it happend i was really close to my friend who got shot..rip

  • This is a great song, but so tragic. Those people died in the name of peace. I remember the day the shooting happened. Sad.

  • were any of the shooters convicted of murder?

  • I live in Kansas too, so I'm used to Jayhawkers like this one. One of the students who killed was in ROTC walking to class. Kinda shoots your theory about "trouble-makers" all to hell. You don't turn M1 rifles on kids unless you want to send a message--"dissent will not be tolerated, and if innocents have to die to drive that message home, then so be it." May 4, 1970 is a date that will live in infamy--a date upon which our own government used fascist violence to crush protest against policy.

  • @mr2ister

You've got me all wrong. I never said I supported the shootings. What the Guard did was outright murder and was in no way justified. I only expressed contempt for the protest itself. Students, including Jeffrey Miller, were throwing spent tear gas canisters and beer bottles at police and guardsmen, and they intentionally set fire to the ROTC building on campus. If you're going to protest, do it in a civil, nonviolent manner.

  • i was there and dozens of times since do you think you are safe give the power back to the people

  • May 4, 2010...40 yrs later and Neil Young is still the only one with the guts, integrity and decency to mourn these lost souls in song. I was 16 then, the parents of my generation dismissed this tragedy as "America doing what America has to do". Efing Vietnam War turned the world upside down. Destroyed America as we knew it and now history is repeating itsself. Peace, Love, Grace to all.

  • @landaengr check out this cover of neil youngs classic type in Ohio-Machine Gun-The Isley Brothers-1973 check the 13 minute version

  • @landaengr landaengr you are ignorant

  • @landaengr I was born in 89' so I can't relate with you and living that experience, but I got more respect for your generation then I do my own. You guys stood for something then, applause

  • @burnthegov i understand i was born in 66'

  • @landaengr The thing is, he is a REAL American. There is a difference between Neil Young and the artists of the day who questioned Nixon, and some of them made the greatest fucking music of the decade; and then those who now wave the nationalist flag.

  • Comment removed

  • @landaengr Actually, he's Canadian.

  • @PHAN226 Can we claim him as well, then?? Because I haven't heard of anyone who gets politics as much as he does.p

  • This is good but its too quiet for me. I like the electric version when he's with CS&N and they're doing the chant at the end and it has that "protest power" to it.

  • the single greatest version of this song ever recorded...you can almost hear the despair in his voice..ingenious...like he was a student speaking from the grave..

  • I cant believe i jusst heard you call neil young a loser..lol.. just like a person who would vote for McCain and Palin... I believe ignorant is the word...its people like you bringing this world down..war mongering.. money hugry people!

  • Comment removed

  • Does anyone know how he tuned his guitar on this one?

  • @paz62900

    DADGBD

  • It's some form of an open 'D" tuning. That much you can hear at the beginning when he's tuning the low 'E' string down in pitch.

  • the viet nam war was a conflict in southeast asia that...jesus christ if we have to re-educate every generation then this country will fail. We need a common narrative for the population--it's not a matter of opinion, it's fact..

  • Awesome.

Believe I read somewhere that there was no video from Massey, so the video here is actually from a show around the same time at the Goodspeed Operahouse in CT - that's why the lip synch is off in places.

This will crack you up if you're familiar with that venue, particularly with what it was like before it's recent renovation. Was a run-down 100yr-old place, perched over an empty part of the lower CT river.

  • i always wondered what kind of guitar he plays at this concert ?

  • @mudspud01 he plays old martin acoustics

  • both of them ?? thnks

  • the one he is playing here is a martin d-45 '69-'71not sure what exact year.

  • sorry for the misunderstanding, I am a freshman this year. What I ment was my dorm is very close to the site of the shooting ad the memorial.

  • the shooting took place on the campus of Kent State University in Kent Ohio, about 50 yards from my dorm room.

  • were you in your dorm or on campus when it happend?

  • Time marches on...

    All glory is fleeting...

Nobody gives a shit about Nixon anymore.

  • its about the government too not just nixon, if it happend then it can def happen now, i grantee it will

  • First, take a course in Grammer and English composition!

  • "Time marches on ... Nobody gives a shit about Nixon anymore"

Maybe not, but today, instead of a conservative President like Nixon and National Guardsmen firing on civilians, you have civilians killing other civilians ... such as the guy who murdered several persons in a Tennessee church in summer 2008 because, he said, "The people in the church were liberals."

Nixon may be long gone, but the sentiments motivating the Guardsmen at Kent are with us still in 2010.

  • My Dad told me he went to Kent State on business last year, and tried to find the memorial. He asked the students there where it was, and none of them had any idea what he was talking about. For the love of all that is good, things have got to change in this country.

  • @Wrathbone13 agreed

  • @Wrathbone13

Tell him to keep looking-- it should be next to the memorials for Che and Mau.

  • @ObdurateJayhawker < TROLL!

  • @ObdurateJayhawker You are out of your fascist mind.

  • @ObdurateJayhawker

a big middle finger to you mr fascist....

The people protesting were performing a better duty to what America should be than your fascist ass will ever understand...

