  • I'm a huge Nels Cline fan and love his solo but I still have to applaud Jay Bennett's original solo on the studio take

  • @Noseheros Check the Summerteeth liner notes: Jeff Tweedy played all of the guitar parts on this song in the studio. Jay Bennett played the banjo, piano, organ, Moog, and tambourine on Via Chicago.

  • Does anyone know of a video of Via Chicago with Jay Bennett?

  • no audio: no party. what's a pitty!!

  • I was looking for the lapsteel, then I was like "lol nels cline, you genius"

  • That whammy bar on the guitar solo just breaks my heart into a million pieces every time.

  • Nels cline is a genius

  • I love how Jeff can just keep the song going while the rest of the band bashes around randomly, without missing a beat or singing a note out of key.

  • solo le sobran los putos subtitulos en catalán...

  • @josemz9 no todo el mundo sabe inglés, y va bien para aquellos que no lo entienden.

  • @josemz9 that was rude. if you don't like it go somewhere else. translate that jerk.

  • I love the crazy parts in the live performances of the song. When I first heard it on Kicking Television I got the impression that the entire stage was being sucked into a black hole. It's like the universe is getting ripped at the seams. Totally trippy.

  • @ryantp Seconded.

  • @ryantp so,..

  • think its the ehx pog

  • Cut short @ end. Such a shame.

  • I dreamed about killing you again last night and it felt alright to me

  • How the FUCK did Mr Cline make his guitar into a Lapsteel slide??!

  • @ZRN959 im thinking hes using a volume pedal. i could be wrong though(-:

  • @ZRN959 his footwork :)

  • I love Nels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! + Jeff

  • music like this is why the terrorists will never win

  • NELSSS! i love you man

  • what i wonder is how Jeff and John manage to stay in perfect harmony during the chaos sections

  • me cago en de cai

  • To me this song represents the pride one should feel when they overcome troubles in their life. With lyrics like "crumbling ladder tears don't fall they shine down your shoulder" meaning that when dreams or ambitions are crushed they leave the proud effort of trying behind masked by negatives of the the actual failure.

The lyrics describe a murderer escaping the public, media and police watch, and successfully making it to the peaceful home of chicago. And the way Jeff Tweedy ignored the cac

  • WILCO !!! unbelievable live !

  • WILCO !!!

  • this is awesome.. anyone know where u can buy or dl this whole concert???

  • ahh, this is one of my favorites by them. can't even believe there's so much debate.

  • simple but really good song..i like the dissonant elec. guitar and keyboards too

  • God this is perfect!

  • @calvinmontgomery You clearly don't understand Wilco. At all.

  • um, sorry but i've been listening to Wilco for at least 8 years, so clearly this is just a bad song. it makes no sense to have drums and keys that don't even add to the song.

  • @calvinmontgomery I don't care if you were at the first Uncle Tupelo concert, the length of time that you have listened to a band for does not change the fact that 'Via Chicago' is classic Wilco.

It is powerful, and dissonant and beautiful and tragic and there is a reason it's a live favourite.

    You sir, are a dick.

  • Music, especially stuff like Wilco's, is so subjective.

You would need three promotions to be a dick.

  • @calvinmontgomery But there is a difference between not liking a song and not understanding a song. If you just didn't like it, then whatever - but the fact that you state that the cacophony of noise that exists in this piece of music doesn't suit the song, and to then go on to state that because you've listened to the band for eight years that it is CLEARLY just a bad song - indicates that you don't have a clue, and are clearly suffering from levels of dicktitude unfathomable to most humans.

  • That's a good point, but what I said was the rest of the show I went to this month was chill and for them to play an acoustic song with "chaos" in the middle of it, totally ruined my vibe. I stand by my initial statement that the middle chaotic parts don't completely lend themselves to the rest of the song, regardless of the symbolism (which isn't lost on me, btw).

  • i have to go with the other guys calum. to watch jeff and john play so coolly whilst the rest of the band go crazy and make insane noise is one of the many reasons why no other band comes even close to wilco right now. via chicago live is stunning!

  • @isnackv20 LOL. Great comment. I have to agree and then admit that I neither like nor understand this part of the song. I like Wilco though.

  • Amen to all your comments, isnackv20. In contrast to some posters in this thread, the "cacophony" does not 'ruin' the vibe of this song in any way. Just the opposite, the quiet, reflective parts of 'Via Chicago' are actually more dramatic when framed by the contrasting loud, "free" sections. I'll admit that the approach is not for everyone's taste, but there's no denying the artistry and vision in assembling these contrasting colors.

  • @calvinmontgomery

    A. This is an awesome song and clearly one of their finest.

    B. Using discordant sounds is a musical feature that they use on many other songs ie Sunken Treasure, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Ashes of American Flags and others. It what makes them an experimental rock band, among other denominations.

  • have already seen a lot of concerts but no one like wilco. i didn't know the band really and i was surprised.

  • i saw they yesterday in milan. in my life i've watched a lot of concerts and listened a lot of bands and singers, but someone like wilco i think it's impossible.

    they are absolutly the best

  • aren't they amazing?! I had never heard a single song from them and was taken to a concert from them a couple of months ago. it was pretty overwhelming how good their music is, even at first listen. =)

  • What a band...genius

  • Gotta echo Bob Jones...this song live is so sick and unreal.

  • this song gave me chills...like 3 different times.

  • Probably the best Wilco song ever, among a great library of songs. And, if you argue with me, I will punch you in the head, but in a nice peacenik, hippy way, so as to not hurt you.

  • @jphuron i like you

  • ditto the bobjones comment below. 7 !!!

  • Menuda paletada traducir la letra

  • Having seem Wilco live, I can report that videos of this never quite do it justice. When they do that "chaos" bashing around part, in the room it sounds like a jet taking off. Nels Cline's Amp vibrates the whole building when he does that with it.

This is a great clip though.

  • @bobjones864 that must be awesome right?

  • @bobjones864 TOTALLY!! AGREEEEED!! I GOT SCARED LOL

  • @bobjones864 100% agree with this. I was totally unprepared for the "jumbo jet" portion when I first saw them for the first time in 2007 and it just blew me away. There's no way to convey how LOUD and overwhelming an experience it is in a video

  • tweedy is hands down the smoothest strummer out there...
