ive been trying to learn this song for the last 2 weeks and i dont have a clue on the picking pattern for the bit just after the intro and the chorus, was waundering if you could just write down the strings that your picking in order?! so '1' is the bottom string and '6' would be the top :D
Thumb on the Low-E string (now a C), then index on D, thumb on G and index on B. The thumb always goes downward sand index upwards.
There are some variations to this pattern, pay attention to them (listen!) and play them in a way you feel comfortable. If you have any more questions, fire away!
the huge neck nylon makes it harder but the nylon strings would also make it a bit easier in my opinion, I compliment you on the singing along with it though, that's tough
It's a Hohner HC 06 I bought in Croatia during my inter-rail trip (I wasn't able to stay away from strings for a full month). It is a cheap guitar that turned out to be a very decent sounding one. I have no complaints.
I hear you! I need to "Wooten up" my slaps to give them more feel. As I always say, it's a work in progress. Nowadays, as I get comfortable with this right-hand technique, I slap the bass strings a lot more and it sounds more groovy now.
I was going to tell villa787 if he needed any extra help, he could ask. That goes for everyone who wishes to ask me something. If I am able to help, I'll try to do it. I'm no pro but I still like to help out ;-).
I first started to fingerpick the strings for about 2 days but it sounded different from the song. I investigated a bit further and found the sick thumb/index pattern which took me a bout 2 weeks to sound decent.
I use the thumb whenever it feels comfortable but John Mayer uses it all the time. You pointed out one of the reasons I don't always use it: the neck width in this nylon guitar. The other reason is that the finger positions John uses just feel awkward to me.
i play it very similar to you. im still working on getting it as good as you with the thumb slapping technique. not everyone has hands as big as john mayer. i play it on a regular width neck and there is just no way i can use my thumb, its just impossible my hands are too small. i thought your voice was good. i wish i could sing like that. just working on getting that slapping noise more. good job.
You're right, I f... up the metrics and the intonation in some spots. I need to work on my overall vocal skills but I think I didn't trash the song completely :-).
Concerning the tuning, you drop the low E all the way down to C.

Your pretty good since you played it on a classical guitar, you must have massive hands to be able to stretch that much.

how are you alternating your right thumb and index finger?

Basically the pattern is:
Thumb on the Low-E string (now a C), then index on D, thumb on G and index on B. The thumb always goes downward sand index upwards.
There are some variations to this pattern, pay attention to them (listen!) and play them in a way you feel comfortable. If you have any more questions, fire away!

Actually they are easier to press but more difficult to sound when slapping.

That's an extremely huge neck

its impressive because you cannot use your thumb because the neck is so wide, good job on the changes

These positions just feel more ergonomic :-D.
