  • I saw him chatting at St Pancras. A top fella. A real English gent, and a very bright man. A great package. Before the PC idiots took control. Peel was everything that I am proud to calk English - open-minded, tolerant, very decent.

  • Connolly's words sum it all up, as usual. Thanks for the Cure, thanks for the disease. A grateful nation salutes you.

  • What does Connolly mean about the "the disease"? Is this a reference to the bunnymen song???

  • @banjojobby I wish I could say it was a reference to Boogie Disease by Dr Ross. Check it out...You might catch it.

  • Blackburn said in 2007 that he regretted not burying the hatchet with Peel... and in 2010 said that when the two met at functions etc, they got on well. I thought it was quite big on Blackburn to go on This is your life actually, considering the supposed rivalry between them, but I think it was more musical if anything.

  • loook at branson with his pic of Mandela on his mantepeice. what a vunt!

  • Yes...thanks for the disease! Thank you John Peel for the "Rockin' pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie flu"....RIP John Peel

  • Ach, I miss Fluff Freeman. And what a great tribute to John Peel.

  • Fluff! What a guy. Real class!! One the first, one of the best!

  • Superb post! Many thanks for sharing!

  • Kershaw's life went downhill after this

  • Funny how they skimmed over the pirate radio bit don't you think ? That's the BBC, I suppose.

  • lmao its smashy and nicey rolled into one person

  • Bransons jumper ha ha ha what a tosser

  • John Peel saved my youth by introducing me to so much good music.....listening to his show was like listening to a good friend

The music scene will never be the same without John Peel ....RIP

  • love old john, very much missed

  • ha ha, god bless branson ! he never misses an oppotunity to plug Virgin! lol and thanks for uploading this 3 parter, its just a small shame of the couple of drop out in the tape, oh well , good job though,

  • Yeah, bit of a blatant Virgin plug. :-)

But to be fair Branson is right, the whole Virgin empire's starting point was the success of Mike Oldfield, and Oldfield's success was thanks to the support of John Peel.

And that's just one example. The scale of Peel's effect on the world is staggering when you start to think about it... all those legendary bands and singers...

Peel single-handedly did far more for new talent than any number of government schemes or commercial crap like Pop Idol.

  • I agree with you there, I remember litening to the perfemed garden and the john peel show back in the day, It was such a shock when he died , I feel for sheila and his kids, but what a wonderfull legacy, btw ,I read his part written autobiography and was fasinated by johns time in the states in the 60`s.

  • Still wearing the same shirt as he did on the Whistle Test

  • the pastels. teenage fanclub. need i say more?

  • Richard Branson's self-parody fireplace and pullover routine was brilliantly conceived.

  • John didn't like Tony Blackburn, why didn't John rip his wig off in front of the nation? Too much of a gentlemen...much missed, such a great broadcaster.

  • Met John Peel once, what a lovely man

  • john Peels greatest break was with Big L, on the mv Galaxy..his show was called 'John Peels Perfumed Garden' a late night prog in which he he was possibly the first dj to start playing psychedelia, progressive and 'fringe' pop. His later Radio One years never mstched his days on offshore radio any more than the Beeb matched pirate radio

  • I loved John Peel and cried my eye's out the day he died ... I will always remember laying in bed from 10 to 12 every week day listening to john, he made my youth the wonderfull time that it was ...... thanks john ... RIP

  • Ah the marked contrast between serious and worthy Peel and annoying and naff Stewpot and Blackburn

  • Peely was brilliant, his festive 50 i used to tape evey year but sadly lost em a few years back moving abroad. r.i.p John.

  • Search for Festive 50 Torrent and you can download every single one from 1976 to 2004. Some wonderful stuff in there.

  • 1995 was they year Smokie/Chubby Brown had the hit at the start of part 1

  • 1995 - it's in roman numerals in the final frame

  • What year was this filmed?
