I have two parakeets, and one is mental and the other is smart. :P

My mental one has flown into a window, a microwave oven window(And there was a burrito inside), a kitchen sink, a television, an old sleeping basset hound, a cat(don't ask how she pulled that one off), another parakeet, and a lamp and is still alive. Don't ask me how.

I had a Cockatiel a few years back. Sammy. He made a lot of noise..but the only think he did that I could 'understand was "Kitty kitty kitty kitty kitty" And kissy noises...The cat hated him.

Word of advice, Cockatiels require patient owners. If you're impatient you can make the cockatiel resent you for quite a while. New borns are probably the easiest to get to know you as a good person.

Also, it is possible to potty train them but for the most part they just go where they must. Trying to train my own not to crap on the keyboard everytime she's at my desk. >.>

Yeah, I heard they weren't as messy as most birds lol. Sadly all the Cockateils at ym shelter were adopted so I can't get one :( But I am glad they found homes

How can that be taught to a cockatoo? Just whistling doesn't really tell anything to the bird..

I guess every time when the trainer might whist before right before he feed that cockatoo.....

Keep doing that for a period of time, that cockatoo will think whenever the owner whist, will be the time for meal.....so it will come toward the trainer while he whistling.

In order word, the trainer made something that is meaningless to something meaningful to that cockatoo...

Precisely, it's like clicker training for dogs, when they perform the desired action you give them a treat a command & a click, with time replace food with just a command & a click and finally the clicker, leaving just the command.

Why? It's normal to cats to catch birds and give them to their owners, by that the cat means that it likes you. You can't change that, cats are predators and they cannot resist killing other animals.. If you punished it after that, the cat thinks youre crazy; it thought giving you a gift was a good thing. Cats just can't understand humans.
