  • Do you still need the pully size?

  • @Searsnut11 Not really, as I have a larger pulley to fit to it now. Although I might want to turn to stock, so I;d still be interested. THanks man (:

  • I agree with roboman79... the outer edge of the pulley is like 5" but where the belt sits, it's like 3.5"... I have one of these kicking around my garage. looks the same except the deck drive pulley sits a little lower and is dished. It wouldn't matter if you weren't using it to mow, you could just cut that bottom portion off and have just the upper pulley.

Or do like I do and cut off the bottom deck drive pulley and mount it/weld it where the other pulley is supposed to be.

  • It will make it a little faster... This is exactly what we did to my friends green mtd. You just gotta get a bigger belt. He has the vari-drive-shit-box-pulley-in-the-middle-junk that I didn't want to screw with so this worked well.

  • Yeah, this will be my work tractor, but I'll probably use it off road too! Dunno if I'll ever make it mower, I have a wheel horse deck I could make work if I wanted to. Shame it didn't come with one, would have save me so much effort.

  • There like 3.5"

  • I just went out and measured mine. its hard to measure it because It needs to be measured exactly from one side to another and there is a bar in the way. I got 5 inches or 12.7 centimeters. That may not be exact though. I doubt they would make them exactly 5 inches . If need be I will use a clamp to get exact measurement. Hope it helps. Can't wait to see it finished!

  • 5 inches seems pretty big. Would you mind using a clamp for the exact size? It would save me getting a new belt! Thanks for your help man, really appreciate it.

  • Id say it looks about 3-4" - stock tractors front pulleys are really small- the trans and deck get the bigger ones- you dont need exactally that tho- the smaller ones are to make the motor rev higher- more power instant. the larger pulley would make the motor rev slightly lower- gives you more of a torque band.

thats why when i used a 6" motor pulley it lagged a bit- but wound out alot more then a smaller pulley and no slippage.

  • Well there's no adjustment between this and the other pulley. There's no idler on this, as it has to rotate 90 deg. Weird design, and means I need to know the exact size.

My mudding tractor will have a 6 up front and 5 in the rear. Twinned with an opposed twin it will have no end of torque!

  • My craftsman GT II is similar- the belt goes down- twists to the right side- twists again and goes back to the trans.

Yeah the mod murray had TOO much power - too much for me to handle almost stock.

the only way if you cant find a correct pulley to adjust it is a new slightly longer/shorter belt.

  • Thought about that.... but getting the right size could be a pain without having a load to try. Did discover something though, the pulley it links up to does acuatlly slid forwards and backwards (think its part of the clutch) it was jsut seized, and it's the first time I've had a good look under it

  • Thats common on MTDs- on most of mine the varible pulleys are siezed- thats why the 97 mastercut flew like a banshee- was rusted right in the middle.

Myabe with it moving now y can get a lil extra slack in the belt.

  • GOnna try getting a 4" on it, that way it'll have a little more speed than stock, but nothing drastic, this will be my work tractor, if I ever get it togther!

  • Well I am unsure about the pully sizes but I may be able to help ya with the coil.

    Hey do you have skype?

  • That's a bummer, thanks anyway. A coil would be good. I use MSN, if that's any use. PM me for my email!
