I saw Sonny in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in October 08! He ended the concert with St. Thomas, and I was able to walk right up next to the stage and watch him. He's a monster! What an experience!
@JazzVideoGuy I made some brazilian friends in the U.S, I decided to go visit them, and ended up staying for 3 months. I arrived mid Sept. and left mid Dec. I was really affected by how the brazilians played bossa nova as opposed to how some Americans play it. The feel was just different. Bossa Nova and samba is everything there. There's a rather pathetic, new form of music called "Funk" that is really taking off. It's complete trash. Other than that, samba and bossa nova is everywhere. Loved it
Thanks for that video, I've always liked Sonny's music and try to play it sometimes. he's a great inspiration and influence and he deserves all the awards and recognition he gets. I saw him play a few years ago at the Barbican, London, and he was amazing. So much energy, so many ideas.
Thanks so much for all you do Bret, you bring a lot to the table. I sat in front of Sonny's horn at the Vanguard for 5 nights in a row back in 71? and was blown away forever. He is an inspiration as a musician and a human being.
@custardapple777 Third time for Sonny in DC this year, the first Award, a gig in October at the Kennedy Center, and then the Honors. I'm sure part of it will be available for streaming.
this was wonderful, Bret. so interesting and informative. i'm so glad you continue to be in Sonny's life.
first time i remember actually meeting Sonny was probably around 1966 at Well's Chicken & Waffles in Harlem during the early morning hours. Walter Bishop Jr. introduced us and my heart was pounding furiously. i guess i didn't hide my excitement at all as i think Walter was actually a little "annoyed" at my reaction!! LOL
Bret, you give many gifts to the world . . . you are important to the continuation of the music. Thanks so much for sharing your insights about Sonny and bringing us into your life and world. You are a rare jewel, along with Sonny and his music.
