Anyone that knows how electricity works will tell you that current, and not voltage is what makes electricity dangerous to people. the human body can conduct thousands of volts of electricity without any injury, providing that the current is sufficiently low Tasers. What people fail to realize because the media didn't point it out is that the death was probably not only the result of being tasered, but was also probably brought on by the drugs he was on. Why taser him if he was naked? The worst injury you could get from a naked guy is what? A black eye? Seems like a combo of pepper spray and an old-fashioned tackle would have been more than sufficient.

But did the witness not say he was completely flipping out and banging his head against the pavement or something? I'm just saying it's not explicitly stated that the taser was the reason for his death. In other words, the report is really saying nothing conclusive at all (except that this man died).

I'm not going to jump into this argument about whether tasers per se are potentially lethal or not, because I really don't know enough information about their effects. But did the witness not say he was completely flipping out and banging his head against the pavement or something? I'm just saying it's not explicitly stated that the taser was the reason for his death. In other words, the report is really saying nothing conclusive at all (except that this man died).

Yes Xantheus, see, that's what I'm saying, it seems a lot of information wasn't suppied explicitly in the report, but can lead a person to above conclusions based on inference. Again, I'm not claiming either side because I certainly don't know.. he could have given himself an aneurism and the taser cliched it, or, without the taser he had caused enough damage, or, it was solely the taser. I just don't see, on the basis of this story, how it "proves" that a taser is lethal.

Statistically, tasing him was the safest thing to do, not only to the bystanders but to the man himself. The man could have died anyway from whatever he had taken.

I'd like to see a statistical breakdown on the lethality of tasers vs other means of restraint or apprehension. I'm sure pepper spray's caused a few heart attacks, and its obvious people get killed by the billy club all the time.
