I just watched this your video for the first time today Feb 5, 2012, almost 5 years after you uploaded it. I've been playing violin for 2 months, I was going to offer advice until I noticed your upload date. Ha Ha ! I have a book like that for the cello.... I don't have a cello :(

But I just got a violin for Christmas. Sadly my parents got it from a pawn shop and it had a string missing, the E string was broken in the peg box, and I do not think I tuned the other 2 strings correctly.

Since we're poor, I had to go ghetto, and tie of the broken string so it can be used. Ironically, I think I tuned the E string correctly.

And screw the police I'm holding my bow how I please :P

Do you have any advice on buying your first violin though? When I Google this I am just overloaded with information and none of it seems to be aimed at someone who is an absolute beginner. It seems to me the best option would be to rent one, get a teacher and then have my teacher assist me in purchasing a violin?

From what I learned, you shouldn't put your chin on the chin rest. you should put the side of your jaw, from my right of your jaw. Hope this helped you xD

@dwaynedibbly I've been playing Violin for 6 years and my first year i had the same problem as you. you probably just need to add more rosin loosen the E string or play lighter. loosen your tention on the string your playing.

Hi, I have been practicing my scale but for some reason when I try and play the E note (the thinnest one) it sounds scratchy every time I've done it and I haven't been able to get a nice crisp sound like the others. Any idea why? I tried adding more rosin but it didn't, maybe a little but not much.

How come you didn't mention the rosin? I had to look every where to figure out how to make any kind of sounds out of the violin. But this was before you made your video. But you video is still very nice to learn from :)... I have yet to learn tho, but i can make annoying sounds out of it... I do have a volin tunner but those pegs move on me all the time. my volin does have pegs at the bottom to tune it even more but those pegs move :( a lot... I should use rosin on them to.

@pasmant62 to tune your violin I would recommend buying a tuner. They are usually sold in the stores where you buy your instrument. You may also want to buy rosin for your bow if you don't have it already.

Actually, for holding the bow, you might wanna try moving your middle finger under the bow stick so that it touches your thumb. Your teacher may not like it but its more comfortable.
