In the 1800s while the U.S. Government was enforcing segregation, some private colleges refused to comply and had fully black-white integration, even when the U.S.G. threatened them
I agree - Bob Jones had no business forcing his racist, color code down the throats of believers. It's not biblical - but you as a born-again understand that - right?
What you don't understand is that there is a difference in "forcing racism down the throats of Believers" and what actually happened. Here's a little education lesson for all of you; BJ had a simple rule that whites & blacks couldn't date while attending school. Is that racism toward Blacks? Why them only then? Also, it's a PRIVATE school. If you don't agree with it then don't pay to go there. How can a rule be forced upon an individual that CHOOSES to attend that school? Understand that right?
It isn't up to the parents that pay for that child to go there, what if the teenager wanted to date someone from another race, just because their parents have rules about that doesn't mean that that is the last rule. SOOO if that school never existed, or if that man never made that rule, people would be free to date whomever they want. you silly ninny
As far as school goes- if you don't like the rules then don't attend, it's very simple. you decide who to date so you can decide where to go to school. But if your parents are paying your way then you must at the very least comply with their wishes as well as the schools rules. At that point, you don't get to make the decision. If you want to date someone that your parents don't approve of then get a job and pay to attend the school of your choice. It's called growing up and it's called respect.
You still don't get it, It shouldn't even have to be that way whites not dating blacks, or any other race they choose, this man was obviously a racist and I don't know exactly the age were talkin here about students but if it's a highschool student, I highly doubt they are going to be able to afford to "pay" their own way and go to a private school, considering most jobs for teens will pay 7.00 an hour, yeah I can see a highschool student affording that.
No, you don't get it. Why is it so hard to understand that if you attend a school you must obey their rules? Are you that much of a dope? And if your parents are paying your way to school then you should reguard their wishes. A college edu. is privilege not a right. And as far as racism goes, how on earth is it "racist" to not allow 2 people of different colors to date? "Racism" by definition is the belief that one race is superior to another. Dis-allowing courtship between 2 races hardly fits.
@machinator1971 Of course it is racist. What planet are you from? In disallowing members of different races from dating you are, by action, showing racism. You are saying through archaic rules and actions that people of different colors don't "belong together" which IS racist. Even worse, it is done in a university which is suppose to be "Christian". If these morons who ran this so called school read their bibles they would realize that Moses married an Ethiopian. Are they smarter than Moses?
@mlukas - Okay, you need a Bible and a dictionary for understanding of which you obviously have none. Racist = someone that considers their own race is superior to another. Disallowing interracial dating doesn't meet that criteria, duh. Secondly, the Moses argument is so far over your head you'll probably never get it. BTW, try some basic geography and population studies from that time. You just might be surprised at what you find. Oh, and the Jews were told by God NOT to mix with other nations.
@machinator1971 In christ we are all equal. Racial segregation on buses etc was so not racist? it certainly wasn't Christian. Ruth wasn't a Hebrew, Jews are only one tribe of Israel
@machinator1971 this dude is a racist (card carrying member no doubt). and just a jerk in general. i mean who posts on a steve taylor video saying how dumb and wrong steve taylor is? a lonely racist! thats who! just check out his youtube page and i defy you to tell me you didnt peg him within 2 seconds! I GOT YOUR NUMBER MACHINATORGUY! your fighting a losing battle man... the world is sick of the kkk, nazis, skinheads and their sympathizers. and dont think even for one second that the bible
@machinator1971 makes any accommodation for racists (you). im a punk and i grew up with skins so i know the kind of bullshit that you spew... whats next? you gonna say how youre not racist? you just believe in america right? Just pride in your heritage thats all right? i mean really.... if you could do anything else but regurgitate lines from mississippi burning , i might blow my brains out!!!!!!! dude youre just a pawn, just a tool of a dead idea. a dead BAD idea at that. the idea that you are
@machinator1971 different because youre white. but YOU are different arent you? yeah you are cause youre scum. youre twisted. youre biased. youre wrong.
As a Born Again, Bible believing, Christian that lives in Greenville I have to say that this song is disgusting. This jerk has no idea what he's "singing" about. Oh, and I'm no big fan of BJU either. I've only visited there once in my life but know people from there. Some peopl just have nothing better to do than shove the race card down people's throat.
Actually he does know what he is talking about. Bob Jones University just recently stopped teaching that whites are superior / not cursed than / as blacks. His song came out about the same time as a court ruling against them for that [more specifically their admissions policy following that teaching].
Bob Jones has never taught that the white race is somehow superior over blacks. If you have proof of such false accusations I would love to read it. Otherwise your spewing a load of crap based on what you've heard through local media or from that loser - Steve Taylor.
It's hard to believe he ever got a recording contract, when you consider the empty pap that the Christians labels foist on their listeners these days.
I'm from BJU city.. He's writing bought my hometown. I never knew this song existed. And yes, you can tell the BJU'ers from anyone else . They only do in groups.
Great video! Thanks for posting, but description has a minor error: Meltdown was Steve's second album (not first). The first was the "I Want To Be A Clone" EP.
I went to one of his concerts in '84. He was so hyper! Lots of fun memories of listening to his music with friends, being silly. His songs are great, pointing out hypocrisy in the "church", non-conformist...reminds me of Keith Green in that way.
I have used Ebay for things in the past, I try to avoid it... like a plague ;) but I think this is worth making an exception. :D thanks for the suggestion, the thought sadly hadn't occurred to me :p
The live versions make for great video, but I'd still like to get studio versions to listen to. I've been unable to find any of his stuff for sale, for years.
Why is Steve picking on Greenville?

Now this is something I can agree with: Steve Taylor singing about the evils of Christian racism.

This was back when Christian music really had some incredible depth and punch... Man I miss Steve and wish he'd do another album.

Ironically, the producer of this record was a member of the KKK and other white supremacist groups (unknown to Taylor at the time).

One of the greatest song writers in Christian rock. I love his stuff.

Quality music that would be a joy to listen to under any circumstances. And it was informed by his religious beliefs.
Too many musical acts are able to get distribution of their music relying on their Christian content, not on the value of the music.
