it should be in the *filters* tab.make sure you convert the smoke to a symbol (movie clip) and then click the blue + in the filters tab and select *blur*

I didn't understand the difference between a movieclip and a graphic symbol..can you explain me that? :) thank you and nice tutorial

It just tells flash what type of object it is basically, it can't figure that out on its own. If you designate something as a graphic, flash will treat it like a picture. If you make it a movie clip, obviously it will treat it like a movie clip. In flash I guess the filters like blur can only be applied to movie clips, and not graphics.

@studyingflash you can go within a graphic sumbol and animate it and make it loop, which is what should have been done with the fire here, it would definitely have been less work. however if you go inside a movie clip and animate it, it will not show the animation when you go back to the regular scene

@studyingflash graphic symbol is just a graphic can be used for background etc... you can use movieclip to actually create moving objects etc... you can do the same with a graphic but it is much harder since you have to do it frame by frame, movie clip will auto fill in the frames of where you move the object to from start to end if you do it correctly.

Just what it says, you can only apply it to those objects. In other words, make sure your object is not set as a graphic, but instead a Movie Clip, like I did in the tutorial.

Eh well the thing is I havn't touched Flash in months. I'm more of a 3D guy now. However my advice to you is if your trying to learn it yourself, do lots and lots of tutorials, starting with basic and work your way up. Practice makes perfect :)

I had a question. I'm using flash 8 to do a frame by frame action type of thing and after I add about 300 frames, the program says there was an error and to click ok to terminate and then the wole progrm shuts down. What can this be?

That's odd, I don't see why there should be a problem. You can try looking it up on google or something and see if anyone else has had similar problems.

I know very little on how to use 8, I'm just taking picture after picture I did using Paint and they are jpeg format and adding them to 8 but I'm not sure if maybe its making the file to big or my computer being low on space could be a possiblity cause I know there isn't much space left.

can i ask you...is flash animation really limited compared to photoshop animation? If I wanted to have better effects I would use photoshop, is that correct? and is flash easier or harder to use than photoshop?

I believe flash is more practical to use for animation than to photoshop. Photoshop does have better effects, but then again , its easier to animate in flash. They are both around the same level I think. Flash might be easier to learn faster though. If you want good effects and easy animation, you could use flash for the animating and a video editing program like after effects or something to give it some cool effects.

I find those kinda tutorials boring to follow, and I prefer my approach by telling you what to do, so you can read it and not have to go back and listen again because it was hard for you to hear. Then theres an example shown of what exactly I am talking about after that. So ya, i prefer my approach.

You can put shape tweens in any movie clip - try it for yourself. Any kind of symbol can have a motion tween.

actually any symbol can have motion tween. shape tweens i believe shouldnt be converted to a symbol if u want it to transform into somthing else. But you could still use shape tween to move the smoke, and it may look better, but probably harder to do

if ur trying to make it blur more, like its dispating, then u need to have say... 60% blur in w\e keyframe, and in the next keyframe u should have a greater number like 85% blur, and have motion tween on that, so it will change. I assume tahts what your doing
