Against a boy he can treat a bokken like a saber, but not against a full grown man with at least 15 years more experience in its use. That is how you get beat.
@guitarhamster102 tell that to William Adams: the FIRST white samurai who was the counselor of foreign affairs to his good friend Shogun Tokugawa Iyasu in the 17th century.
God, that must have been hard for that kid and his mom to watch. Hey kid, here's the slob who killed your father. I do like the end of the scene though. He whips Tom's ass and throws the kid the sword like a Mentos commercial.
@CoolLikePenguinNuts Lol, even though Tom got his ass whipped he showed a tremendus amount of balls..no one seems to see that. the average guy would have stayed down the 1st or mayb 2nd time he fell and said fuck this lol..so I think he showed them that he was a true warrior in this scene.
@CrazySicily True warrior, or really inept at the Japanese language :) *Tom Cruise speaking to himself* "Wow this guy is really angry about his hair dryer. He's shaking that stick something fierce. I thought I remember that British guy telling me when I was in a drunken stupor that the Japanese point sticks at eachother when they want to be friends. It's either that or bow. Damn it! I always screw up some mundane detail." *WHACK!*
@TheycallmeFumbles Ujio sees him as a disrespectful slob. The sole occupation of Japan for 1000 years was war. No other culture can make such a claim. Honor and respect with these men was on an entirely different level. They believed that defeat was the greatest shame. To keep your honor, after defeat you would commit seppuku (kill yourself) Tom Cruise didn't do that. In their eyes that is hugely disrespectful. He should accept his shame and kill himself. Hard for a lot of westerners to grasp.
Lol btw, probably the main reason this fight started is because they can't understand each other: After Ujio tells him to put down the sword, Algren's probably thinking "Wtf are you saying? Wtf do you want me to do? Fight you? Shittt." And then to Ujio's surprise, Algren reluctantly turns to Ujio xD
@topherno I dont think so. I think he knows exactly what hes saying but decides to show an act of defiance and fight him. As soon as Ujio says ''Katana wo orose!'', Algren looks straight at the wooden sword so this is why I think he knows.
@steevyp How could he know exactly what he's saying? Ujio walks up to him, looks at his sword briefly, then says something in japanese. Ujio's face expression doesn't reveal too much either, so I feel like Algren could've understood either "put it down" or "turn your sword towards me and prepare to fight". I especially think this because Algren, at first doesn't do anything until Ujio screams, so it seems to me as if Algren is unsure what Ujio exactly wants.
@steevyp But tbh, your option could work just as well too...Algren doesn't do anything at first because he doesn't want to obey Ujio, and when Ujio screams at him, Algren's decides "Alright you know what? Screw it, I'm not only gonna not put it down, I'm gonna fight you, you asshole." :D
I'm kinda amused how the potrayed Cruise's character as total oaf in this scene, as he was cavalry officer and trained to use sabre in 1-on-1 combat and on horseback.
@DragoonFlareRJ even U.S officers did train very heavily on sabre on both horseback and on foot, as almost all US cavalry was made up of dragoons. While general troops did get only their minimum ammount of melee training, officer got better training and even upheld it in high respect, training themselves because man's skill with sabre/foil/*insert the flavor-of-the-era-sword here* was highly respected and helped to reap fame in duels.
@DragoonFlareRJ I get what youre saying, it's just silly how much they downplayed his martial prowress in film until he learns "superior" techniques and art of Bushido.
Everyone could become a Samurai as long as their soul and the sword are one!!!

I believe that being a samurai is like to have the will to keep fighting, even if you're bleeding to death, but your objective is to win.

@Beethovenvirus Well it was 2 different fighting styles. The american cavalry didnt focus on sabre training as much as a samurai would.
