Having an axie of our own, vids like these make watching them (which is irresistible anyway) even more intriguing, even though we already knew they regenerated fast, of course :).
Though the test subject was not an albino :p (its a Leucistic axolotl, albinos lack pigment in the eyes)
Isn't it just amazing how old these creatures have grown, and ultimately even serve us in science after coming such a long way? ♥
Isn't that a bit cruel, cutting off tails and legs? I mean, sure, they bite it off in the wild, but...these ones aren't in the wild :( Poor little axies
5 star hotel!?, they keep em in confined spaces for observing, and it is cruel because the animals do it to eachother, which is natural, not humans doing it.
said to have been born when the Aztec god, Xolotl, fearing his immanent sacrifice, threw himself into the water and was transformed into the creature we see today. Perhaps there is some truth to this story because of the amazing, even god-like, powers that distinguish it from its fellow amphibians and other vertebrates
Alright... So it loses it's heart and then grows one back. What does it do in the meantime? How does it live while it's waiting for the heart to grow back?
It can regenerate back heart tissue, so if a portion is removed, it can grow back provided the animal survives the surgery. You can't take the entire heart out and expect the animal to live, but differnt portions can be removed at different times
at osamainlederhose: thats completely right! if they keep them and don't know THAT, then wtf? and to tooelow, well, you could, in a rare situation, keep axolotls alive, not nessesairely healthy, in a wet towl. but they couldn't eat.
Nah, see the people doing the film, the Max Planc Society is an organization which reports on interesting science and technology. The narrater does not work at that lab, which is probably why he did not know the axolotl was leucistic. I am sure the women knows but she probably did not review his script, also, since the public doesn't know the term leucistic, maybe he said albino

I cant believe that they are illegal in CA. I cant believe the people at the pet store were dumb enough to have on and sell it.
