I guess, for 1984, the fact the characters weren't recoiling in disgust when the flamboyantly gay guy walked into the restaurant was considered progressive. Then again, Will & Grace concluded just 5 years ago.
Speaking of the commercial for "Brothers", I guess I don't need to watch the special now. The ad seemed to give away pretty much gave away every plot point.
I still have never seen The Man With Two Brains, but thought it looked hysterical when I was a kid. Too bad it was rated R.
@MeInTX The pilot episode of "Brothers" involved the youngest of the three brothers running away from the altar on his wedding day and revealing to everyone that's he's gay. Because of this, the networks passed on it and Showtime took it instead and it became the first original sitcom to air on cable.
@80sCommercialVault I read the Wikipedia entry after I posted that and realized that the flamboyant guy wasn't the only gay character on that show. Since I've never seen an episode (I don't think we got Showtime until after the show ended), I jumped to conclusions. It sounds like the gay brother was non-stereotypical, which really was progressive for 1984.
oh wow elton looked really hot back in the day huh? I only remember him looking like this very briefly...I was maybe 8 years old or 7 depending on when this was made. but omg...yes he was "breaking hearts" with a cute face like that
In case you're wondering who won, Phil Nee was the Funniest Person in America. His victory led to a fruitful acting career including rolls on the Cosby Show (Delivery Guy), Volcano (O.E.M. Staffer #5), and many TV shows that needed an Asian (Character names: Chan, Chen, Tong, Kim, Lee, Kojima, Woo, Chu, and Sweatshop.)
y'Know what I'm looking for? The Showtime (or HBO) short "Inventions" (animated) from this era. Can anyone help???!!! Msg me.

If I'm not mistaken, a young Ellen DeGeneres won that "Funniest Person in America" contest...she wrote about it in her book.

The voiceover guy for "The Brothers" promo sounds like the Men's Wearhouse pitchman.
And that slowed down version of "I'm So Excited" @ 3:31 sounds very, um "Chicka Chicka Bow Wow" LOL!
BTW-"Two of A Kind" is a crap movie, but "The Man With Two Brains" is funny and terribly underrated. Ahh the 80s...
