  • Songs my mother taught me,

    In the days long vanished;

    Seldom from her eyelids

    Were the teardrops banished.

    Now I teach my children,

    Each melodious measure.

    Oft the tears are flowing,

Oft they flow from my memory's treasure

  • but this one is in german.:)

  • she always sings so beautifully. a shame that it's in english though, would love to hear it in Czech

  • I am sure that even though Dvorak was Czech that this song was origionally in German because the name of the song is Als die alte Mutter mich noch lehrte singen (as the old mother taught me to sing). I am not entirely sure though so don't take my word on it.

  • It is in German.

  • There are 3 set lyrics, English, German, and Czech. The Czech version is very rarely performed, it is recently recorded by Anna Netrebko (who voice I honestly say am not very fond of)

  • there is a very nice version in Czech sung by Bernard Fink on YouTube.....much nicer nonsmarmy version which you might enjoy.

  • oops......Bernarda Fink

  • You err. The lyrics was published by Adolf Heyduk in Czech first under the title Když mne stará matka.

  • @strauss12345 Adolf Heyduk translated his own Czech poems into German. A. Dvorak set them for the tenor at the Viennese Court Opera, Gustav Walther in German, and for publication in his own country, with slight alterations only, in Czech.

  • this is by far my fav version of this particular lied

    beautiful

  • Amazing. I get shivers down my spine.

Flawless in every way and so touching!

  • splendida voce morbida e cremosa la giovane te kanawa.... molto poetico richard amner....

  • I'd venture to say this rendition has an "English-ness" to it, while Schwarzkopf's has a much more European flavour which might make it seem more "authentic". I enjoyed both!

  • My favorite composer, and favorite singer ever, magic.

  • I am blown away

  • I haven't seen her singing for a while, but I realized again through your videos that she has the most natural beauty in voice and looks.

    Her eyes fascinate music more.

    Thank you for your sharing.

  • Oh...and why do some people have to be blessed with everything? She's as beautiful as her voice.

  • I just love this song...especially with Kiri singing it. She conveys so much emotion in the music.

  • These recital clips are so fantastic; Kiri in her wonderful, youthful prime and in repertoire not much captured on film - please keep posting!

  • Soulful melody and lyrics as only Kiri can convey. Thank you.

  • listen to Sutherland too!
