Hey man, could you tell me how you purified your ammonium nitrate? Because i have a whole setup for making N2O (the best oxidizer ever created :D) and i am amazed at the purity of your NH4NO3. normally what i do is make HNO3 from impure NH4NO3 from cold packs then neutralize the Pure NHO3 with pure NH4OH then evaporate to get very very pure NH4NO3. I'm probably going to stick with this method for safety reasons but i'm curious as to what your method is. could you tell me? Thank you in advance!!!
@spotlightman1234 It was a bag of granulated dolomite powder impregnated with ammonium nitrate, so alkaline earth nitrates impurities were present. Some filtering and a few precrystalizations were needed. It's smart to eliminate impurities as much as possible, because during the decomposition alkaline earth nitrates increase their overall concentration, which eventually leads to an explosion. Basically, use more of the reagent and don't wait for it to dissapear from the flask, not even close.
no, nitrous oxide can not be made by boiling a water solution of ammonium nitrate. you have to gently melt pure salt and then heat it over it's decomposition temperature. the key word is "gently".
what if i filled a baloon with it? i know a shop that sells balloons full of it, but it comes from a canister, also would i just be able to have the AM h2o solution in a test tube and heat it, let the gas rise through the bung and tubeing, then bubble that though like a bottel of water like the tube would entre at the side of the bottel faceing down, then have a baloon on the neck of the bottel ,because it should work, i dont see why it wouldent continues on next comment- cant fit any more in!
verry nice demo, good thing its way heaver than air eh? and also its laughing gas, better not have too much though its a aninastic aswell in large ammounts,
its a very NOT danguerous anesthesic. youll need concentrations over 100% for total anaesthesia with nitrous oxide alone. in my clinic it is only used in combination with other anaesthesics, being flourinated gases or intravenous anaesthesics.
hm, how can you achieve concentration over 100%? isn't that illogical?
and I wasn't reffering to "total anesthesia", but "effect". it could be done with a bag full of it placed over mouth and nose. you need several deep inhalations to feel anything.
No, its totally logic - a MAC (minimun alveolar concentration) for a aenestesic gas is the proportion of gas vs oxigen needed to produce anaesthesia. If a MAC for a gas is over 100%, it means you CANT get anaesthesia with nitrous oxide alone. thats what i said with other gases. it lowers the MAC. of NO2. for example, sevoflourane is MAC very low 1%. to get high on NO2 youll ned about 30%, ill guess, wich is a dose compared to 10mg of morphine.
no sulfur is english and american pronunciation. Sulphur is the english spelling and sulfur is the american spelling because they cant handle words that arent spelt phonetically. e.g. aluminium becomes aluminum.
good thing you put some good music, im showing this to the class :P

one more question:
you seem to have some experience with ammonium nitrate... what is the "ideal" temperature to make it decompose?
sciencoking 2 years ago
aah and this is the reason why they blow N2O into their engines! now i understand :D

in Romania a truck of amonium nitrate exploded some years ago!

anyway... i dont see why it wouldent be because the gas made should be suffectnent if i boiul it hard enough/fast ? what do you think

it's impossible to inhale enough to feel the effect unless you stuff the gas inside your body with an apparatus. so, there's no danger.

I thought you were talking about the concentration of N2O in the sample of gas. That's another thing.

whoa, the sulphur flame was blue!
Keritzel9k 4 years ago
it's spelled sulfur, and sulfer ALWAYS burns blue
solidacid1337 3 years ago
sulfur, sulphur, whatever. sulphur is closer to its latin name.
and sulphur usually burns with a deep blue flame, not bright white and blue like here. :)

thats what i said... -_-
