I'm doing the exact same thing to my "TV Yellow" squier standard tele. I tried chemical stripper and it did nothing. I actually have been using a heat-gun on high. I'm not doing it for looks, but the finish is thick and heavy, preventing the wood from resonating freely, breathing or aging. I plan to have it forever and I want it to sound like old wood when I'm an old man. I'll apply a couple coats of tung oil though. How are the "duncan designed" p90's? Would GFS soaps be an upgrade?
@dee304 It's kinda like a less expensive Les Paul Special. The agathis body (especially stripped bare like this) will resonate almost identically to mahogany, and the soap-bars are obviously not a fender thing. It does have a maple neck and fingerboard, bolt on, and a full 25.5" scale, all of which will make it a bit tighter and brighter than a P90 loaded LP. It's a nice balance of hot-fat-syrupy/clear-articulate-bright. This is the kind of guitar that will appeal to fender or gibson fans.
hows the fret acces on the high frets i play alot of octaves going down the neck and alot of things around 16 17 18 frets and theres none of these teles in my local guitar stores so i cant try it out
I used a powered detail sander and was very careful not to go to hard and constantly checked to try and get a consistent depth without sanding through the sealer coat.
If i was using nitro Id probably strip it right back to the wood and start from scratch with grain filling and fine sanding etc.
The neck is one of my favourites at any price point. Squier don't do Nitro finished necks though....
Hey buddy I have this exact guitar and I was curious, how exactly did u remove the paint without damaging the sealer? I would gladly appreciate it if I gotta response. Thanks :D and keep jamming!
nice guitar, just got mine sanded back to the sealer layer, ive read a couple of times not to sand through the sealer, does it effect the tone of the guitar, also do you recon i could paint nitro paint over the sealer, cheers.
I used a hand detail sander on the finish. Even with that it was a lot of work to sand it down and you have to be careful not to go through the sealing layer above the actual wood. I think the grain is pretty good, certainly good enough not to paint over it. I've never actually looked at how many pieces it is as the seams are not obvious.
I may try it again if I can find a cheap Humbucker version. I might just try and put a strat trem on it too.
Completely agree. seriously, this guitar is amazing. It´s Squier.... so what. It´s amazing. Really. The playability and simplicity, and light weight of a tele, incredible simple playing (notes bends like buttter) combined with the versatility of the electric setup of a les paul.... and also, you have those sweet P90´s (The best part) When you play P90´s you become addicted. Sweetest acoustic sound ever.... combined with the metallic tele sound and growl of those monster PU
really, this guitar is amazing. In 2 days it became my favourite, and i have 2 strats, a tele std, a jag, a LP sts and the les paul 56. In 2 days this one was my favourite. It´s the perfect combination. I recommend the black one
I got one when they first came out, lovely guitar, I paid £159' there about £230now

How well built is the neck? I was thinking about buying a rosewood with nirtro finishing.

Great playing man!
Would you answer a few questions please? How did you strip the poly finish?
I know most Squires come with agathys body. How does the wood look in person? I heard agathys is a cheaper type of mahogany. How is the wood grain?
Also, from how many pieces is the body made of?
