@stoolie10 Maybe you were splitting wood of a smaller diameter. Also, this tree had been down for two years so it was pretty firm. Maybe I'm not as strong as you. I don't know, but no, it wasn't for show; it was easier.
@colbycous01 For consistancy. I wanted really even-sized wedges of wood. It probably wood have been easier and faster to take chunks off the sides but I was splitting it to sell, so I was going for uniformity. I might try that, though. I've seen a lot of slabs cut from the sides as you describe. Burned a lot of them, too.
@TextFreeley right, right, its just alot harder to split him down the middle rather than take chunks off the sides with a big ol log like that. the pieces are gonna be as nice as you split them off. to each there own i guess. i will have just enough wood this year to make the end of march. hopein for a warm april,lol. stay warm friend.

why do you split em down the middle? why not just take chunks off the sides till its small enough to go down the middle?