  • @Garret00074

Please, you're starting to hurt my feelings :(

  • @ObdurateJayhawker

You my friend, should reevaluation our position. This nation was founded on protest, civil disobedience and revolution. Burning the ROTC building could be considered extreme, however, they were merely expressing their resolve against a war. All perfectly legal, except the burning, but there were laws in place to deal with that. The guard opened fire without orders or authorization to do so. I answered my call to service, to defend their and your, right to protest.

  • @Wrathbone13 WTF are you telling me there is nothing there??? I was in college at wright state univ when it happened . FUCK

  • @Wrathbone13 . Theres a 2 1/2 acre memorial at Kent State it over looks the commons. So it's not in the heart of the campus. It's off to itself. Most students might not know about it before they go there but they will when they arrive. It's in the freshmen orientation. Theres quiet a few memorial structures there.

  • @Wrathbone13 They should definitely know, but don't forget that for those of us in NE Ohio, KSU is a local school, not the historic site it is to outsiders. The shootings are in the news here every May 4, and I've heard personal stories about that day, but if you're only 18 in 2010, 1970 feels like a million years ago. Even for someone like me who cares, I can't grasp it the way older friends can since I was only 3 in 1970.

  • @Wrathbone13 there is a memorial though, a stone in the ground. i feel sad though that the kids don't even know about the tragedy

  • @Wrathbone13 That is a sad thing. I grew up in the late 60's and 70's. How could they forget?

  • @Wrathbone13 I go to KSU and i highly doubt this... Its mandatory to take a class that heavily describes the massacre.

  • @Fudelan That is absolute bullshit. I graduated from KSU in 1981. My son graduated from Kent in 2006. My daughter is a junior there now. Freshmen orientation offers a 10 minute recap of the "tragedy". The word "massacre" is NOT used at Kent.

Why do imposters such as yourself pen such crap?

  • @SaulD123

umm we could talk on here.. or you can email me at sford6@kent.edu. Dumb fuck

  • @SaulD123

    Fucked your daughter.

  • @Wrathbone13 Yes there is something happening here. What it is aint exactly clear.

  • @Wrathbone13 They were probably too busy nig-boppin to eminem and p diddy.

  • @Wrathbone13 wow that is disturbing.

  • @Wrathbone13 Oh wow your dad really sacrificed so much. I hope they erected a monument to him. After all, "Business" was what the movement was all about. Be sure to make lots of money!! Unbelievably disgusting.

  • @MrGrevy HE means the monument for the students that died in the Kent University shootings...thats what the song's about...

  • @Wrathbone13 well it depends on when he went. Did he ask a tour group of possible incoming freshmen? Because trust me. If you ask ANYONE who goes to Kent, they can tell you.

  • @Wrathbone13 that's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever even heard. It's a college not a god damn Jr. high. Idiot

  • Definately one of the best songwriters in history!

  • i agree along with croce and dylan

  • this is good music. what happened to music today?

  • @Bmatzen22 amen

  • @Bmatzen22 they stopped handing out the goods on a silver platter so ya gotta find it yourself :P

  • @Bmatzen22 : Justin Bieber and auto-tune. And whassername from Montana.

  • adds by jewgle ,sad.

  • These vids are Amazing. Thanks Brothers Warner!

  • Neil Young looks like a caveman. A big, sexy caveman.

  • Brilliant! An absolute master of his craft!

  • absolutely, the album is incredible

  • what is the name of the album?

  • Live at Massey Hall 1971

  • is the cd worth buying?

  • Yes, definetly worth it.

  • yes, if you enjoy his music that is on the cd, it is as worth it as you want it to be.

  • yea this song rocks

  • advanman22 when was the last time you made another person aside from needing money happy?? everyone thinks oh feed the poor n all that but there are other ppl you can make happy not just the poor or w/e you "think" about.

  • Check out the Electric version of this by the Isley Brothers : Ohio/Machinegun live. They perform this song and go into jimi hendrix machine gun.

  • ah everytime I hear Neil Young's voice I get the chills. I love how his voice makes you feels. It really hits home. I agree with yu LordLetoMeetsOccam. Seriously, there are too many who knowingly turn a blind eye when people around them are being tortured and choose to do nothing about it since it doesn't effect them directly. God this world is fucked; has been from the start it's so sad.

  • Yikes.......

  • Indifference, being aloof and apathetic as a result of being desensitized to evil. This world is indeed f@#$%^&, but Christ has overcome the world by His death and resurrection. He made the only way out.

  • Yes, Christ saves us. We must act.

  • @AdavanMan22 Yes. I agree with you. Like all those who turned a blind eye when their brothers and sisters in Iraq were being tortured and murdered by Saddam Hussein’s regime. And then they call Bush a criminal for stopping it. You turned a blind eye to all that death thern and now you stand here and talk your peace and love SHIT? Sorry, dirty little transparent hypocrites. You know who you are.

  • Nice

  • o lie ur not

  • i hate uptight republicans like you if you dont like neil young dont watch his videos. Its better than rap anyways

    OBAMA BIDEN

  • Don't bring Neil Young into your ridiculous political arguments. Runnerrk, you make us Republicans look bad with your stupid ass comments.

  • i love neil young but sorry i ahve to say i ahte obama
