@crapbag725: WTF? Khachaturyan is Armenian. Georgean surnames end with -shvili, -dze etc., Armenian surnmes end with -yan! Khachaturyan, Babajanyan, Terteryan! Also, there is nothing Georgian in this music!
Wow! If only Joshua Bell could play like this! The violinist plays this very challenging work amazingly well. As for the pianist, he nearly turns this into a piano concerto. I doubt that Heifetz would have hired him as he is just too good. After hearing Oistrakh play, I didn't think I'd be satisfied with anyone else, but this young violinist is unique. I still think Oistrakh's is the masterpiece, but this is not far from it. Strong, consistent playinig. The video doesn't do justice. Bravo!
yes, the notes are there and you had most of them right, but there are no differences between them, the slow part and fast part. They all just sound the same to me. It's a straight path from the beginning to the end, there is no change in the musical aspect.
I think I'll need to buy the sheet music or a CD recording before I post a video, as it's nowhere to be found on YouTube (as you already noticed). I'll let you know when I've got it!
that would be a good idea. It's a reaaally awesome piece. I played it for auditions and it's amazing. Great for when you're angry or have a lot of energy. There is however, sections of the first movement on youtube. I found them a few days ago, it's a woman playing with a small orchestra, but it's not under Khachaturian Violin Concerto. I still think you should get the music and get Oistrahk's recording!!!!
I would take it a little slower (that's just my taste) It did sound very good though and the ensemble was very good, even though I agree that that the piano plays too loud most of the time.
I don't really think that his violin responds very well for this piece. His articulation is pretty good, but when he crosses strings, he loses much of his sound and some notes aren't projected anymore.
This boy's probably no older than 18? I actually think his violin sounds pretty good, but he could use some refinement, particularly with his right hand- I agree with your comment on articulation. His musicality still has a ways to mature, but overall he's on the right track.
Brillinat. You play the khachaturian concerto with great ease. I wish I could play the flute transcription for the piece just as good. Can you please play carmen fantasy and put the video up? that would be intense.
now that u had mentionned Oistrakh mention Heifetz and it will be complete damn...I found this recording very well well done (lol my second time commenting I just enjoyed it bravo Joshua!)
good tone, but much could be done with improving the style of playing. Sounds too technical. Also should be done memorized, and you should move around more to feel more free and not be so stiff.
Khachaturian's Russian imagination--- dark, romantic, has always had me in awe. I have 4 orchestra verions of this concerto, but this simple unit of piano & violin is as good as any of those. I wish they had identified the pianist and told when and where this video was made.
It is kind of hard to read on a small screen, but the video does credit the pianist, Arnold Draper. It also lists Silverton, B.C. Aug. 2006 as the recording place and date. Silverton is impossible to find on a map, but it hosts a wonderful music/strings camp every summer.
I'll try to post a recording of me playing the 1st movement at age 18 if he needs a self-esteem boost. Technically great, just little things that are easy to miss. Love the ricochet at the end. Awesome pianist too. Expressiveness will come with time.
Are you serious? Oistrakh's is the best interpretation with wonderful tone, articulation... This amateur version is filled with intonation, wrong style, etc
But really, overall it was a pretty good performance. There were some technical errors, and I think he could've relaxed and opened up more, but I know how hard that is. Having performed it myself, I understand how difficult it is to play this concerto (or any concerto, for that matter). It takes guts and endurance. Joshua did very well.
I think it may be the recording camera that is responsible for the intonation mistakes. It is not as if he was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. I think I will agree with you on the style; he can be a bit freer and more folk-like.
I can see how someone might think that. Actually Joshua is my 14 year old son who is hyper-critical of his performance. I just wanted some friends and relatives to see this, so YouTube is the best way.
0mg, he's 14 years 0ld!? and playing Khachaturian already?? w0oou!! he l0oks 0lder.... I'm 17 and I'm still practicing this c0ncert, in my 0pini0n he did well... but he might c0uld d0 it better, he played very technically, I think he 0nly needed m0re interpretati0n
It's good that's he's critical, the more he'll critisise himself the better he will play later. (however not too much - being too much depressed about your playing makes you play worse than you do a the moment). But seriously I would say that despite minor intonation mistakes it was very good espessially for that age!
That was one Hell of a performance; you are a splendid musician. I can't get over my love of how Khachaturian is so psychotic and emotional at the same time. It's great. Bravissimo.
Bravo!

How marvelous. This makes me feel ashamed of being only a year younger than him and no where near his level.
I feel myself bother becoming green with envy and starry-eyed in admiration. Tell your son that he's amazing some time soon for me.

one thing that I didn' t like about your playing:

For this reason, 4/5.
