Saw this song performed years ago by Big Momma Thorton at the Village Gate in New York. The play was One Mo Time, about the old Lyric Opera House in New Orleans back in the '20's. Great song.
Can't say I remember Bessie's version but I'll go home and listen to it. I just stumlbed on this woman becuase she sings on Levon Helmäs latest record Electric Dirt. She's got a great voice and she's cute. I think I'm about to fall in love a little.
Love it! Nobody could ever sing it like Bessie, but this is a close second! I have often wondered how Bessie got away with this all those years ago, did morals board only apply to films?
So many blues songs back then were very double-entendre like this one. I think they got away with it because they never really said anything bad, only the metaphors... she could always just claim she really was just talking about food ;)
Superb rendition. Fabulous! Great backing. Love this singer- love the song!

Very fine version, quite true to the original atmosphere of Bessie Smith's rendition! Thank you for sharing.
